Now a major motion picture.A great modern classic and the prelude to THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely traveling any farther than his pantry or cellar. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard Gandalf and a company of dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an adventure. They have launched a plot to raid … plot to raid the treasure hoard guarded by Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon. Bilbo reluctantly joins their quest, unaware that on his journey to the Lonely Mountain he will encounter both a magic ring and a frightening creature known as Gollum.
A glorious account of a magnificent adventure, filled with suspense and seasoned with a quiet humor that is irresistible . . . All those, young or old, who love a fine adventurous tale, beautifully told, will take The Hobbit to their hearts. -New York Times Book Review

This is one of my favorite books and Bilbo Baggins is my favorite character. Why? Because he’s brave, he stepped out of his comfort zone to have an adventure, he did great things, and had a life worth writing about. The more I read this book, the more I love it.
Out of all the things that can help a human being to live as full and happy a life as possible, developing a true love of reading is very difficult to top. Since the earlier this happens the better, an impactful and exciting work of literature that can grab tightly hold of a young person’s fresh imagination and set it alight, must be placed on …
Can’t believe I haven’t posted on this yet. I remember finding this in the public library in the Bronx. A hardcover with the original cover. I thought the drawing was intriguing. Read it, loved it and ran back to the library and was so excited there were three more books in the same world by the same author.
As an adult I’m amazed Tolkien managed …
Wonderful storytelling- invokes a wide range of emotions every time I read it. Excellent description of characters and surrounding world all artfully woven together – really pulls you into the story. Underlying message similar to C.S. Lewis’ Narnia. Lighter and easier to read than Lord of the Rings volumes.
This book is what got me start in the fantasygenre and made me the reader I am today. Today I read more than just fantasy but My love of books started with this book.
This is one of my favorite movies, and the book does not disappoint either. The story is great, the character descriptions are wonderful and the length of the book is perfect. The Hobbit is a great adventure, and you will not want to out it down.
This is one of my favorite books of all times. If you like fantasy and haven’t read it yet it’s a must. The plot and characters are so well developed you feel like you know and love the characters and the land they live in. It makes you laugh and cry. Most people have probably seen the movie but the book is better.
The Hobbit The Lord of the Rings Harry Plotter and The Chamber of Serpents, A Potter Secret Parody
Come on, it’s TOLKEIN. And yea, I know The Hobbit is a kids book, and yea I know it doesn’t really serve well as a prequel to Lord of the Rings. But it’s a great kids book, fun, and does give some background to Middle Earth.
Read this as a teen and just recently re-read and was just as good.I for see me reading again and again!
Interesting start to The Lord of the Rings series. I’ve never read the books nor have I seen the movies. I never really knew what they were about so when I started The Hobbit, I was, in essence, flying blind. I was quite interested in the novel. A lot of adventure and the characters are very witty at times. I loved the detail that was put into the …
This was my first introduction to fantasy, and my daughters’ as well. The writing is simple by today’s standards but still holds up. The characters are very well-developed, while the world building is very thorough.
Many know this tale. However reading it in the book is a different experience. It’s not so rushed, and yet is better explained. The story is laid out in such a way that it is easier to keep up with than even the movie.
This book however, I felt it was more young adult or older child. That would never stop me from a great book. But I feel it was …
Soulful
If you are a lover of fantasy, this is the perfect book to initiate your kids! It is simple and entertaining. It is a story that leads into the Lord of the Rings. But it doesn’t have to be directly tied to it. So it can be used as a carrot later for kids, when they thought that it was the meal before.
Tolkien uses fantastic characters to draw …
This cemented my love if fantasy as a young adult.
Classic, masterful world building adventure. Bench mark of fantasy.
I loved this series when I was younger!!
SO GOOD
It was my first exposure to fantasy and it just sucked me in…
A classic book that started it all.
