Fans of Hannah Howell and Diana Gabaldon will love this Scottish romance that combines a “knockout love story with an action-packed plot” (Booklist) as a Highland laird risks his own life to rescue the daughter of his sworn enemy. Famed for his fierceness, Laird Robert Grant is above all a loyal Highland clan chief. But when redcoats capture his rival’’s daughter, he sets aside their feud and … rival’’s daughter, he sets aside their feud and races to her rescue. Aye, Janet Cameron is beautiful, cunning, and so very tempting, but a Cameron lass is the last woman he should ever desire.
Janet refuses to meekly surrender, not even when surrounded by foes. She takes every chance to escape, first from the English soldiers and then from the wickedly handsome Robert. Yet with each day they spend together, his unexpected gallantry chips away at her reserve little by little. As danger and treachery loom, can she trust him enough to choose love over vengeance?

Another Amy Jarecki novel that I absolutely loved. It had my favorite novel ingredients which is true factual history during the Jacobite rising, with a fictional romance, based on true characters of the past. Plus it also had some true royal Scottish historical subjects of the past making appearances in this story. A book I definitely couldn’t book down.
It is a riveting, quick paced, page turner that had me glued to my seat. It was filled with adventure, clan wars, intrigue, theft, treachery, Jacobite rising, betrayal, prejudice, hatred, passion and love. This book can be read as a stand alone book or series order.
In addition it had captivating settings, magnificent dialogue, awe-inspiring main and secondary characters. Plus the detailed plotting was spot on, having readers wondering what could possibly happen next.
You can read this as a stand alone book or in series order but either way I highly recommend The Highland Renegade by Amy Jarecki.

Janet Cameron is in Inverlochy with her brother Kennan for the Samhain celebration, she is hoping that she will meet a man that she can fall in love with and marry, lest her stepmother finds someone for her. She sees Laird Robert Grant, but he is the last man she would ever consider, the Camerons and the Grants have been enemies for generations, but she can’t help but notice how handsome he is. When her friend Mairi tries to play matchmaker, Janet is firm, Robert Grant is a thief and a rake – she would never love a man like him.
Robert has always noticed Janet, she is lovely and if she was anyone other than a Cameron, he would court her. He knows what she thinks of him and it makes him angry, yes, he has a reputation as a ladies man, but he is no thief! He is sure the Camerons are responsible for the theft of his cattle and has words with Kennan. When their mutual friend suggests a duel to settle the matter, Rob agrees.
The duel is underway when Janet arrives to stop it – Rob is clearly winning and is distracted by Janet’s scream, giving her brother a chance to pull a dagger and cut Rob, declaring himself the winner. Before Rob can respond, English soldiers arrive and they scatter, in the confusion, Rob finds Janet and takes her back to town. He insists that she tend his wound, since her brother cheated. She is ashamed of Kennan’s action and agrees. She starts to rethink her opinion of Robert. When he asks for a dance at the Samhain gathering, she agrees. But later when one of the English soldiers, Lt Cummings, is drunk and harasses her, things spiral out of control and she must run for her life.
She and Kennan take off, but are soon captured by Cummings, Kennan is beaten and left for dead and Janet is taken into custody, Cummings is taking her to the fort for punishment. Robert also left, but when he hears her scream, comes back to save her. He finds Kennan and has their friend Ciar take him to safety and goes after Janet. He rescues her from Cummings and they run, with the soldiers on their heels.
Janet is soaked and freezing, but they can’t stop, they escape into the mountains and Robert tends her, in the morning, they learn the soldiers are still following them and Rob makes a decision, they will go further into the wilderness, over a treacherous pass and hopefully lose Cummings. They do lose him, but the cost is high, Janet goes over the edge and Rob fears she is dead. He sends his men on without him and goes to find Janet. She is alive, but her arm is broken and her horse is lame. He prepare to kill her horse, but she begs him not to, the lame horse will slow them down, but he agrees. He knows the storm is too bad to keep moving and Janet needs help, so he finds an abandoned brothy and they ride out the storm. He sets her arm and cares for her, they get to know each other and he is tempted, he knows he should return her to her family, but instead takes her to his home.
Janet is falling for Rob, he is nothing like she imagined, but she knows her father will never let her marry a Grant and there could never be anything between them. But that doesn’t stop them from kissing and wishing for things that can never be. When her father arrives and takes her, Rob can do nothing but watch the woman he loves, ride away.
It will be months before they see each other again and there is still no solution to their problem, but when Rob learns who the real cattle thief is and Janet’s life is in danger, he knows that he will not lose her again.
This book was amazing, it is nonstop action from almost the first page! The chemistry between Janet and Robert is undeniable and my heart broke for them, their love is forbidden and it seems like there is no way they can be together without causing a war. The book is well written, flows nicely, has some steamy-ish love scenes, a bit of angst, a villain bent on revenge, some wonderful secondary characters, some twists and turns, and finally a very hard won HEA. This is the fifth book in the series, but it is loosely connected to the previous stories and can easily be read as a stand alone title. I loved this book and can’t recommend it highly enough!

The Highland Renegade by Amy Jarecki
Lords of the Highlands #5
With the Samhain Festival at hand and two clans blaming one another for the loss of their sheep the situation is tense for the Camerons and Grants. Throw in the English to “keep the peace” and you have a situation rife for trouble and that is just what happens when Lieutenant Cummins becomes a bit to attentive to Janet Cameron and rather than lose face he opts to arrest her for slapping him. Then the chase ensues with Robert Grant coming to her rescue. The trip is not easy for her and she does sustain and injury but as she heals she realizes that what she thought true of Robert is just the opposite. Of course true love is not ever easily achieved so the two have to spend some time apart and find a way to be together which is part and parcel of this story…as is the bad guy getting his comeuppance. Entertaining and fun story that left me wanting to read whatever comes next by this author.
Thank you to NetGalley and Forever Grand for the ARC – This is my honest review.
4-5 Stars
Janet Cameron had thought that the annual Samhain celebrations might prove a good occasion to look if she might find a suitable gentleman to marry, instead of dreading what groom her stepmother might choose for her. The only handsome man, in Janet’s eyes, is her father’s sworn enemy: Laird Robert Grant. But the pleasant outing Janet was enjoying with her friend Mairi soon took a most unexpected turn. Things go from bad to worse when Robert rescues her from a bloodthirsty Englishman.
THE HIGHLAND RENEGADE starts with much action as the red coats are intent on making life difficult for the Highlanders, in addition to the cattle thievery that has plagued the Grant and Cameron clans, and Janet’s brother Kennan is not helping with his temper. However things simmer down for a while, after Robert takes Janet to safety. I loved that Robert rescued Janet out of chivalry and loyalty to Scotland, and not out of lust; that part came later. In spite of a centuries-long feud between their clans, Robert and Janet cannot help being attracted to each other. Although the lust between them is palpable, I never quite got the impression that they were in love, I cannot put my finger on why exactly.
Amy Jarecki’s descriptions of Scotland are breathtaking, and all along I felt as if I were seeing those stunning sites. Which is why I found rather strange that I could never quite get a clear picture of either Janet or Robert; maybe I was having an off-day. I was also baffled at Robert’s age: 14+17=27? As always, Ms. Jarecki’s research is impeccable, thorough and extensive as we witness the precarious political climate in Scotland in 1712-1713. And I do believe the next instalment will feature my two favourite characters in this book, one of them being Robert’s delightful sister Emma.
**4.5 Stars**
…if I had to steal away and ride alone, nothing would prevent me from finding your arms…
Laird Robert Grant knows those bloody Cameron’s have stolen his cattle, and he will stop at nothing to prove their guilt. A life-long feud between the Grant’s and the Cameron’s is all the proof he needs, and not even the beautiful Miss Janet Cameron will change his mind.
Janet Cameron is fiercely loyal to her clan, and even if Laird Grant is one of the most roguishly handsome men she has seen, she will not allow him to disparage her family’s name. But Miss Janet’s beauty and allure has attracted one of the English Dragoon’s, and when she finds herself under attack, she is rescued by the one man she never thought would come to the aid of a Cameron.
On the run from the law and stranded in the wilds of the Highlands during a blizzard, Robert and Janet find themselves drawn towards each other and come under the realization that true love is found in the most unlikely of places…
Amy Jarecki has written a page turning historical romance this reader could not put down and did not want to end! Highly recommend!
*Received ARC via NetGalley for honest review*
Laird Robert Grant has had his eye on Janet Cameron, daughter of a highland laird, for a while even though the 2 clans are sworn enemies. When she travels to a nearby town with her brother, Kennan, to celebrate the festival of Samhain, Robert hopes to get to know her better. Unfortunately, due to a series of unfortunate events, Robert ends up rescuing Janet from the clutches of British soldiers and they head to the mountains to lose them.
I enjoyed this story, but I thought Janet was a bit obnoxious in the beginning of the story. Her disdain for Robert was enforced by the opinions of her father and brother. All that changes when due to an accident while fleeing the British, she is forced to recover at Robert’s home. I liked Janet’s kindness to Robert’s sister Emma and slowly she begins to see for herself that Robert is a kind and caring laird. Their attraction for each other grows even though Robert knows Janet’s father will never give his permission for Robert to marry Janet. The story dragged a bit getting to the conclusion and I did skip a number of pages to reach the end. Fans of Scottish history and romance will enjoy this story.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
3.5 stars! This was an exciting, fast-paced, entertaining read that had me rooting for Janet and Robert to get to their HEA. I really enjoyed it!
Good read
Janet Cameron, daughter of a highland laird, has traveled to a nearby town with her brother, Kennan, to celebrate the festival of Samhain, where many other clans, and British soldiers, are as well. Laird Robert Grant is also in town for the festival and promptly accuses Janet’s brother of having Cameron men steal Grant cattle. Though someone has stolen from the Camerons as well, there is a long-standing feud between the two clans that leads to a duel between Kennan and Robert. (Kennan began to annoy me from here with his immature, blustery behavior and his refusal to own up to his own errors, but maybe we’ll some more development from him in future books).
When drunken revelry at the festival ends in Janet’s arrest by some nasty British dragoons, Robert finds himself going after Janet, even though he knows this is none of his business and he should just head for the hills. Janet’s hatred and mistrust of Robert and his entire clan has been ingrained in her since birth, but she has little choice but to trust him, especially since they’ve both made a determined enemy in the English lieutenant. With the onset of a blizzard and a fall that injures Janet, Robert opts to get them to his home and keep her safe from the English until she’s healed enough to travel to her own home. This angers Janet, who, despite the obvious connection between them, is determined to dislike Robert and maintain the mistrust between their clans simply because the feud between them has lasted for generations. Robert understands the risks of getting involved with Janet and does his best to keep himself apart from her, but he feels desperately drawn to her. Will he be able to convince her to accept him and make peace with her clan?
This is much improved from other, earlier works I’ve read from this author. Although Janet did really get on my nerves, I liked Robert a great deal as a good example of a flawed hero who demonstrates character development. This one has made me want to start reading this author again.
I received a complimentary ARC via NetGalley. Thank you! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This story was hard to put down. With the danger, the humor, and the love, I just wanted to find out what was next. Robert was protective from the beginning, and he was willing to change the situation so that he could have what he wanted, Janet. She also changed her perspective as she got to know Robert and realized not all was as it seems, in more ways than one. Emma and Ciar were wonderful secondary characters, and I would love to know more about them. I highly recommend this book.
I received a copy of this book through Netgalley, and this is my unsolicited review.
Holy Snapdragons!! Can a story get any better than this one? Hard to do when there is a braw, fierce, handsome, highland warrior, one Robert Grant, Laird of Clan Grant, who is everything one would want (well I mean the ladies, umm yes he is something!). Janet Cameron has traveled with her brother to attend the Samain celebration and hopes to find a husband among those present. Of course her friend pushes her toward Robert, but the Grants and Camerons have a long feud and recent developments have then at odds again. Janet is very strong willed and refuses to be linked to Robert, but fate has a hand it seems when they are drawn together.
English Redcoats are in the area, supposedly keeping the peace in Scotland. But the leader has his eye on Janet and pursues her. When it becomes evident the man will not leave her alone and intends to arrest her, Robert steps in to protect her. One thing leads to another and the adventure or rather harrowing experiences begin. Robert vows to himself, “Janet Cameron would be safe on his watch. Nary a soul will touch her. I swear it.”
On a journey for their lives, through a winter storm, riding in land that is difficult, even in good weather and a gut wrenching fall, the enemy continues their pursuit. Janet is so strong and determined to survive and Robert seems hard, but deep down he has a lot of feelings. They are strongly aware of each other and the emotions were off the charts!
I truly loved these two and Amy has brought them to life. I can feel the cold and angst with her amazing descriptions and wonderful words. This is one of my favorite books I have read this year but is seems every story written in this series is outstanding!! Cannot wait for the next book!!
The Highland Renegade by Amy Jarecki is book 5 in the Lords of the Highlands Series. This is the story of Laird Robert Grant and Janet Cameron. I have read the previous books, but I feel this can be a standalone book.
Robert has always been drawn to Janet but she is is revivals daughter so she is of course not for him. But when she is taken, he goes forward to help get her back. Janet works to escape her captors but when she is saved by Robert she still works to escape. Janet knows she should fight her attraction to Robert but the more time they are together them more neither can easily walk away.
Loved it!
As most of you know, Historical Romances are not my typical reads. I’m not going to lie to you, it did take me a little bit to really get into this one. However, once I did, I was totally hooked. I couldn’t help but fall in love with Robert and Janet. Their story captivated and intrigued me. I love a good forbidden romance, so I was excited to see the outcome of this story. You see, Janet is the daughter of Robert’s sworn enemy. When Janet gets captured, Robert puts aside their familiar differences and rushes to her rescue. Janet is everything that Robert wants in a woman, but can’t have…..Janet herself is a force to be reckoned with. She’s not just going to roll over and surrender. She tries to escape every chance she gets. It’s Robert that throws a wrench into her plans. She knows she should get far away from him, but the more time these two are together, the more she sees the good in Robert. With danger and betrayal afoot, will Janet be able to trust the one man she wants, but shouldn’t have? There’s only one way to find out..
Overall, I had a really great time reading this story. I loved the history, the language and getting to learn about the highlanders. This story was really well written and entertaining. You can tell that a lot of thought and research went into it. I loved that The Highlander Renegade was written in a way that you can easily follow without having to read the prior books first. And, as I previously stated, I enjoy a good forbidden romance and couldn’t get over just how perfectly matched Robert and Janet were. Those two definitely kept me on my toes.
At the end of the day, The Highland Renegade was just a fun book to get lost and swept away in. From great characters to action and romance. To steamy good times, danger and not knowing who to really trust; this book hit all the marks for me. I’m still pretty new to the historical romance genre, but I found this one to be a great one to dive into. Amy Jarecki is a totally new author to me and after reading this book, I’m excited to check out more of this author’s work.
Laird Robert Grant may find Janet Cameron beautiful but their families are sworn enemies. When Janet’s is attacked by the redcoats Robert hears her screams and comes to her rescue. Promising to take her home they travel through the Highlands to escape the redcoats that are chasing them. During their escape Janet falls and breaks her arm and has to stay at the Grants while she heals. Robert and Janet come to know and care for each other but can’t seem to overcome that they are sworn enemies and the obstacles that they face. What a wonderful story this is. I loved both characters, Janet is feisty and a spitfire, Robert is stubborn and sexy Highlander. I have loved Amy’s other books and I love this one! Amy has done it again 5 stars!
Damned if you do and damned if you don’t. Laird Grant is in an untenable predicament. His clan has been fighting with the Cameron’s for so long it is hard to remember just how the debauchery of whose wife happened. Equally, it is easy for Grant to accuse the Cameron’s of thieving his yearlings. They’ve been thieving back and forth each other’s stock like an itch of a mosquito bite, where it is second nature to ‘scratch’. This time it is extreme – 66 yearlings just gone. Who could have done it if not the Cameron’s for it would take a large group to organize this?
When Grant is forced to protect the lovely Janet Cameron from the queen’s dragoon he does it because it’s the right thing to do—not for any other reason…maybe.
Janet’s brother Kennan follows much as his father has in the feud. It is what he learned as a child and as grown up he doesn’t believe they are trust worthy. He shows his dislike to Grant, yet Grant again, shows he’s made of better stuff. As a reader, I took Grant’s side, hands down.
Bad goes further south when Lieutenant Cummins takes notice, one too many times, to Janet. This finds Janet and Grant both running to stay away from the English prison. The pursuit is on, the journey is terrifying and edifying.
Janet’s mindset is shifting. She is starting to see Grant is more than the feuding enemy of her father. She sees a kind brother, fair laird who is loved by his people. Passion ends up sizzling underneath the surface. Each know what they feel can’t go further, because feuding clans have no tolerance for each other.
Grant’s life is on the line and so is Janet’s. Can there be a coming together of the clans to protect their own from the English? Will their own personal relationship win the day? Can each clan support is new paradigm?
A note about Janet: I loved this character. She is everything I would like to be if I were in her place. She’s strong-willed, even-tempered with a just and fair spirit, all wrapped in feisty temperament!
Author Jarecki has again created another tale in Lords of the Highlands which will entertain you with dangerous suspenseful scenes in one moment, emotional passionate scenes or tender moments in another. Her character development and ARC is spot-on. She is an author I can safely say you will enjoy.
Ach, just when I thought Amy Jarecki had written her best ever story with The Highland Chieftain (and my Amy Jarecki forever boyfriend is Dunn MacRae) she releases The Highland Renegade!
Caught between his animosity for the Cameron family and his sense of Highland chivalry Robert Grant rescues the daughter of his nemesis.
Strong willed Janet Cameron is no meek miss and refuses to give into surrendering to her enemies – whether they be English redcoats or the sinfully handsome Laird of her family’s rival.
When it becomes apparent it’s a decision of English justice or escape with the enemy they both decide on the latter. What follows next is a nail-biting journey over treacherous country and weather with the common enemy in hot pursuit.
I loved these two out-spoken, hot headed characters! Janet has a strength that carries her through circumstances that would make an English rose wilt. And Robert, our dear hero may be gruff, demanding, and opinionated but he may not be as gruff as he seems.
I would say that The Highland Renegade is now my favorite Amy Jarecki book and Robert my favorite book boyfriend but I have a feeling I would have to eat my words. So….. for now this tale is at the top of my Amy Jarecki favorites list and Robert is number one on the forever book boyfriend list.
I can’t wait to see who Ms. Jarecki brings us next!
This is a new twist on the Romeo & Juliet story, highlander style. Robert Grant is Laird of the Grant Clan. Janet Cameron is the daughter of Laird Ewen Cameron, neighbors of Grant that they have feuded with for generations. One of the lairds violated one of the other’s female and it’s never been forgotten. They raid each other’s cattle and distrust each other on sight. Unfortunately Robert and Janet have been eyeing each others for years, drawn to forbidden fruit. At a Samhain gathering Janet is a popular dance partner and English Lieutenant Winfred Cummins is drunk and wants his turn. He refuses to take no for an answer and chaos ensues. Everyone scatters since Scotland is under English “protection” to ensure loyalty to the English Queen Anne. Janet escapes with her brother Kennan and they race home with Cummins and his troops close behind. Robert and his men are off towards home when he hears Janet scream and he races to her rescue saving Kennan’s life while he’s at it. They still have to hide from Cummins and so starts the adventure.
I really liked both of these characters. Robert is honorable, resourceful and a good Laird to his clan and family. His blind sister Emma almost stole the book. Amy’s sensitivity to her infirmity is well written. I kinda hope she and Kennan end up together. Janet tries so hard not to fall for Robert but it’s just not possible as they end up spending so much alone time together depending on each other to survive. Cummins is a delightful villain inhabiting all the worst in the English soldiers and dogged determination to find Janet. We meet old friends at the Duke of Gordon’s ball too as well as the disguised displaced Scottish King. I enjoy Amy’s rich character driven highland adventures that are so full of action and passion. Thank you Amy and Forever for the opportunity to review this story.
This scintillatingly sexy, sensuously romantic, and excitingly bold adventure is my favorite of the series so far! It is fast-paced, well-written and populated with likable and memorable characters. The hero and heroine are my favorite characters – of course – but I also really liked the hero’s sister, Emma and his best friend Ciar. I think they will be the featured couple in the next book – and I can’t wait to see that.
Laird Robert Grant and Miss Janet Cameron have been more than a little aware of each other for a long time, but neither of them would ever admit it. They’d vehemently deny it – and they would honestly believe it. They’ve covertly watched each other across fields and ballrooms for a very long time, but any relationship between them is totally forbidden. The Grants and the Camerons have been feuding for seven generations and the current leaders of the clans aren’t about to end the feud now.
It is a very dangerous time in Scotland and all of the inhabitants have to be constantly on their guard. Queen Anne sits on the throne of England and has dispatched red-coated soldiers all over Scotland to ‘keep the peace’ and to look for signs of anyone who supports the Stuart line for succession to the throne. The Jacobite cause is widely supported among the Highlanders and they are particularly vulnerable to the English Soldiers retaliations for any small infractions – real or imagined. The author did an outstanding job of making you feel that tension in the air – it surrounded everything and was so thick you could cut it with a knife. Excellent mood setting Ms. Jarecki.
Janet has traveled from Achnacarry to Inverlochy with her brother Kennan with the stated purpose of attending the Samhain Gathering and doing some shopping. Her real purpose is to look over all of the eligible men in hopes of finding a candidate for a husband – one she can love. Her father has recently remarried, though he is in his sixties, and Janet’s new step-mother wants to marry Janet off. Janet knows that if she can’t find someone herself, her step-mother will be more than happy to choose someone for her. Unfortunately for Janet, she attracts the attention of the Englishman, Lieutenant Winfred Cummins, charged with ‘keeping the peace’ during what he calls ‘an uncivilized pagan gathering’. That will not end well.
The excitement begins on the first page and doesn’t let up until the very end. After a confrontation with Lieutenant Cummins, Janet witnesses a confrontation between her brother and Laird Grant. Laird Grant is accusing her clan of stealing cattle from him. How dare he! Why, the Camerons have also had cattle stolen – maybe the Grants stole them. The animosity continues until finally, Ciar manages to convince both Robert and Kennan to battle each other – one-on-one – to end the feud. That goes well until Kennan cheats.
Later, after Janet has another confrontation with Lieutenant Cummins, he arrests her and proceeds to take her to Ft. Williams. Robert rescues her and they head off into the worst blizzard anyone has ever seen – with the Red Coats in hot pursuit. Janet is badly injured during the chase and Robert has to nurse her.
It was lovely to see these two people find their HEA. They were both such admirable people. Janet was loyal, level-headed, sensible and very caring while Robert was a tad impetuous as well as loyal, and caring. Janet was smart enough that she didn’t keep trying to escape from Robert – that would have just made her a TSTL heroine because she could never have survived in that environment on her own. Then, when confronted by her father, both she and Robert did the sensible thing rather than risk an open war between the clans. I did get a little aggravated with Janet when she just followed what her father and step-mother wanted rather than trying to reach Robert, but I sort of understand – you know – again – open war. So, I was very pleased to watch them slowly overcome the obstacles in their path and find their HEA.
I definitely recommend this book.
