Seconds before Earth is demolished to make way for a galactic freeway, Arthur Dent is plucked off the planet by his friend Ford Prefect, a researcher for the revised edition of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy who, for the last fifteen years, has been posing as an out-of-work actor.
Together, this dynamic pair began a journey through space aided by a galaxyful of fellow travelers: Zaphod Beeblebrox—the two-headed, three-armed ex-hippie and totally out-to-lunch president of the galaxy; Trillian (formerly Tricia McMillan), Zaphod’s girlfriend, whom Arthur tried to pick up at a cocktail party once upon a time zone; Marvin, a paranoid, brilliant, and chronically depressed robot; and Veet Voojagig, a former graduate student obsessed with the disappearance of all the ballpoint pens he’s bought over the years.
Where are these pens? Why are we born? Why do we die? For all the answers, stick your thumb to the stars!

Mostly harmless.
I don’t read a lot of fiction, but I had high hopes for the book. For dedicated Sci-fi fans it would be a good read, but for those who aren’t maybe not.
Just could not get into it.i rad 25% and said no more.
This is one of my favorite books of all time. I’ve read it a lot and enjoy it every time.
I read this as a teenager and loved it. Made me laugh and dream a lot. Definitely recommend to everyone
This is the Douglas Adams book that started it all. It’s really funny. Being familiar with a typical British kind of humor — very dry and witty verbally, but very broad and slapstick physically — helps but it won’t keep anyone from enjoying the story.
Not for me
Classic
This is one of those books that everyone should read while they can still laugh at the absurdity of our universe.
well it was an ok story as science fiction goes but it stopped right in the middle and morphed off in to some other tale about how they tried to make it into a movie and finally did. the movie tale was completely boring and unnecessary. i felt i didnt get my money’s worth.
Quirky. Had to read due to the cult following. Not the worst, but too facile. Writing was fair to good.
Two Words — TOTALLY AWESOME!!!
A classic of comedic writing.
It’s a classic and a must read for all geeks.
I use turns of phrase from this book because they perfectly explain the situation. You might think this review “a load of dingo’s kidneys.” For example.
Do you know where your towel is? Mind the big yellow bulldozers. . . Should you fall simply forget to land. Improbability drive. If any of those seemingly unrelated statements pique your imagination then read this book. If not, simply admire the fjords.
An oldie but so much fun. I try to reread it every couple of years. There is a biography out about Douglas that I’d like to read sometime.
Very interesting ….liked learning about the symbolic meaning of different flowers.
Totally off the wall – an acid trip on a page.
How many words can you say to mean absolutely nothing.
