The Horse in My Garage and Other Stories is a hilarious addition to Patrick F. McManus’s existing work in humor. The author weighs in on his childhood, everyday life, and outdoor tales with his typical exaggerated commentary that will elicit a belly laugh from all types of readers.Read about the antics of Patrick’s friends Rancid Crabtree and Retch Sweeney in such stories as “Shaping Up for the … “Shaping Up for the Hunt” and “Bear Hunters.” McManus plays off the recent obsession with hoarders in his surprising story “The Lady Who Kept Things.” In the titular story, meet Patrick’s horse, Huckleberry, and enjoy the experience of all the problems that come along with owning your own horse—or keeping him in the garage.
Other great stories include:
- “Catch-And-Eaters,” about the importance of a forked stick when fishing
- “$7000 TV Historical Extravaganza,” a look at one director’s loose interpretation of historical accuracy and political correctness
- “A Lake Too Far,” concerning the woes of Patrick and his wife, Bun, on a fateful birding trip in Australia
- “Chicken Chronicles,” which involves Patrick’s memory of wandering around naked in the chicken yard when guests came to call

Life is too short to waste on boring, bad writing. I tried very hard to keep reading, but had to bail out after a chapter and a half. Deleted it. No good at any price, even $1.99.
Pat Macmanus is a great writer who catches you up in his world! Makes you look at you past and compare it! Love all his books!
I mainly picked this audiobook because of the picture of the horse in the garage. I loved all these funny short stories and could visualize him doing this and also I know people like this.
So happy to know this book. Made me long for when times were about friends and the mischief created just being a kid with a huge imagination.
Very much enjoyed this easy quick read. Have always enjoyed his books.
I am a fan of Patrick McManus and I really enjoyed this book!
Like catching up with an old friend if you have read any of Patrick McManus tales previously.
I have 9 of his short story books. This is not the best one but I listen to all of them again and again – just randomly if I ever want to laugh or feel amused. The audio book versions narrated by Norman Dietz are wonderful
Not that funny and a bit repetitious
Not the best Patrick McManus book I’ve ever read, but still entertaining.
Humor writing is a bit like a comedian. Some are funny others not so funny. Prepare yourself for smiles and laughter during and after reading.
Utterly boring
I’ve read and enjoyed most of the author’s books. This is a collection of stories that didn’t make the anthologies. Still good, but redundant.
Definitely not one of Patrick’s best. I’ve read quite a few of his books that I would rate as 5 Stars however. He’s one of my favorite authors and has been for a long time.
I have read every book he has written and love them all
Typical McManus, but not as funny as some of his other books.
If you have read his magazine articles from the hunting and fishing magazines much of it is old hat, but it is worth it to have them in one place
Pat will bemissed. I’ve been reading his works fo 60+ years. always entertaining and many times laughed until I cried.
McManus can do no wrong, enjoyed his articles for the magazine’s and laugh to almost lose bladder control. Hope he lives for many years, I look forward to his writings
Any time you see Patrick McMannis pick up that book and be ready to laugh. Every short story keeps you in stitches.
