The House that Adelia Built by Mya O’Malley was a book I had a hard time putting down which made concentrating at work more difficult than normal.
There were so many twists and unexpected events that I think my mouth was hanging open in surprise the last third of the book. I love the way Ms. O’Malley ended this book. I could not have asked for a better ending.
Clooney and Hope were great with one another. I just can’t get over the ending! I’m not a huge fan of the paranormal/ghost stories but I gave thoroughly enjoyed reading Ms. O’Malley’s books and I always actively look for her books.
Wow! Where to start?! I just love Mya O’Malley’s books! This is the fifth book by her that I’ve read and they all have been so wonderful! In “The House That Adelia Built” we meet Adelia in 1876 and Hope in 2017, two women who love the same lighthouse and live to care for it. Hope is a shy, soft spoken woman who always had trouble making friends besides her roommate, Tracy. Adelia is a lonely woman with only her gin swilling husband to talk to, who is desperate for a real friend. Mya O’Malley beautifully blends the stories of the two women with alternating chapters, giving us a glimpse forward and back to weave the story together. I absolutely devoured this book in a few short hours as it is packed with a great story and even some romance. Mya O’Malley is quickly becoming a favorite author of mine and I’m always excited when a new book comes out and this book did not disappoint! This story has some ties to “Lillie”, another Mya O’Malley gem and I love that she does those little story touches for the people who have read a lot of her other books! If you like romance and a bit of the paranormal then Mya O’Malley’s books will be right up your alley! I give “The House That Adelia Built” five stars!!

The House that Adelia Built is my absolute favourite by Mya O’Malley. The storyline was so captivating that I ended up reading it in one sitting as I couldn’t bring myself to stop reading. This story is intriguing, dark, haunting, suspenseful and heart-wrenching. From the very first chapter I was hooked, I found myself sitting on the edge of my seat waiting to get answers to all of my questions. I was kept on my toes with each new chapter as I got closer and closer to the end.
I loved how it was written in both past and present with two different POV’s. Mya wrote with so much detail that it was always clear and at no point was it confusing to follow along. All of the detail from the characters, their emotions and their surroundings was all so clearly detailed that it made it so easy to picture everything playing out in my mind, which made it highly entertaining.
I would most definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for their next suspenseful read! It’s a book you won’t want to miss!
Mya O’Malley is not a new author to me, but I must confess this has to be my absolute favorite novel she has published so far, and I have read all but two of her others. That is really saying a lot coming from me as I am not normally a fan of historical romances of any sort. The dates and things jumping back and forth from present day to the past often is just not easy for me to follow and therefore makes it hard to enjoy the book. O’Malley really does this transitioning effortlessly and smoothly. I had no troubles following what was going on and I was quite engrossed in the entire story. So much so that I found myself staying up well past my bedtime to finish this novel. I had to know how the story was going to work out.
Adelia MacGregor lived with her husband, Augustus beside a lighthouse. Augustus is not the man that Adelia married. He has become reclusive and distant, even a bit jealous. Ultimately Adelia was now living in fear of her husband.
Fast forward to 2017 and we meet Hope and her bestie Tracy. They now inhabit this house that is beside the elusive lighthouse. Hope is pulled towards this lighthouse. So much so that she often has a very difficult time leaving it for very long. There is just something about this lighthouse that is nagging at her. She decides to look into its past and in the process she meets Cloony. Cloony is a local bartender and also pulls at the attention of Hope. What Hope ultimately discovers will be far from anything she could have ever imagined.
I had no idea what to expect with this novel, and the ending threw me for a loop, but made sense in the end. Overall the story flowed beautifully and was a gripping mystery I found myself deeply engrossed in from the very beginning to the end. I look forward to seeing what else is to come from O’Malley in the future, and to going and reading the other two that I have not read yet from her available now.
The House that Adelia Built, by Mya O’Malley, was a reading pleasure. This story has elements of the past/present intertwined together. The layout of this story was solidly written with the right mix of descriptive detail. Add in the bit of ghostly features, the author has created an in depth story that will capture your imagination and thoughts as you proceed in both the present and what has already passed. The lighthouse that is the center of this story is definitely the main drawing point of this story. What is truly going on? Why are these events occurring? What is laying ahead for each of these characters? The pace and style of writing, by Mya O’Malley, was on point and provided a thorough and well written story.

This is not the first book that I have read from Ms. O’Malley but I have to say it is one of the better ones. The story takes place on an island mainly in a lighthouse. The book flips between the 1800’s, with Adelia and Augustus to present day with Hope and Clooney.
Adelia tells her story of love and betrayal from her husband Augustus. They moved to the island as newlyweds excited to start their new lives together. The isolation of the lighthouse on the island brought Augustus to the brink of insanity. What should have been a beautiful time for Adelia turned into a stressful life full of lies.
Hope is the young woman who lives in the lighthouse now and has a serious case of agoraphobia. She has nightmares connected to the lighthouse. With the help of her friends Tracy and Clooney, she tries to unravel the mystery plaguing her.
Like in all of her books, the author throws in a cool twist to the story. It took me a lot longer than usual to figure it out. I tip my hat to her, she did a good job writing this book.
The House that Adelia Built by Mya O’Malley is a great eerie read. The story goes back to the late 1800’s and to the current day. Adelia is brought to the lighthouse by her husband Augustus. She is isolated and left to the whims of her husband. He is an alcoholic and falling into problems due to the isolation of the beautiful location. Current day brings us Hope who is the current keeper of the lighthouse. She prefers the isolation and feels a pull whenever she leaves the lighthouse.
I read this while it was storming outside and it only leaned to the setting and atmosphere of the book. This is a well-written story with mystery, heartbreak, and very human emotions. I was drawn into the story and did not want to put it down. I wanted to know the fate of Adelia and of Hope. Both women were interesting. I really enjoy the time period this was set in and enjoyed the mystery of the story.
What an unprecedented delight. The House that Adelia Built it not only a fast-paced read, it’s also an eerie one, one that is simply delightful and creepy. Part of what makes this novel so good is the atmosphere it holds is so eerie. Taking place in a lighthouse above the bluffs creates an isolate atmosphere that is reminiscent of Stephen King. It has this tone that makes it eerie without adding much to it. O’Malley lets the story speak for itself, she lets the description build upon itself and create the mystique that lures the reader into the mystery of it all It’s captivating how the story functions in that way, to focus on the use of language to captivate the reader. O’Malley knows how to show and not tell, and she does it so well.
On top of that, there is the 200-year gap that goes into the storytelling. The story shifts from the 1800s to 2017 to focus on two separate women in who both live in the lighthouse. Hope from the year 2017 is having visions of something terrible happening at the lighthouse, except she’s having trouble with it, reconciling these visions with her life. Hope has never tried to make sense of her visions or the pull the lighthouse has on her, but once she meets Clooney, everything becomes stronger for her, making it harder for her to live day by day. It’s interesting how the story goes, how it creates Hope and makes her persona and narrative so different from Adelia. These are two very distinct voices that drive the story, and what’s more, the flashbacks, the way they build the history also serve to build the mystery.
The novel goes back and forth effortlessly between the two narratives, keeping the reader from losing interest and losing their place. The story is clearly written and uses misdirection so well. It’s unpredictable how these two characters relate to one another, leaving to a mind-blowing resolution. That’s what makes it so good. Yes, the narratives maintain their own tone and distinctions, but the fact that the tension and pace enthralled the reader, keeping the reader on their toes it what makes the piece as a whole so accomplished. As a ghost story, a paranormal story, it keeps the reader at the edge, it maintains the mystique. That’s what’s so powerful about this novel and why it’s so good.
The story flows, it has an enthralling setting and captivating characters and this air about it that makes the reader just want to curl up and read. The pace keeps it moving, keeps the edge on the tension so that builds just so perfectly. Honestly a great read.
The House that Adelia Built by Mya O’Malley is a mysterious book that will keep you reading and wanting more at the end. The characters in the book are amazing and fully developed. I felt like I was in the story with them. I would be screaming one minute crying the next. You will be reading about the present and then there would be a flash back. It enhances the story and even gives you tidbits into the future. The setting of the Lighthouse makes this even more a great read. The story will take you up and down, twists and turns. Wow, what a book! This is a story within a story. We go back and forth from the late 1800’s to now, and we meet and follow 2 women. Adelia from the past and Hope from now.
This story was full of mystery and I loved it.
The characters in this were like none ive ever read before. I just instantly felt connected to them and that’s never happened so fast for me.

This story put me in the mind of Stephen King. I felt creeped out just by the authors wording. The whole vibe of the book gave me chills. Hope’s name and personality did not match. She was a loner and I couldn’t figure out why. I usually don’t read ghost stories because my grandma made us watch all of Stephen Kings movies in the dark. But picking this book was a good choice. The author gave us an amazing story that takes place in 2017 and flashes back to 1876. So many women are in situations like Adelia and see no escape. It was crazy how the lighthouse called to her like that was her fate. Then there is Clooney(REALLY!) he was likable and I adored Tracy she did her best to get Hope out of her loner mentality.
The House That Adelia Built by Mya O’Malley is a book that weaves a story that will leave you thinking about it after you have finished.
This story follows two women – Hope and Adelia. One woman lives in the present and one woman lived many years before. Both of their stories centre around the lighthouse that has become their home. For Adelia it is meant to be the place for her new marriage to start. For Hope it is the safe haven she never wants to leave.
With so much pinned on the lighthouse can it be everything that each woman wants?
This book was such a good read. I hadn’t been sure at first when I read the blurb but I am so glad I gave this book a chance. The story that the author tells is so deep and emotional. You become invested in both of these women – you feel their pain, their happiness. The way it switches between each of them, so you get to see both sides, is well done. This book is definitely worth your time.

The House That Adelia Built is a Paranormal/ Romance/Mystery set in a lighthouse by Mya O’Malley. This is the second book I have read by Ms. O’Malley, and it is my new favorite. This book hooked me from the very first page. The dual stories were full of mystery and intrigue. Hope and Adelia’s characters really touched me. I love how the author jumped between the late 1800’s and present day. This story will pull on your heartstrings and have you rooting for Hope to learn to trust. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a great romance, or an intriguing ghost story.

The House that Adelia Built by Mya O’Malley is so much more than a paranormal romance. There is so much going for this fascinating tale of love, lies, loss, betrayal, heartache, mystery, suspense, nightmares, discovery, surprises, isolation, madness, confusion, conflict, drama, adventure, happiness, tragedy, unravelling the truth, trust, and finding closure. The story had so many interconnected elements and character details that I really was glued to the pages and paying close attention to what I was reading- so I wouldn’t miss a thing. The story had my mind racing, trying to piece it all together and figure out where Ms. O’Malley was taking the storyline- I had so many scenarios running through my head, but never managed to pin down exactly where the story would lead, such was the unpredictable nature of this fantastic read. I really didn’t see that ending coming!! Ms. O’Malley proves once more that she excels at weaving compelling and captivating paranormal stories.
The storyline switches back and forth from past to present perspectives quite seamlessly and allows the reader to really get a feel for the story and characters. I was emotionally invested in the story and the wonderful character- and I definitely shed a few tears through this book, because I was just so immersed in the story and felt for the characters and what they had been/were going through.
The characters are really unique, well crafted and somewhat quirky individuals who came to life with Ms. O’Malley’s clever wordsmithing. I loved all the interconnected details of the story and how seemingly small elements/connections were later found to have much greater meaning/importance.
I really recommend this book to anyone who loves a great paranormal storyline, with some supernatural elements, some mystery and suspense, wonderful characters, some romance, and surprises that will keep you on your toes. I really can’t wait to read whatever Ms. O’Malley does next, she never disappoints!
Thank you, Ms. O’Malley!
I should have known better than to start a new book at 10pm on a Sunday night. Seriously, I am way smarter than that, right? You would think. Guess what I started reading last night at 10pm? Guess who is yawnnning today at work? Yup, it’s me. Once I “cracked the binding” on this book I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN.
THE HOUSE THAT ADELIA BUILT is told in past and present tense with 2 different characters. You could deconstruct the book and almost make two different stories in their entirety.
There are emotions that are explained with such clarity that I was instantly able to identify and got a pit in my stomach. There are situations which are so obviously going to turn left that when the light on the lighthouse shined bright, I was surprised with what I saw.
This is one of those books that I want to do a total recap on to explain why YOU should read it. I’m not going to do that. This is one of those books that I want to tell you about each character, but I won’t.
I will tell you this. If it’s Sunday night at 10pm and you have to work in the morning, be prepared to yawn on Monday.
FANTASTIC!!!
