The brilliant, chilling debut of Karen White’s New York Times bestselling Tradd Street series, featuring a Charleston real estate agent who loves old houses—and the secret histories inside them. Practical Melanie Middleton hates to admit she can see ghosts. But she’s going to have to accept it. An old man she recently met has died, leaving her his historic Tradd Street home, complete with … home, complete with housekeeper, dog—and a family of ghosts anxious to tell her their secrets.
Enter Jack Trenholm, a gorgeous writer obsessed with unsolved mysteries. He has reason to believe that diamonds from the Confederate Treasury are hidden in the house. So he turns the charm on with Melanie, only to discover he’s the smitten one…
It turns out Jack’s search has caught the attention of a malevolent ghost. Now, Jack and Melanie must unravel a mystery of passion, heartbreak—and even murder.

I’ve got a crush on Jack! I loved this book and I absolutely couldn’t put it down. A smart young woman, two sexy men, a haunting old mansion – it just doesn’t get much better!
I would not say this is a hardcore mystery. I mean, it’s not really mysterious. It is a fun ghost story. And I like the characters and supporting characters. I think the ghost story is well written and the main characters are strong. I like the building and the foundation of the series, even though I have a personal loathing for the type of realtor the main character is (I hate realtors, but that’s me).
Love Karen White’s books. They always make you think about things from a different point of view. They also are entertaining and usually involve a mystery, which this one did.
This series is light reading, but very entertaining. The main character is well written and I cared about what happened to her throughout all the books.
If you know Charleston, SC you’ll love this book. It’s all about South of Broad and the historic homes and the ghosts who live there. The characters are interesting and the story is imaginative. Fun read.
Read the series. Easy read with history a paranormal episodes
I love Melanie Middleton. I love her flaws and her triumphs, and the way she just keeps picking herself back up. The whole cast of characters make for a perfect ghost story.
Enjoyed tremendously. I love looking at older homes so this was just right up my alley!
enjoyed all of the books in this series
I enjoy the characters, especially Jack’s daughter!
Decent summer-like read. Has elements I normally look for: likable characters, supernatural aspect, region of interest (love Charleston). I liked it enough to buy the next book in the series.
It was an easy read and very likable characters.
I am fascinated by all things Charleston. It has also been a dream of mine to own and restore one of the beautiful Charleston homes. So this book has everything for me. It is the first book in a series about these characters and Charleston. The characters are well developed and the story line twists and turns unexpectedly. References to various restaurants and places within the city that I have visited really brings the story to life. There is romance, or the hint of it, without being sappy. A great read.
Great series
Great book that sucks you in from the beginning. Can’t wait to read the rest of the series!
The first in a series set in that most romantic of cities, Charleston, South Carolina. The houses there are old and stylish, and the cuisine is fine. This series has everything: a bit of history, a bit of architecture and a bit of great food and local color, not to mention haunted mysteries. The characters are well drawn and the action keeps moving. All in all, a wonderful story on its own, but the first in a series that never gets boring.
loved the theme and would like to read more books by this autor!!!
Really good scary mystery. I enjoyed it.
As Charleston is one of my favorite cities, this book was a joy to read. It details some of my favorite places. The characters are well defined and the plot kept my interest with a mystery to solve.
I loved it and anything related to Charleston and the Civil War era. I am on book 2 now.
