Now a major motion picture.A great modern classic and the prelude to THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely traveling any farther than his pantry or cellar. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard Gandalf and a company of dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an adventure. They have launched a plot to raid … plot to raid the treasure hoard guarded by Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon. Bilbo reluctantly joins their quest, unaware that on his journey to the Lonely Mountain he will encounter both a magic ring and a frightening creature known as Gollum.
A glorious account of a magnificent adventure, filled with suspense and seasoned with a quiet humor that is irresistible . . . All those, young or old, who love a fine adventurous tale, beautifully told, will take The Hobbit to their hearts. -New York Times Book Review

The first line of this novel hooked me immediately. The book will remain a favourite of mine forever.
You won’t find a better book in this genre, period!
i don’t read into stories, so i love the hobbit and lotr books. i have reread them again and again. don’t care if there is a “hidden message”- just want a great story to take me away from the cares of daily living. this one does it every time!
Although many have come before me, I had to write a review of The Hobbit. For me, this book was a revelation, and the beginning of an adventure that would go far beyond the book. When presented with this story the initial reaction of my jaded 12-year-old self was something akin to a roll of the eyes and a soft groan. But, by the end of the first …
There’s not really much to say here except… Favourite. Book. Ever.
I read this for the first time as a teenager over 50 years ago. I read it out loud with my wife a few years later and then I read it’s again to my children another few years later. Now I am reading it to grandkids and even though the book was made into a very good movie, the book provides unique rhythms and cadences and a more complete story. …
Read this book and the 3 following twice. Don’t hesitate to read and enjoy these iconic books.
What can I say? It’s The Hobbit.
On boy, what can I say. Recommended reading for everyone who is interested in fantasy.
The Hobbit is a charming adventure story, perhaps one of the most charming and most adventurous ever told. This book lets you go on an adventure full of trolls, goblins, orcs, magic, dragons, dwarves, wizards, elves, gold, and everything a kid (of all ages) could ever want in a story.
An awesome tale that brings the world of Middle Earth to life! The reader is introduced to many characters that will return with his 3 volume The Return of the King. I highly recommend this book. I first read it when I was 11 years old and it started my love of reading Heroic Fantasy novels.
I enjoyed the book “The Hobbit”, many years before the movies came out. It is, actually, on my list of books that I re-read every so often and I always find something new. It is an original story and, in my opinion, there is nothing else like it out there. I wholeheartedly recommend “The Hobbit”.
This book is a classic for a reason.
The ‘Grandfather’ of epic fantasy! Makes one think “is it fiction?”…..
I read it many years ago in high school and was captivated by Middle Earth! One of the best series ever (IMHO).
Tolkien is so creative. I found the character’s and places names are a little hard to remember in the beginning, but I’m glad I stuck with it through The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. They ended up being wonderful creative adventure stories, also about the bonds of friendship.
Must read .
Can you live on Earth without reading this ?
The gold standard for world building. This isn’t a must read; it’s a why haven’t you read it yet?
Loved it! My number one favorite book of all time.
Such a great classic! For once, I reccomend watching the movies, then read the book. It really helped me keep the dwarves straight, and remember who the not-as-well-known characters (like Bard) were. A definite must-read!
