Seconds before Earth is demolished to make way for a galactic freeway, Arthur Dent is plucked off the planet by his friend Ford Prefect, a researcher for the revised edition of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy who, for the last fifteen years, has been posing as an out-of-work actor.
Together, this dynamic pair began a journey through space aided by a galaxyful of fellow travelers: Zaphod Beeblebrox—the two-headed, three-armed ex-hippie and totally out-to-lunch president of the galaxy; Trillian (formerly Tricia McMillan), Zaphod’s girlfriend, whom Arthur tried to pick up at a cocktail party once upon a time zone; Marvin, a paranoid, brilliant, and chronically depressed robot; and Veet Voojagig, a former graduate student obsessed with the disappearance of all the ballpoint pens he’s bought over the years.
Where are these pens? Why are we born? Why do we die? For all the answers, stick your thumb to the stars!

Love it!!!
The singular classic entry in the ouvre of humorous science fiction.
This book was just okay for me. I’d heard so much about it and was looking forward to it, maybe too much. Others may love it, but it just didn’t grab me.
You can’t go wrong with this classic if you love sci-fi and humor. Read it if you haven’t already, and if you have, read it again.
Great series
The book was better then the movie. This book was only one of a series of books. I enjoyed them all.
Imagine how silly the universe might be if it were populated by creatures as silly as us. Very reminiscent of Monty Python.
What can you say about Douglas Adams. Suffice to say that if you haven’t read all of his books, you need to start now with this classic. You won’t be sorry.
READ THIS! It answers all your questions, even THE QUESTION OF THE UNIVERSE. Zaphod, Arthur, Ford and Trillion ride the infinite improbability drive to parts unknown in search of the true answer to one of life’s most vexing questions.
The Radio play was better.
I forced myself to read this because it is supposed to be such a great example of science fiction. I prefer Childhood’s End, Brave New World, Fahrenheit 451, and others. Those books were very pleasant reads.
I bought the book because it was on the 100 best books in America challenge and I was so disappointed. I couldn’t understand how it made this list. I kept asking myself if the author wrote this while on LSD. I struggled with giving it 2 stars. Maybe should have given it 1 star. 2 stars for being able to write down your weirdest dream in too much …
Douglas Adams has a very funny sense of humor. The ideas expressed in his comical way just echoe with laughter and some reality about the human condition buried in the mix.
VERY SLOW
Good campy fun.
Probably great a few decades ago!
I never go without my towel anymore!
Totally whacky! Unbelievable, but you can’t stop reading!
What can I say. Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is the bomb. I read both the book and watched the movie. Many laugh out loud moments. Try reading it through a crowd; each person reads a page. We were laughing all the time.
HILARIOUS!!!!
