Sherlock Holmes’s most famous case: An irresistible blend of Gothic horror and intricately plotted mystery The curse of the Baskervilles dates to the seventeenth century, when the wicked Hugo Baskerville chased a farmer’s daughter across the pitch-dark moor of Grimpen with vile intentions. The poor girl died of fright, but Baskerville’s fate was worse–a giant black hound, eyes afire and jaws … afire and jaws dripping with blood, tore out his throat and devoured it on the spot. Since then, the specter of that terrible beast has haunted Baskerville Hall, many of whose inhabitants have met violent, mysterious, and tragic ends.
News of the latest death is brought to 221B Baker Street by a local doctor who hopes that Sherlock Holmes can solve the riddle of the curse before it claims yet another victim or leaves the hall forever empty. Sir Charles Baskerville perished alone on the edge of the moor, his face twisted in fright, the footprints of a gigantic hound marking the ground twenty yards from where his body was discovered. Has the mythical monster returned? Or does some other villain now inhabit the desolate moorlands? Holmes and Watson will be pushed to the very edge of reason as they seek to discover just who–or what–wants to see the Baskervilles destroyed.

I loved this story. Love all written by Doyle. Sherlock is the best Det. Out there in the pages! Ive read the complete collection of sherlock holmes! Was a non stop cant put down read. The book is about 3 inches thick. Totally recommend anything writtenby Doyle you wont be let down. Wonder what if he was alive today he would continue the sherlock mysteries. That would be awesome!
Clever story. I like the characters in this story.
This is why the classics never die.
I was 11 when I read it and, though I’ve read quite a few of Doyle’s Holmes stories, as well as some by other authors, I’m not a die-hard Holmes buff. However, I loved this one and still remember being enthralled by Watson’s descriptions of nights on the moors.
Masterpiece of writing.
Classic novel ! Very scary !
very solid
It’s a Sherlock Holmes novel. They don’t get any better than that.
Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes is the most fascinating deceptive to be read. I love all of the stories
good mystery. sherlock holmes is a good read
Silly suspense. Fake fear. I’ve never bought into the theory there is only one possible reason for the chalk on his fingers, or the mud on his pants or whatever Holmes notices. The world is much to complex for such simplistic explanations, even in his day.
3.5 stars
I don’t know what my bias is to this famous Holmes story, but it’s always been one of my least favourites. I can’t deny it’s another masterful mystery, but I just always seem to enjoy it less than some others.
It has been years since I read this book or saw the film (Basil Rathbone starred). But my sister lived just a few miles from the old Baskerville estate and you can still see the gate posts which are topped by sculptures of a large dog with a spear thrust down it’s throat – which has always impressed me.
Sherlock Holmes what more can you say.
You can’t beat a Holmes mystery.
Arthur Conan Doyle builds a lot of suspense into his stories. His characters are well rounded and the setting is always brooding. Lots of fun.
Simply a “classic” Sherlock Holmes!!
Kept me turning pages
One of my all-time favorites. Perhaps Holmes’ most famous case. From page one readers are living in 1895. Packed with great scenes (some easy to overlook, like Dr. Watson’s subtly-hilarious interview with the sexpot Laura Lyons) and terrific atmosphere. I have reread it approximately twice a decade since the 1960s. “Mr. Holmes, they were the footprints of a gigantic hound!”
I love Sherlock Holmes and this is one of the classics. If you enjoy old time English mysteries, you will love it.
