Mr. Wickham is dead the night of the Netherfield Ball and Mr. Darcy is the main suspect as he was last seen storming out of Wickham’s tent that day! Not only that, he refuses to explain why no one can vouch for his exact presence at midnight even though he says he never left Netherfield…except for Elizabeth Bennet.
I love a good mystery and with Wickham being the victim, there certainly were more than enough suspects! Several new characters have been introduced which just added to the mystery. There were plenty of secrets lurking within the Meryton community that were slowly uncovered by gossip and actions as Colonel Forster, Mr. Stallard (the local magistrate) and Mr. Tanner (constable and innkeeper) investigated. The obsequious Mr. Collins had to help as he couldn’t allow the nephew of his esteemed patroness to be convicted of being a murderer! Then of course, Elizabeth Bennet felt she could not allow Mr. Darcy to hang because she knew he was innocent! Armed with what was slowly unveiled, I had my own suspicions of who murdered Mr. Wickham. I was completely wrong. I didn’t start changing my mind until the end and then again I was wrong!
The ending for me did feel a bit rushed with so much happening that at times didn’t seem logical. It also ended just a bit too tidy. That being said, I did enjoy the story very much, and I look forward to her next mystery in the series.
I have received this book for free. I am voluntarily posting this review and all opinions expressed herein are my own.
I confess, I am a P&P junkie. I have read and watched multiple iterations of Pride and Prejudice – some more satisfying than others. This variation is definitely worth a look.
The characters of Mr. Darcy and Lizzie are definitely true to form. There’s lots of humor – in the antics of Mr. Collins and Lizzie’s mother, Mrs. Bennet. Mr. Wickham has been murdered and Mr. Darcy is the prime suspect. His alibi – Lizzie but neither can reveal the truth of where Mr. Darcy was at the time of the crime without compromising Lizzie’s reputation. Now, Mr. Darcy must discovery the true culprit before he ends up in a hangman’s noose. This was so enjoyable – it was romantic how Mr. Darcy and Lizzie discover each other’s true nature; the mystery was a lot of fun; the inventiveness of Lizzie to guide the investigation; and it was just plain fun to spend some more time with these characters.
The narrator, Nancy Peterson, has a melodic voice with a light British accent. She has a good pacing and delivers the humor with great tongue-in-cheek manner.
I enjoyed revisiting with Lizzie and Mr. Darcy, if things were only a bit different. Gave a modern story line to characters that we like and want to see together.
A spin on P and P but with well developed character you route for
Great read.
Not quite the style I like…otherwise not a bad read. But don’t take my word for it…you may love it.
I really enjoyed the twists and turns of the murder investigation within the sotry
An interesting P&P variation with an original premise. The author does an excellent job of including the reader in the hunt for the true killer. I would read other works from this author.
Enjoyed
Can’t stop reading! Love the plot twist on a classic.
Probably the best Pride and prejudice variation I have read. It wasn’t just a rehash of the original plot and/or dialogue but actually had a believable plot of its own. The resolution was a little week but it was definitely worth my time. I would recommend it.
Enough of the Pride & Prejudice cast and story so it was sort of familiar, but enough of a twist to keep it interesting.
It gives information of the expectations of the women and men of that period and status in society. I consider this a historical novel in some ways. I like to learn about other periods of time and other countries and their traditions.
Great reenvisioning of the world and characters of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Thoroughly enjoyed the murder mystery idea and how it brought Darcy and Elizabeth together. Definitely great fun!
The story was given 3 different endings. Unusual but enjoyable.
I thought this would be a continuation of Pride & Prejudice, instead it was a re-writing of the story. It is hard to improve on Jane Austen and the author did not do so. While it was amusing, it was not compelling.
The author followed the traits of Jane Austen faithfully
Great fun for Jane Austen fans – recommend!!
Very beautiful ending. Loved the whole love story through out the book.
I love Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. I have read many versions by other authors. I like how each of the characters are true to their character in the first book, but we get a glimpse behind their facade to see their motive.
