Seconds before Earth is demolished to make way for a galactic freeway, Arthur Dent is plucked off the planet by his friend Ford Prefect, a researcher for the revised edition of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy who, for the last fifteen years, has been posing as an out-of-work actor.
Together, this dynamic pair began a journey through space aided by a galaxyful of fellow travelers: Zaphod Beeblebrox—the two-headed, three-armed ex-hippie and totally out-to-lunch president of the galaxy; Trillian (formerly Tricia McMillan), Zaphod’s girlfriend, whom Arthur tried to pick up at a cocktail party once upon a time zone; Marvin, a paranoid, brilliant, and chronically depressed robot; and Veet Voojagig, a former graduate student obsessed with the disappearance of all the ballpoint pens he’s bought over the years.
Where are these pens? Why are we born? Why do we die? For all the answers, stick your thumb to the stars!

Everyone should read the entire series. DON’T watch the horrible movie! Although the BBC series is hokey, it’s still better than the movie.
A real classic, funny, satirical, ironic.
This is one of my favorite books of all time. Just when you think it’s serious something completely illogical happens.
I had heard friends and associates raving about this book for years and finally read it. Sorry, but I didn’t think it was that great.
I have read this book so many times it is amazing. Every time I read it I find something new to laugh at. The man was a genius, when it came to humor. One of my favorite writers of all time.
Love this book! Really funny off the wall characters and plot.
A satirical classic.
Delightful, one of a kind…until he wrote his next one. Douglas Adams was unique, such a crazy, delightful sense of humor.
wow did I not like this book, guess I am too old to appreciate it
One of the funniest books ever written, must-read for any sci-fi fan.
There is no way you cannot read this book. Or the sequels. It’s a big “what if” the world isn’t as we think we know but is really…..and then it goes on from there. So fun and funny and insightful and imaginative. I think one of my favorite characters is Marvin if only because I know too many Marvins and Mr. Adams portrayal is hilarious. There’s …
A classic, laugh-out-loud funny book. It is so over-the-top ridiculous that you can easily suspend any sense of belief and just enjoy the read.
This book made me want to be a writer. Actually, it made me want to be Douglas Adams, but mainly to be a writer. It was obvious that whoever had written this must have had a ton of fun doing so, and I wanted some of that for me.
Everyone should read this at some point in their life.
This book is awesome. Funny, and sometimes startlingly true, it is a riotous look at what accidental space travel might look like. LOVED it.
Just loved this book- it’s fun, silly, crazy in a great way!
whimsical
This is one of the funniest books I have ever read.
Fantastic! Amusing! Enjoyable! Unusual! Great FUN!
I highly recommend reading not only this book (the 1st) but all of them. They defy description. If you enjoy Jasper Fforde or Magnus Flyte, give Douglas Adams a try.
Loved it. Only read 3 of the books. Funny and amazing the situation they get into.
