The brilliant, chilling debut of Karen White’s New York Times bestselling Tradd Street series, featuring a Charleston real estate agent who loves old houses—and the secret histories inside them. Practical Melanie Middleton hates to admit she can see ghosts. But she’s going to have to accept it. An old man she recently met has died, leaving her his historic Tradd Street home, complete with … home, complete with housekeeper, dog—and a family of ghosts anxious to tell her their secrets.
Enter Jack Trenholm, a gorgeous writer obsessed with unsolved mysteries. He has reason to believe that diamonds from the Confederate Treasury are hidden in the house. So he turns the charm on with Melanie, only to discover he’s the smitten one…
It turns out Jack’s search has caught the attention of a malevolent ghost. Now, Jack and Melanie must unravel a mystery of passion, heartbreak—and even murder.

Really enjoyed the story and history
I enjoyed this series with some history, some family drama, some romance. Just a good read.
Great book
One of my all time favorites.
This is book one of a five book series which have awesome characters with a little bit of romance, mystery and ghostly encounters. The story takes place in historic Charleston, South Carolina. Karen White writes with wonderful descriptions of South Carolina and the historic neighborhoods of Charleston. I loved everyone of these books. Once you finish the first book you’ll want to continue to the next!
I am officially obsessed with Karen White and can’t wait for more books in the Tradd Street series. I especially love Charleston as a setting and the amazingly lifelike characters that populate her stories. The Tradd Street series is a nice mix of Romance, Paranormal, and Historical. It’s kind of perfect honestly!
I don’t normally like ghost or paranormal stories but I love old houses. I particularly enjoy learning about the restoration of old houses. This book went into good detail about the restoration process and the supernatural elements weren’t intrusive and seemed as if they could be believable. Sometimes the characters were somewhat annoying, but so are many real life people. Overall, I enjoyed this book and am now reading the second book in the series. However, I must say, it’s the details about Charleston and the old houses that keeps me coming back.
Loved this book
Really enjoyed the characters and the plot. I am ready to start another book with Melanie and Jack! The only criticism I can offer is that Mayo Clinic is in Rochester, MN, not Rochester, NY.
History, mystery, romance, and ghost! What a way to kick off a series. I enjoy Karen White’s books and I didn’t know how I would feel about this paranormal ghost story. But I really enjoyed all of it, the storyline, character development, and the mysterious nature, all well done. I think this book would appeal to all readers.
The first in the Series. A wonderful read that leaves you wanting more.
This series is among my all-time favorites. All Karen White novels are well worth the time.
Love Karen White
