Now a major motion picture.A great modern classic and the prelude to THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely traveling any farther than his pantry or cellar. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard Gandalf and a company of dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an adventure. They have launched a plot to raid … plot to raid the treasure hoard guarded by Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon. Bilbo reluctantly joins their quest, unaware that on his journey to the Lonely Mountain he will encounter both a magic ring and a frightening creature known as Gollum.
A glorious account of a magnificent adventure, filled with suspense and seasoned with a quiet humor that is irresistible . . . All those, young or old, who love a fine adventurous tale, beautifully told, will take The Hobbit to their hearts. -New York Times Book Review

I have “ off-loaded” so many of my physical books (because there are so many), but this is one book and series that will stay in both my physical library and Kindle collection. I’ve read it several times, and find quotes to keep and character development aspects I’d not considered before. Lovely story!
I had never read any of the Lord of the Rings books because I thought they seemed heavy and hard to read, but I watched the movie about Tolkien and decided to try them. WOW! The writing is beautiful. Very engaging. It’s almost like you’re watching the book instead of reading it. The characters are well-developed and lovable. I like that Bilbo was …
A book worth reading. One of the most enthralling books I have read.
Really good book and I would recommend it to anyone that is into action and adventure.
Loved entire series
One of the books I’ve reread.
always love a classic. I read this first when I was in highschool and its appeal has never faded. Now have a leather bound copy and have sung all of the dwarves’ song to my children (badly).
Very entertaining and you don’t know what adventure or mythical creatures you would find in the next chapter.
I loved this book, I have re-read it almost four times and every time my love for this book increases immensely. I always avoid watching the movies which are based on a book because I think that books are more expressive than movies so this book was no different. I hope anyone who reads this review finds it helpful.
I love these books and I’ve read all of them several times!!!!
I admire Mr Bilbo Baggins sooo much. He has character and was himself thru thick and thin. Admirable..
One of my fav books of all time. An evergreen classic!
A classic if there ever was one. I have read it ten times over the years in multiple languages. This plus the LOTR books are wonderful!!
Everything a growing boy needs in a book. I don’t know how many times I’ve re-read it now but the numbers are in the double digits. This is, like so many, many others, one of my all time favorites.
I finally read this very recently, after reading many other fantasy novels. My reaction was, this was first, and still the best. It arouses many desires in the reader, and then satisfies them. For someone who didn’t like cinema, this is the one of the most cinematic books one could hope to read.
I don’t know
The Hobbit (or There and Back Again) by J.R.R. Tolkien is one of those out-of-the-ordinary books that only come around once in a lifetime. From all my memories of various books through the years, from varying authors that I love in all sorts of genres, none have come close to the brilliance and writing skill of Tolkien. The man must have had one …
I love the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I’ve read all of them several times!
This is the true start of the “The Lord of the Rings Trilogy”, although it can be a stand alone as well. I read this and compared it to the movie. Don’t get me wrong the movies were good, BUT when you compare it to your imagination, …….they suck. See for yourself!
This Is A Great Book!
I Recommend This Book To Read!
