A transporting, pageturning thriller that rips open a brand new universe, filling it with suspense. Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan have a dark vision to share — and they’ve created quite a duo in Hugo Blackwood and Odessa Hardwicke, a Sherlockian partnership for the ages.
Entertaining read, reminded me of the movie Fallen starring Denzel Washington and John Goodman. For me this was too similar to really enjoy as I kept comparing it to the movie. That’s just my opinion, pick up and give it a try!
Not sure what I was expecting when I started this book. I feel left confused and as if I need to go back and listen again. The book switches between timelines and I think that’s where it kept losing me. I feel like I don’t know enough about the paranormal element of the story. The parts I was able to follow were written well and being a Jersey Girl I enjoyed hearing about familiar areas. For now the book will go onto my re-read list and perhaps afterwards will merit a higher rating.
I received this audiobook via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Fast paced; original and intriguing. Original concept created & executed with great characters. Absolutely could not put it down.
Dark, creepy, and mystifying!
The Hollow Ones is an intense, supernatural thriller that takes you into the lives of three main characters, Odessa Hardwicke, Earl Solomon, and John Blackwood as their paths connect and intertwine on the hunt for the most unexplainable, wicked souls who have decided to terrorize and rack up body counts in the New York area.
The prose is calculated and gritty. The characters are unique, determined, and mysterious. And the plot, using a past/present, back-and-forth style unravels quickly into a horrifying tale of gruesome violence, senseless murder, immortal beings, a mysterious mailbox, and the shadowy corners of the unknown.
Overall, The Hollow Ones is an intricate, eerie, creative tale by del Toro and Hogan that gets more enigmatic with every page you turn and is definitely a good choice for occult fiction fans everywhere.
The Hollow Ones is the latest from Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan. I loved their collaboration on The Strain series. It is among my favorite horror series. So, I was very excited to read this first in a new series about an invisible evil that is plaguing New York. I feel like this is a book that you are better off going into not knowing a lot. I really enjoyed this one. It’s creepy, suspenseful and engaging.
I thought the world building was done very well. I had no problem understanding the mythology behind the Hollow Ones. The story goes back and forth between the present, the 60s and even earlier in history. I liked how the timelines all tied together. The characters were really interesting, especially Odessa. I really liked that it took her a while to buy into the reality of the situation. It was a very authentic reaction. John Silence was an intriguing character as well. He has a tragic backstory that has me intrigued. I want to get to know him more in future books. This is a great first book in the series. I highly recommend this one. I look forward to the next book.
Right from the beginning, I’ll say this, I’m a big fan of Guillermo del Toro’s work. I’ve seen many of his movies, although I’ve never read any of his books. After this one, I think I might.
This book is a thrill ride of supernatural and horror-style action. Believable characters, well-spun dialogue and a breakneck pace will keep you turning the pages until you hit the epilogue. I really hope that there are more of these books. The actual main character (either named John Silence or Hugo Blackwood, depending on which version you read) is a superbly original creation and I’d love to read more of his “adventures”.
SPOILERS
This is KINDA like the movie Fallen with Denzel Washington, but on a grander and creepier scale. A rookie FBI agent gets tangled up with a seemingly immortal alchemist to stop a horrible being that delights in causing mass murder. I LOVED IT.
I feel what I always feel after I finish a Guillermo del Toro book. Stunned, slack-jawed, awestrucked. What was this book? I can hardly find the words to describe it…read this book. Okay, it starts a little slowly and seems confusing from time to time but it will make sense.
Blackwood reminds me of Agent Pendergast…
Do you like paranormal books? How about crime thrillers? Well this book is both those items rolled into one with addition of romance and horror; making it the perfect combination of suspense, love and gore. The narrator does an amazing job at bringing this dark tale to life vividly right before my ears, it instantly grabbed my attention and never letting it go. This was a one sit listen for me. The only negative aspect is the length of time I now must wait for book two to come out. I highly recommend this book to all reader; it has something for everyone.
I had no idea what to expect from The Hollow Ones, but I thoroughly enjoyed this supernatural thriller. I’ve been reading so many books where they lead you to think it’s something supernatural, only to be explained away towards the end, so for me, this was a seriously refreshing read (or in my case, listen).
There are a few “main” characters and the narrator, Brittany Pressley, did an outstanding job with voices and accents to differentiate all the characters. Every single character came to life through her and I was in awe! I had to look twice to be sure I hadn’t misread that there was only the one narrator. She 100% pulled me into this story. This story also has non-linear timeline (1500’s, 1962, and present day), and Pressley did a superb job of keeping me straight on when and where I was in this story.
Quick summary: When FBI agent Odessa Hardwicke and her partner, Walt Leppo, get the news of an ongoing incident, they head to the home of disgraced politician Cary Peters, only to find him in the midst of a killing spree. Leppo manages to take a knife from Peters, but then the FBI agent inexplicably attacks Peters’s surviving child, giving partner Odessa no choice but to shoot him. Odessa is traumatized and placed on restricted duty which leads her to meet a retired agent who suggests Odessa writes to Hugo Blackwood for help understanding what she saw after killing her partner.
I loved the pacing of the story, and the more I learned of Blackwood, the more I liked him. I also liked the references to occultist John Dee.
I think The Hollow Ones is a great choice for those who like fantasy horror and/or supernatural thrillers.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Hachette Audio for the advanced Listening Copy and the opportunity to share my thoughts.
Random individuals have been murdering others as single homicidal events with no seemingly connections. These purposeless rampages are the subject matter centered around The Hollow Ones, making it an unforgettable horrific thriller of a read.
The dynamic duo of Guillermo Del Toro & Chuck Hogan return with a strong effort featuring characters that are forced to confront deadly creatures of chaos and ritualistic spiritual corruption. These two authors know how to weave a story from a shocking beginning to an unpredictable ending. Readers will enjoy this foul spirit ridden novel that relentlessly grips, and never lets go.
Guillermo Del Toro is a Mexican filmmaker, actor, former special effects makeup artist and author. These ongoing talents of story telling shine through in this newest novel and deserves to join his many acquired accolades. Chuck Hogan is the perfect writing partner having many achievements of his own including screenwriter and television producer. The talent for this project is overwhelming and it shows throughout every turn of the page.
