He wants a lady, not a temptation… frontier is nothing like home…
Josefa expects to find adventure and a long-awaited family to call her own when she agrees to marry Alejandro. But Alta California is shockingly unrefined—no society, no watercolors, no books. At least her husband is the perfect gentleman… and utterly distant and unapproachable, in and out of the bedroom. Josefa refuses to settle for anything less than the passionate union of her dreams, and she’ll do whatever it takes to set her husband’s heart free.
But secrets and danger lurk, threatening to tear their newly formed bonds apart. Will they cling to their safe illusions about what love should be or dare to seize a future beyond their wildest imaginings?

It was during a time that Church ruled areas in the old west with the military, and there was a great deal of political unrest in Mexico with Mexico reaching up into what was now California. Alejandro Vasquez was originally from Mexico City but had been given land around Alta, California due to his father’s military record. Alejandro wanted a true lady for a wife so he sent for one in Mexico City. Josefa soon came to marry him. After, she arrived she was not sure what she had gotten herself into, but she was determined to make the best of the situation. It was her determination and willingness to learn that won Ale over first. A real eye opener to how under handed some of the priest could be and how the military enlisted men could run a muck. I would have liked to know where Alejandro’s ideas of how a gentleman act came from? He had no one to teach him in the bedroom which caused him the most trouble. A wonderful story of the old west in early settlement of California with a young man seeking to marry, settle down, raising a family for the future.

Alejandro Vasquez wants to marry a lady so the claim to his land will be undisputed in Alta California. The early days in the California frontier are a fascinating setting for this book, and I loved the characters! The suspense of danger and secrets will keep you on edge until the end!

The second book in the Los Caballeros series a well written story that kept me turning pages. Josefa Avila Perez and Alejandro Vasquez’s story. I had to see what Ale was wearing at the end so I went on line to look, once I saw I had to laugh. I enjoyed reading this story and seeing how they find love. This is the 1st book I’ve read written by Genevieve Turner; she has done a great job at writing a good book; I can’t wait to read more of her books.
The story line caught my attention at the very beginning and kept me interested throughout the entire book.
I loved the chemistry between the characters.

Alejandra has settled in Alto California and now that he is settled he sends to Mexico City for a bride. He never expected the beautiful Josefa and finds it hard to keep his distance but he has work to do. Loved this story with the look into how the new frontier was settled and the romance was the added spice to the story. She wanted romance and love and it seems like she was not going to get that from him until he fell head over heels for her. There were some twists in this story but all was worked out with everyone happy in the end.

The Hidalgo’s Wife by Genevieve Turner
Los Caballeros #2
Josefa Avila Perez has done her duty as requested by her father and also as strongly recommended by her mother and as a result finds herself far from Mexico City ready to marry a man she has never seen before in a land that is really a frontier. Alejandro Vasquez Duarte is the man who will be her husband. He is a wealthy, honorable, educated, landowner who has high aspirations that he knows Josefa will help him achieve. Little do the two realize when they enter the marriage that many of their preconceived ideas will be incorrect and that to forge a true and wondrous marriage will take effort for both of them.
In 1819 San Diego, Alta California, New Spain the topography may be as I remember it when I last visited BUT it was also much different. A tug of war was going on between church and state in a land that both had moved into while subjugating the native population.
What I liked:
* Josefa: I admired her courage, wisdom and willingness to make the best of the situation
* Alejandro: a good man who puts those he cares about first. He took a bit of time to get to know but I really liked him.
* Hector: Alejandro’s brother: fired up by his beliefs and eager to set the world’s wrongs right. I am hoping his story will be next up in the series
* The writing, plot and characters
* The setting
* The historical information about California, neophytes and all the rest
* The way Josefa adapted, found creative outlets and created her own place in her new home
* The incident with the bear
* Everything except
What I did not like:
* Being reminded of the mentality and actions of those who occupy lands not their own
* The plight of women in the past
* Having the book end and having to say goodbye to such wonderful characters
Did I enjoy this book? Definitely
Would I read more in this series? Without a doubt
Thank you to the author for the ARC – This is my honest review.
