Come back to Thunder Point! From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Virgin River series, book 3 in her beloved Thunder Point novels, where falling in love can be the bravest act of all. In a moment of desperation, Devon McAllister takes her daughter and flees a place where they should have been safe and secure. She has no idea what is around the next bend, but she is pretty certain … pretty certain it can’t be worse than what they’ve left behind. Her plan is to escape to somewhere she can be invisible. Instead, an unexpected offer of assistance leads her to Thunder Point, a tiny Oregon town with a willingness to help someone in need.
As the widowed father of a vulnerable young boy, Spencer Lawson knows something about needing friendship. But he’s not looking for anything else. Instead, he’s thrown his energy into his new role as Thunder Point’s high school football coach. Tough and demanding to his team, off the field he’s gentle and kind…just the kind of man who could heal Devon’s wounded heart.
Devon thought she wanted to hide from the world. But in Thunder Point, you find bravery where you least expect it…and sometimes, you find a hero.

As I was reviewing my NetGalley account, I realized that this book had not yet been reviewed. I read it back when the book was released in 2013, but was having trouble putting my thoughts down. Nearly four years later, the only thing that really stuck with me about this book was that there was this commune / cult that was a big part of the story. And I really didn’t like that.
I’ve been a fan of Robyn Carr for a while now. I love her Virgin River series and have re-read most of those books. But there’s something off about Thunder Point.. It’s almost a cheap rip off of Virgin River. The characters haven’t pulled me in. I can’t seem to care about the town and the inhabitants. Which makes it hard to continue this series.
That said, let’s actually talk about The Hero . The characters aren’t memorable. In fact, before doing a quick re-read of the book to write the review, I couldn’t remember anything about them. And re-reading the story, didn’t make my impressions any better. Devon is a pretty weak character. A lot of it comes from her history with the commune. But you’d think that if she had enough backbone to “run away”… but alas, I just couldn’t seem to really relate or well, care. Then there’s Spencer. Too good to be true, but didn’t seem to really get the airtime that you’d expect from the hero of the book. And again, probably why I didn’t connect and remember.
I have serious mixed feelings on the whole commune / cult plot. I think it really could have worked, but in the end, it left a bad taste in my mouth. The twist at the end helped, but I can’t believe that those living in the commune would have been so oblivious.
All in all, this one just didn’t work for me when I originally read it and still doesn’t work for me now. I’m not sure if I’ll continue this series or not after this lackluster installment.
My review originally posted at Romancing the Book.
I’d recommend this entire series. Carr builds wonderful worlds in her small town series, full of characters you’d love to know in real life.
This author always delivers a really good story around excellent realistic characters…..the “HEA” is always pretty realistic within life’s unpredictability….can be read alone but always like the common setting in a community that is tied together…
Great book
My subjective review: Enjoyed the story. The characters are wonderful and easy to fall in love with. There are a couple of expressions that are used frequently that could use a change, but other than that, a good solid, entertaining read.
This series is one of my favorites
Every book book in this series is amazing, as with the Virgin River series. I can’t get enough of Thunder Point!
I’m just waiting for the next book to become available in my library
OMG! This book… My stomach was in knots, my heart pounding and tears fell a few times. The crap that poor Devon had to go through and her little girl too. But then she stumbled into Thunder Point. I love how the town rallies for each other even though they don’t know them all that well. Each book gets better and better. Can’t wait for the next….
