Seconds before Earth is demolished to make way for a galactic freeway, Arthur Dent is plucked off the planet by his friend Ford Prefect, a researcher for the revised edition of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy who, for the last fifteen years, has been posing as an out-of-work actor.
Together, this dynamic pair began a journey through space aided by a galaxyful of fellow travelers: Zaphod Beeblebrox—the two-headed, three-armed ex-hippie and totally out-to-lunch president of the galaxy; Trillian (formerly Tricia McMillan), Zaphod’s girlfriend, whom Arthur tried to pick up at a cocktail party once upon a time zone; Marvin, a paranoid, brilliant, and chronically depressed robot; and Veet Voojagig, a former graduate student obsessed with the disappearance of all the ballpoint pens he’s bought over the years.
Where are these pens? Why are we born? Why do we die? For all the answers, stick your thumb to the stars!

I tried to read this book when I was much younger, and couldn’t “get” it. I am really enjoying it now!
Required reading in sci-fi/fantasy genres. First of a five book trilogy you will want to finish. Prophetic of smart phones and Wikipedia, if not the internet…
Douglas Adams was a gift. The Hitchhikers trilogy was an amazing set of books to read. I’ve read his works over and over through the years.
“Long strange trip” in space, along with wacky but memorable situations.
If you haven’t read, reread, and loved The ‘Guide, you’re not a real reader.
I loved everything about it
waist of time
He started the genre of Scifi parody! This is the masterwork against which all others are measured. Must read – if you can deal with the mind-twisting wit.
Hysterical!
Truly a very funny look at life after earth. I would heartily recommend it. You won’t be disappointed.
Douglas Adams approach to time travel and the hilarious situations he puts his characters in keeps you wanting to come back for more and lookin g for his next endeavor.
The whole series is worth reading.

Sci-fi classic. After Earth is destroyed, an everyman ends up being one of two remaining humans traveling through space with the help of his alien friends.
