Seconds before Earth is demolished to make way for a galactic freeway, Arthur Dent is plucked off the planet by his friend Ford Prefect, a researcher for the revised edition of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy who, for the last fifteen years, has been posing as an out-of-work actor.
Together, this dynamic pair began a journey through space aided by a galaxyful of fellow travelers: Zaphod Beeblebrox—the two-headed, three-armed ex-hippie and totally out-to-lunch president of the galaxy; Trillian (formerly Tricia McMillan), Zaphod’s girlfriend, whom Arthur tried to pick up at a cocktail party once upon a time zone; Marvin, a paranoid, brilliant, and chronically depressed robot; and Veet Voojagig, a former graduate student obsessed with the disappearance of all the ballpoint pens he’s bought over the years.
Where are these pens? Why are we born? Why do we die? For all the answers, stick your thumb to the stars!

I bought this book during one of my homeless trials… it made me laugh very hard and protected me from bitterness.
If you like British humo(u)r, if you like science fiction, if you like Norwegian Fjords, this is the book for you!
Might be a decent british kids book. A bit too random, coloqual, and lacking in character depth. But – I’m not a fan of Monty Python either.
Classic, unique read. Top ten all time favorite
First, why are you reading this review? if you already love the books and you’ve liked the Series and the movie, great. If you haven’t read the books, you absolutely have to. they’re terrific, and they form an important part of our culture.
read them. you don’t like them for a non-understandable reason, well, that’s on you. But I love them, and …
This book is become a classic and I guess you could say it has a group of followers.
One of the archetypal classics of the sci-fi genre.
Everyone should read this as Adams is a literary icon – at least in the US.
iconic and absurd sci fi classic. Douglas Adams is as wacky and weird as anyone could want. This and his Dirk gently stories stretch my love of the strange and whimsical to it’s limits. so long, and thanks for all the fish.
This series just rocks, in an English countryside sort of way. After being destroyed and tossed out into a galaxy of unknowns anyway.
Always good for a laugh! This is a book to read again and again and to share with the family.
Douglas Adams’ The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, is beyond quirky. It’s slightly demented, witty, funny, and at its whimsical core—is an offbeat wisdom that catches the reader by surprise. I first read this book when I was in college, when the world seemed like my own private adventure to explore. I always remembered to take my towel.
I love this book. It’s so realistic and lovely.
The Hitchhiker’s Guide, and the full series, are a romp into an absurdist take on our current culture as it has morphed in the future. It makes you think, it makes you laugh, and it makes you look again at the absurdities of today. Excellent, fun, escapist science fiction.
Read this many years ago, but just recently had a brief, but charming discussion about 42 with a total stranger. No spoilers! Read it to find out.
It’s a classic for a reason–it’s a hoot!
I’m not usually a massive fan of sci-fi, but this book by Douglas Adams had me hooked. It was the combo I never knew I needed; science fiction and sarcastic humor. Perfect.
This is a must read book. I quote things out of this book all the time. The secret of how to fly, the answer to the universe, bistro math. Every chapter is a mew look at the life.
OMG!! this tr4ilogy of 4 books is fantastical. Go for it if you are any kind of science fiction fan or like English humor and nonsense. SO GOOD and silly and whimsical and strange.
Just am amusing read enjoyed the series as well
