A fantastic mystery and suspense story from two amazing authors! Ray is trying to adjust to his new normal as a PI when an old, unresolved case reappears. Andy witnesses a horrible crime and contacts Ray to help him. What they didn’t expect was the attraction and the depth of their feelings. I think what I liked most about this book aside from the mystery is that Andy and Ray’s relationship progressed naturally and it felt real. I also enjoyed learning about Ray’s past and meeting his friends. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention how creepy and crazy the killer is. Davidson King and J.M. Dabney sure know how to draw out the suspense but keep the reader engrossed. I’m really curious about Bradford and about Richie. I hope they collaborate again to continue more books in this world.
This was a wonderful treat. It was suspenseful, intense and a page turner. I liked both MCs, their individual characteristics complementing each others. There is insecurity and vulnerability in both, and their relationship is not certain but in a midst of danger they find peace in each others’ arms.
Ray Clancy is an ex-cop who was ousted from police force by another dirty cop. He is trying to put his life back together. He was good at what he did, and he misses the thrill of the chase, that adrenaline that came with putting a criminal away. Now he is eking his living as a local PI and detests every second of it. Prior to him involuntary leaving police he was investigating a series of murders that had young gay men slaughtered in a horrible fashion, and now after nearly half a year the killer is back again worse than before. A young man stumbles in his path seeking help and he does not know what will kill him first – the case or a possible broken heart.
Andy Shay is a server in a posh restaurant, he is making a small life for himself with his roommate Francis. There is not much but it’s theirs. On one fateful night he finds himself smack dab in the middle of a murder case that puts his life in danger but brings him to a man who might be his future. His life was never easy and it’s hard for him to believe that someone so self confident and handsome as Ray could be interested in him – an awkward and lanky man.
Ray and Andy try to untangle the threads of this case that will point to direction they never expect, Ray uses all of his cunning intelligence and a vast array of connections both legal and not so much to find out who is the crazy man that is stalking him. The truth is never easy or what they presume, it’s shocking and frightening. This case just shows how much we don’t know the people we deal with, how much is hidden behind a friendly smile and benign facial expression. So many innocents die because of a sick obsession, and when Andy’s life hangs in the balance Ray unleashes hell on those responsible.
I enjoyed it a lot. It was the imperfect characters that were easy to relate to and a wonderful murder mystery that made the book awesome. Plus the secondary characters made an impression, provided humor and sarcasm, sassy banter and showed that loyalty can withstand years of separation and even change of sides. A wonderful read by two wonderful talented authors! A job well done! I highly recommend it.
I loooove Davidson King & J.M. Dabney books, so I have no doubt that they would write one hell of a badass book together! And of course, they did NOT disappoint, this was such an AMAZING book! So worth the wait!
