Now a major motion picture.A great modern classic and the prelude to THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely traveling any farther than his pantry or cellar. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard Gandalf and a company of dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an adventure. They have launched a plot to raid … plot to raid the treasure hoard guarded by Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon. Bilbo reluctantly joins their quest, unaware that on his journey to the Lonely Mountain he will encounter both a magic ring and a frightening creature known as Gollum.
A glorious account of a magnificent adventure, filled with suspense and seasoned with a quiet humor that is irresistible . . . All those, young or old, who love a fine adventurous tale, beautifully told, will take The Hobbit to their hearts. -New York Times Book Review

The classic original that spawned all the others, and D&D. This was read to me as a child and I still love it.
the white wizard and the little one
A classic to be sure. Excellent story…wonderful characters…a real page turner.
Just finished this one again for the year, It starts the same every time and is good to the end which ends the same every time:) But I like it!!
This is one of the fastest paced J.R.R. Tolkien books. A great classic.
Great read. Adventure, whimsical, and engrossing.
I’ve read this book at least three times. It’s a classic!
I thought it was a great book, and was captivated by it.
Love this book. It stands on it’s own very well. A great introduction to the LOTR, but again, can be read by itself and not damage anything from the series. I found this book to be more interesting and easier to read than LOTR. Characters and story lines are easy to follow. Has become a favourite in my list.
This is the classic that started it all. A must read for anyone interested in fantasy novels.
I first read the Hobbit way back in the summer before middle school. It was one of my assigned summer reading books and I hated it. I thought it was a really boring book about a bunch of men who did a ton of walking and smoking and the parts I did find interesting (the Elves) were a very small part of the book and over too soon.
(To be fair, it …
This is where it all began for me, my adventure into the world of fantasy, both terrifying and wondrous. The blueprint for everything fantastical which came afterwards, it’s a distillation of everything Tolkien learnt and loved about the old Scandinavian and Saxon tales, presented as an accessible yet incredibly deep children’s book. A …
I read this book at least once every few years and never tire of it.
One of my favorite books.
A classic. It just took me too many years to actually read it! Don’t be like me, read The Hobbit today if you haven’t.
This is a tale of a Great Fantasy adventure taken by a company of Dwarves, a Wizard and Hobbits, to defeat a Dragon. An exciting epic of travel, magic, and true friendship. Well written. I couldn’t put it down.
It’s Tolkien! Best read before the LoTR trilogy. Much better than the movies, and the movies were very good
You must read the Hobbit before reading Lord of the Rings. Tolkien wrote a classic novel of a whimsical group of characters. Must reading for young students.
An incredible book. Brilliantly written. Made me fall in love with books at an early age.
Great book, sometimes a little paced, but still very entertaining.
