Now a major motion picture.A great modern classic and the prelude to THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely traveling any farther than his pantry or cellar. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard Gandalf and a company of dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an adventure. They have launched a plot to raid … plot to raid the treasure hoard guarded by Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon. Bilbo reluctantly joins their quest, unaware that on his journey to the Lonely Mountain he will encounter both a magic ring and a frightening creature known as Gollum.
A glorious account of a magnificent adventure, filled with suspense and seasoned with a quiet humor that is irresistible . . . All those, young or old, who love a fine adventurous tale, beautifully told, will take The Hobbit to their hearts. -New York Times Book Review

Better than the movies and more captivating.
I think this is one of the best books that I have ever read. I have read it at least six times in my life and it will remain a book that I would reread again. Tolkien was way ahead of his time and the story was a wonderful work that got me interested in books and reading.
One of the classics
I like this book, my only problem is the beginning is very boring… The characters are cool and so is the plot, but… Maybe its just me, but I am only giving this book 3 stars because I think the beginning is kinda boring..
This is not going to be a structured review with a recommendation or warning to stay away. It’s really just going to be my musings on my first foray into written Tolkien. First, let me give a reference point–as I said, I’ve never read any Tolkien before this. I have seen all of the movies, though. I love the LoTR movies, though have only watched …
Fantastic start to the LOTR trilogy! THE book that started it all. Should be required reading by 7th grade!
Classic. Everybody should read this at least once.
I have read and reread the hobbit numerous times. to categorize tolkien is impossible for me. I never tire of reading his books. they are so special and unique. adventure, loyalty, action, betrayal, disappointment, heartbreak, joy, the unexpected- it’s all there and more to keep you guessing and turning the page. a definite must read.
Its Tolkien.
A wonderful start to an amazing series. This is a true classic series of books. It can stand alone, but you will want to read the rest. Recommend highly!
I first read The Hobbit perhaps 45-50 years ago. I was delighted to find a digital version and re-read it. I loved it as much now as I did when I was a young man!
Some call this the first book in the Lord of the Rings books. This is less intense than LotR so I used to read this to my kids when they were young. It is a bit hard to read outloud but I manages and it was more entertaining than the usual kids books you read at bedtime.
With this book Tolkien created a whole new style of fantasy stories, swords …
Read it as a little boy. It’s certainly a re-read.
One of my all-time favorite reads.
One of my perennial favorites. I read this one at least once a year. It’s the lightest and most geared toward young children of the all Middle Earth books, even though there are scary characters here and there.
If you haven’t read it, where have you been? Read it, then go on to Tolkien’s Trilogy.
loved this as a kid – easy intro into the other books
“There is nothing like looking, if you want to find something. You certainly usually find something, if you look, but it is not always quite the something you were after.” JRR Tolkien
There and back again! Never gets old!
One of my all time favorites.
I didn’t enjoy Bilbos adventures as much as Frodo and the gangs, but it was still very enjoyable to read!
