Now a major motion picture.A great modern classic and the prelude to THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely traveling any farther than his pantry or cellar. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard Gandalf and a company of dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an adventure. They have launched a plot to raid … plot to raid the treasure hoard guarded by Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon. Bilbo reluctantly joins their quest, unaware that on his journey to the Lonely Mountain he will encounter both a magic ring and a frightening creature known as Gollum.
A glorious account of a magnificent adventure, filled with suspense and seasoned with a quiet humor that is irresistible . . . All those, young or old, who love a fine adventurous tale, beautifully told, will take The Hobbit to their hearts. -New York Times Book Review

J.R.R. is a premier writer of Science Fiction and Fantasy books! I picked up the Hobbit in 1964, and blew thru the first 4 books in less than a week! Just couldn’t put them down!
Then in 1992, I received the audio CD’s of the books, as I was traveling for work. I could enjoy them all over again, with out packing the hardback books along!
“May the wind under your wings bear you where the sun sails and the moon walks.”
I remember reading The Hobbit in middle school and it was one of those books that I never fully appreciated. At that point I wasn’t an avid reader unless it was for school and of course being a teen, I didn’t really pay attention to the story I just read it and moved …
Brilliant book – suitable for adults, as well as children. MUCH better than the films…! This is a gentle introduction to the darker themes in The Lord of the Rings.
The hobbit was good too. It seemed more disjointed and by that I mean the story did not flow as good as the rest of the series.
A true classic. Better than the movies!
This is the book that started it all. This is the tale of an unusual protagonist, a small Hobbit named Bilbo Baggins, who was unwillingly chosen by the wizard Gandalf to join in one of those nasty adventures that Hobbit-folk tend to avoid. And after a strange encounter with a band of thirteen Dwarves in his own home, he is enticed by the adventure …
It’s cute!!
This prelude to Lord of the Rings is the story of Bilbo Baggins – a Hobbit that is enjoying the quiet life. One day Gandalf the wizard and his company show up at his door and together they go on a quest to raid the treasure of Smaug the dragon. Bilbo reluctantly agrees and has no idea what is in store for him.
I have to admit that I have not …
It is now a classic.
I read The Hobbit when I was twelve years old and it expanded my imagination to places I was not aware at that age it was possible. In my opinion, it is an exceptional book that carries the reader to fantastical journeys and inspirational adventures.
Just about everyone’s favorite character, Bilbo Baggies, stars in this amazing adventure story with wizards, bad guys, good guys and lots of good food. Heart-warming and memorable, this book will steal into your heart for a lifetime. Wonderful for teens as well.
Introvert gets kiddnaped by friends and dragged off on an adventure.
Bilbo Baggins was content to stay in the Shire, living his days out in his hobbit hole. But when Gandalf the wizard visits the Shire and Bilbo invites him to tea, the hobbit’s life changes forever. Thirteen dwarves show up on his doorstep with Gandalf, speaking of an adventure to reclaim their family’s mountain and gold from the dragon Smaug. The …
I read the Hobbit when I was in high school. I also have read Lord of the Rings. I have the movies and enjoy all of them. A wonderful writer and really have enjoyed the fantasy.
What can I say? One of my absolute favorites, of course! Tolkien is one of my main writing inspirations, and his stories will live on forever and always be loved by true fantasy enthusiasts. I love the intricate world-building, and how each race, from hobbits to dwarves to elves, has such unique characteristics that make them come alive on the …
I first read The Hobbit when I was in elementary or middle school and wasn’t impressed. But I read The Lord of the Rings in High School and loved it. I enjoyed The Hobbit much more this time around. It’s a good fantasy story with a mixture of adventure, humor and a powerful message. Though not as rich as The Lord of the Rings in terms of the …
There is an innocent charm to the book that started it all.
Wonderful classic. Highly recommend. If you’ve only seen the movies you need to discover the original story.
A great read and comically the standard by which all fantasy compares itself. The Hobbit is well written although at times it does appear to be slow or on tangents, but a very great fantasy book of all time.
College read years ago but I really enjoyed the book and have reread it more than once along with the Lord of the Rings. Lots of Biblical elements! Bilbo is great character; he and his companions have many wonderful adventures. Wish I could have gone along!
