Scotland 1556 After overhearing a plot to kill Mary Queen of Scots, Abby Gordon is sent from Paris to the Laird of Glenorchy’s home at Kilchurn Castle for safety. Disguised as a boy, she becomes a lute player among the household musicians where she encounters the laird’s hostage, the attractive Iain MacGregor, a pawn in the laird’s struggle for power in Scotland’s turbulent politics. But is Iain … is Iain really a hostage to fortune or is he playing his own dangerous game? As Abby’s feelings intensify for this Glenorchy hostage she is caught in the web of intrigue that permeates the household and is drawn deeper and deeper into danger.
With spice, wit and action packed plotting, Kristin Gleeson’s Highland Ballad Series is as compelling as Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander novels.

I did not like the book because I feel the author was lazy with the ending. She abruptly ended the book, obviously intending to take up the story in the next book in the series. I liked the story line, the characters were interesting – and there were a LOT of characters. Kristin Gleeson is a good writer, but I will not be reading more of her books. I’m not a fan of cliff-hangers.
abrupt ending
Doa
THis is part of a serial so it is short and there is no final resolution. The writing is good and the characters developing and interesting so I do recommend it for an easy read.
Love the setting and catchy theme.
You need to read the trilogy. The first book ends with no definitive ending so I know the 2nd book will end the same way. It is good reading and dont mind getting the next.book. looking forward to the 3rd book coming out.
Part of a trilogy of which the third book will be released in February 2018. This said, the trilogy is merely a device to sell more books as the story is easily and truly one book worthy only. The premise is entertaining enough yet the first 2 books end abruptly and to find out what happens you must ante up for the next book. While I did get the next book I feel rather tricked into what should be an unnecessary purchase.
So far as it went it was fine but it obviously left a lot of story to be told
Not much. I kept reading hoping it would liven up a bit , but it did not.
I read this, and the sequel and am anxiously awaiting the third of the series.
Really good historical fiction
Wonderful to read…story line kept me interested.
Fun to peek into life in Scotish castle life in the time just prior to Mary Queen on Scot. Interesting to learn the plight of females vs. males.
Want to read the sequels now!
Too much profanity
I did not finish this story. It was dragging too long but others might enjoy it.
Interesting protagonist, though the scenario is a bit unrealistic. Very readable.
Set in Scotland, historical details are interesting. Entertaining!
a romantic adventure with interesting female lead. I was hooked on this original story line.
One of those series that you need to read all at the same time or could it really be just one book. Wasn’t aware the last book is not released prior to reading. I like the characters, now just waiting.
