Seconds before Earth is demolished to make way for a galactic freeway, Arthur Dent is plucked off the planet by his friend Ford Prefect, a researcher for the revised edition of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy who, for the last fifteen years, has been posing as an out-of-work actor.
Together, this dynamic pair began a journey through space aided by a galaxyful of fellow travelers: Zaphod Beeblebrox—the two-headed, three-armed ex-hippie and totally out-to-lunch president of the galaxy; Trillian (formerly Tricia McMillan), Zaphod’s girlfriend, whom Arthur tried to pick up at a cocktail party once upon a time zone; Marvin, a paranoid, brilliant, and chronically depressed robot; and Veet Voojagig, a former graduate student obsessed with the disappearance of all the ballpoint pens he’s bought over the years.
Where are these pens? Why are we born? Why do we die? For all the answers, stick your thumb to the stars!

This is the first in the series and is the corner stone for them all. It is a fast paced book with many twists that looks at the condition of humans in a far fetched manner that delightfully entertaining and should cause the reader to think carefully about the world and where it is going.
Hilarious
I have this book in paperback and hard copy. It’s one of my favorites that I keep going back to. It’s so different and humorous. I’ve had this for years.
Hitchhiker’s Guide is the apex scifi novel because you don’t know what’s going to happen next, and Douglas Adams never kept himself in check. That excitement of not knowing what’s coming next is what science fiction is all about.
Only read about 1/3 of it. Too lame and boring.
a classic
All books by Douglas Adams were great. Hard to put them down. This was the first and the one which inspired me to continue reading all of his other books.
rolicking good read
Distinctly British humor. I have loved it every time I’ve read it. The last time was out loud to my wife and 14-year-old daughter.
Provides many different perspectives from which to see situations – great voice.
This is a must read book that is funny, twisted, and informative. The companion books to this one are also must reads. I have never read a book with such twists of physics and hilarity of the story line.
I’m on my third copy. Need I say more?
The standard by which so many other things are measured!
Wildly original
You don’t have to be a science fiction fan to enjoy this laugh at so-called civilization.
It’s probably been over 20 years since I read this book. I did enjoy reading this book, much better than the movie. If you like crazy and fun Sci-Fi its a good read.
Pure fun and laughter
Not my type of Sci -Fi…Sadly.
I have read all of the books in the series and thought they were excellent reads. I heartily recommend the whole series, not just this book,
