Seconds before Earth is demolished to make way for a galactic freeway, Arthur Dent is plucked off the planet by his friend Ford Prefect, a researcher for the revised edition of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy who, for the last fifteen years, has been posing as an out-of-work actor.
Together, this dynamic pair began a journey through space aided by a galaxyful of fellow travelers: Zaphod Beeblebrox—the two-headed, three-armed ex-hippie and totally out-to-lunch president of the galaxy; Trillian (formerly Tricia McMillan), Zaphod’s girlfriend, whom Arthur tried to pick up at a cocktail party once upon a time zone; Marvin, a paranoid, brilliant, and chronically depressed robot; and Veet Voojagig, a former graduate student obsessed with the disappearance of all the ballpoint pens he’s bought over the years.
Where are these pens? Why are we born? Why do we die? For all the answers, stick your thumb to the stars!

A sci-fi classic. If you haven’t read it, grab a towel and jump in.
Funniest sci-fi comedy book ever! Always makes me laugh!
Wonderful beginning to a great series. I suggest this for just about everyone. My friends with widely varied taste all liked it.
Always remember to bring your towel!!!!!
I remembered it as a classic radio program of my youth, & encouraged my son to read it as well. But my memory of hearing it was better than actually reading it almost 5 decades later
One of my favorite books. Funny characters and totally unexpected stories. I highly recommend this book and it’s subsequent books in the series.
A wild and wonderful romp through the galaxy, with marvelous characters and truly bizarre situations. Join Arthur Dent in his involuntary journey through the cosmos for a good time.
I have just reread it after many years. I didn’t find it as funny as I did the first time. However, the inventiveness is still there and is, by any measure, worth a read.
Don’t take that off ramp
A must read. Adams is so clever. The satire in this series is fabulous. The movie was horrible,. The radio and TV shows captured some of the fun of his writing, but nothing compares to actually reading it. What can I say except 42!
My favorite absurd book of all time
A great old classic, love it!
Hysterically funny, loved every page.
read it in college. wanted an e-copy and this came avai;ab;e
Who couldn’t love this book??? I read it as a teen in the early 80s and lost my original copy. What a joy to be able to purchase this book again and fall in love with these characters all over again! I will never leave without a towel again!
Read this several times and it’s always a delightful and fun experience! As a satire of government and people in general, it is perfectly depicted. The movie is fun too!
C’mon. Seriously? You have not read this book? Why the hell not? It’s fantastic dry English humor written by a guy who was not afraid to write his way into a corner.
Oh, and 42.
The funniest, most entertaining, best characters ever written. I do not remember life before this trilogy because it had no meaning. Afterwards, there was still no meaning but the absurdity of it all makes it fun. 42 4ever.
one of my all time top 10. A must read!
Must read for any science fIctinus buff.
