Seconds before Earth is demolished to make way for a galactic freeway, Arthur Dent is plucked off the planet by his friend Ford Prefect, a researcher for the revised edition of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy who, for the last fifteen years, has been posing as an out-of-work actor.
Together, this dynamic pair began a journey through space aided by a galaxyful of fellow travelers: Zaphod Beeblebrox—the two-headed, three-armed ex-hippie and totally out-to-lunch president of the galaxy; Trillian (formerly Tricia McMillan), Zaphod’s girlfriend, whom Arthur tried to pick up at a cocktail party once upon a time zone; Marvin, a paranoid, brilliant, and chronically depressed robot; and Veet Voojagig, a former graduate student obsessed with the disappearance of all the ballpoint pens he’s bought over the years.
Where are these pens? Why are we born? Why do we die? For all the answers, stick your thumb to the stars!

I reread this every few years, preferably out loud. Still hilarious! What an understanding of human nature!
I read this book and the one he wrote after this book, this is a book that you may not put down but you will definitely laugh a lot reading it,there are not many books out there that come close to how unique the story is or the quality in which it was written,I have read thousands of books and I can say this book is in my top twenty read so far.
A must read for those who enjoy a good game of Calvin-ball .
The best of the series without a doubt.
A classic of Western Literature!
A must read for anyone who appreciates science fiction and comedy together.
This is my favorite novel of all time.
A true science fiction classic. As enjoyable on the 10th reading as the first!
Earth is going to be demolished to build an off-ramp for an intergalactic freeway. Any deja vu thoughts?
It’s a good look at what the people whose houses or business are demolished are feeling, what their reactions are – without any thoughts from most of us.
love this book strange and funny and a hoot to read my whole family love it.
Typical Brit humor and it was a surprisingly short book. Having seen the movie long before I read the book, I was pleased to see the story in the Epilogue of how the movie came to be.
There are so many really great British writers out there but the late Douglas Adams is one of the best. His Hitchhikers series is one of the most original science fiction series I’ve ever read. From the Babel fish on it’s hilarious.
I had a little trouble tracking at first but when I just let it flow it was enjoyable. Was fun to talk to my teenage son about this book because he loves it.
If a philosophic world view has been eluding you, this book may hold the key!
not for logical thinkers
easy reading
not believable
I read this book years ago when it first came out. I think it is time for a reread. It was entertaining then, I’m not sure if I would just find it silly now.
Unique hilariously skewed view of the Universe!
fun, fantastic, and a great start to the whole Hitchhiker series.
read it 40 years ago
Imaginative and funny and ridiculous!! Loved it.
I never got into it. Why this is a classic is beyond me.
