Widow Selina Martin attends a house party with her betrothed, Cecil Canley-Smythe just weeks before they due to marry. Selina doesn’t love Cecil any more than she loved her late husband, but she does love her son Gerald and will willingly sacrifice her own happiness to ensure his future. She has finally resigned herself to a passionless, loveless marriage when a chance meeting changes everything.
A well-known rake, Brock Drummond, the Earl of Bruard, noticed Selina from the moment he laid eyes on her. He knows that she has noticed him too and makes sure they meet. She has just concluded a meeting with Cecil in the library and has taken a moment for herself before heading up to bed, when Brock makes himself known. They talk and she is surprisingly candid about her relationship with Cecil and why she must marry him. Brock offers her a week of pleasure; no strings attached and is surprised and excited when she agrees. And so, begins an affair that will rock them to their core and may break their hearts and shatter their perfectly constructed plan when it ends!
This was a very well written book, with likable characters that were easy to sympathize with, some very HOT love scenes, a true hero moment at the end and a nice HEA complete with an epilogue. So why not 5 stars? Sigh – she was betrothed to another man and cheated on him with Brock – I just can’t like that – if she wasn’t actually betrothed, if she was just being courted with the expectation of marriage – I might have been less upset, but I felt like she made a commitment to Cecil and she went behind his back and had an affair, with the intention of keeping it from him and marrying him. That is just not something I can nonchalantly overlook. This is the seventh book in the series and can easily be read as a standalone title. Despite my disappointment in the heroine’s cheating, I know this doesn’t bother everyone and if you fall in that category, I would happily recommend this book.
Who doesn’t love a reformed rake? The most skilled lovers make the best husbands!
The dynamic between Brock and the widowed Selina is hot, and their interactions are beautiful – a slow unfurling of discovering the other half of one’s soul while the sexual tension ramps up so high it melts the snow.
Delicious and tender by turn, this is a lovely story of two lost people finding one another.
Highly recommended.
I do love a good historical, a rake who can be reformed and a heroine who is beautiful on the inside and out. You can’t go wrong with an Anna Campbell story, this author has a magical way with words and knows how to pull a reader in and bring the characters to life on the pages.
Selina Martin is widowed with a nine year old son, and she needs to marry again to protect her son and is preparing to marry very soon the man she is to marry is wealthy but not very caring. When she meets libertine and rake Lord Bruard her heart sings like never before and the offer of a week as his mistress is hard to knock back one week of pleasure and joy before a lifetime of boring duty, a week to make her smile.

A sizzling sensual story that is sure to make the reader very happy, thank you MS Campbell for another keeper.

Selina Martin, now widowed, is ready to once again do her duty and enter a second marriage of convenience. Her father arranged her first marriage to Roderick, who turned out to be a gambler, who left her in a poor financial situation upon his death. It was not a happy time for Selina, and her son, Gerald, is the only good thing to come from it. Now she can’t even afford his school fees, and has therefore agreed to wed Cecil, a wealthy man nearly thirty years older than she. With only two weeks until the wedding, the couple is attending a house party, and Selina can tell that marriage number two is going to be just as unfulfilling as the first. When a notorious libertine makes Selina a surprising offer, she’s inclined to accept.
Brock Drummond, Earl of Bruard, finds that he’s terribly attracted to one of the guests at the house party, the fiancée of another man. When his hidden position allows him to hear a private conversation between the engaged couple, he can see that Selina is in for a miserable life. When Cecil leaves, Brock confronts Selina, questioning why she would marry such a man. Selina is usually quite reserved, but finds herself confiding her circumstances to Brock, who is truly sympathetic to her plight. When Brock observes that his attraction to Selina is mutual, he offers a no-strings, pre-wedding fling, a holiday away from reality to experience genuine passion for the first time in her life. Amazing even herself, Selina agrees, badly wanting to do one thing totally for herself and her own pleasure.
Selina and Brock spend their week together in one of his secluded properties. While their physical relationship goes way beyond what either expected, they find themselves becoming emotionally connected, as well. Their short time together flies by, and neither wants to let the other go. As Brock returns Selina home in his carriage, they are both troubled, confused, and sad. And, as fate has a way of doing, their secret rendezvous becomes known, jeopardizing Selina’s upcoming marriage, even possibly impacting her custody of her son.
Anna Campbell really turned up the heat in this installment of the Lairds Most Likely series, which easily reads as a standalone. Both Selina and Brock are sympathetic characters, with Brock being not so wicked, and Selina living a sad, dutiful life. I loved how Selina bloomed and came alive in Brock’s company, and how he found peace and satisfaction with her. THE HIGHLANDER’S FORBIDDEN MISTRESS is an emotionally satisfying romance which provides a lovely happy ever after for a deserving couple, and plenty of steam along the way.
Anna has hit it out of the park again! Every time I read a new book by Anna I proclaim that this is now my favorite. THIS IS MY FAVORITE OF THE SERIES!!!
Brock and Selina are two people who need each other desperately and Anna knows exactly how to weave a love story that will keep you reading late into the night.
Anna’s characters are just so flawed and perfect. From the first words, they exchange to the HAE I was enthralled. Brock is now my favorite Highlander. “Cruel beauty. I hoped you’d noticed me, yet now you depress my pretensions.” Delicious chills down my spine!! All you have to do is read the first chapter to be hooked!! I read this book in two hours non-stop.
Talk about hot and steamy!!! Just a warning ladies, once you meet Brock your bookshelf will never be the same!! Wild and untamed in bed and the perfect gentleman out of it. A love story that will bring tears to your eyes and smile to your lips. Do not miss this one!!
Selina Morgan is a stunning beauty, widowed, and betrothed to Cecil Canley-Smythe. He does not know how to appreciate a fine woman like Selina Morgan.
She and her 9 year old son, Gerald will become destitute, if she does not marry Cecil.
Selina is introduced to Lord Brock Bruard. He is the indisreputable rake in the ton. Impossibly handsome, with an aura of magnetism about him. One glance from those dark-green eyes, and you will be lured into his web. He feels Selina’s heart is not with Cecil, regardless of her situation.
He offers Selina an ultimatum to spend a week with him, while Cecil is away on business. Selina’s conversation with Lord Bruard was the most excitement she has had in a long time. She knows his intentions are only carnal thoughts.
But Selina cannot resist this temptation, and decides to take the leap.
I loved all of Anna’s books in the Lairds Most Likely series. This is book 7.
Anna’s masterful writing will have you riveted to this story. These two characters are layered with irresistible traits and emotions that make them come alive on the page.
Wow! What a stellar and sizzling addition is The Highlander’s Forbidden Mistress to this well-liked series I have been reading by Anna Campbell. Ms. Campbell always offers her readers great characters, both primary and secondary, emotional, engaging stories, great dialogue, sometimes a vile character or two, and swoon-worthy and tastefully written “heat.” Well, the last one jumps off the page in this work. It is so relevant to the story of the two main characters, Brock Drummond, Lord Bruard, and Selina Martin. Brock is the epitome of a debauched rake, but a kind one. Selina is widowed with a young son. To protect and provide for her son, she accepts a marriage of convenience betrothal. She attends a house party with her fiancé and meets Brock. Selina is drawn to Brock and he is fascinated by her. Selina has always conducted herself with propriety even though she’d been married and ill-treated by her two-timing husband. She wants some happiness and passion in her life before she enters another dismal marriage, so accepts an invitation from Brock, Lord Bruard, to join him for one week at his isolated hunting lodge. I became enthralled with the relationship that developed between Brock and Selina. The dynamics between them were top-notch. There were some emotional and very touching moments that took place between them as well as easy back and forth bantering so it was natural that they developed a great companionship their week together.
I was gifted a copy of this work by the author which in no way affects my voluntary review. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it.
Rating: 5 stars
Heat level: 4-4 ½ stars.
For all those readers out there who loves heated,, high igniting passion. Just plain all day lustful entanglements in a book? Well, this book isn’t for you. This book gives you a heck of a lot more than what I’ve listed above. I felt like I was on high octane ride while reading.
The sweltering heat, it just swelters off this book. Brock you naughty boy. This man just rev my lower engine. Bring me down Jesus. I want a weeks getaway with a rakish Rogue to sate my—.
Dare I say it? Ah heck, I’ll say it anyway. Sate my quim. Whew Lord. If you are a delicate flower.
Don’t read this book. You might combust! Anna Campbell brought steamy back. The writing is captivating. The drama to the plot gives enough intensity to keep the reader turning the page.
The details gives the reader a visual that gets them lost in the world of Brock and Selina. Widow Selina has lost hope of finding a good husband. She sets out to be married to Cecil. Brock, is having none of it. He sets his site on Selina, day one of the announcement.
His Rakish ways sweeps Selina away to his home away from home. They share a week away that gives them insight to who they are as a couple. Selina emerges with enough courage to face off with Cecil. This face off changes everything for Brock and Selina. I recommend this book with two snaps, and one, put out the do not disturb sign Brock.
Until next time my fellow readers… read on! I voluntary reviewed this ARC after receiving a free gifted copy.
