A saintly hermit’s arrival at the abbey coincides with a young heir’s disappearance, in the Silver Dagger Award-winning medieval mystery series. The year is 1142, and England is in the grip of civil war. Within the cloisters of the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, there begins a chain of events no less momentous than the upheavals of the outside world. It starts with the sad … It starts with the sad demise of Richard Ludel, Lord of Eyton, whose ten-year-old son and heir, also named Richard, is a pupil at the abbey. The boy refuses to surrender his newly inherited powers to Dionysia, his furious, formidable grandmother. A stranger to the region is the hermit Cuthred, who enjoys the protection of Lady Dionysia, and whose young companion, Hyacinth, befriends Richard. Despite his reputation for holiness, Cuthred’s arrival heralds a series of mishaps for the monks. When a corpse is found in Eyton forest, Brother Cadfael must devote his knowledge of human nature to tracking down a ruthless murderer.

I enjoy the insights into the Middle Ages that this series gives.
I enjoy books set in this time period and the Brother Cadfael books are always entertaining.
Another decent book in the Cafael mystery series. Not as good as some of the other books in the series but entertaining enough for a quick read. Ellis Peters continues development of the mid-evil world of Brother Cadfael so readers can feel they know more about Cadfael’s world.
Enjoyed the whole series.
I love all the Cadfal books! Got the cd’s!
I love this series as Brother Cadfael is such a wise and capable character. I enjoy getting this feel for life in England in the 1100s. The author has done her research to make these books feel true and real.
Love Cadfael!
I loved all of the Brother Cadfael books.
Trynit out!
I love Cadfael. This had a nice extra twist to the story.
Good mystery book makes you try to guess the guilty as you go
Always a nice journey with Brother Cadfael.
This author and Rosemary Sutcliff live and breathe their selected timeperiods.
LOVE Brother Cadfael…and the 12th Century setting.
I love the mix of history and mystery! Ellis Peters is a favorite!
This was an entertaining read, but not an easy read if you’re not used to the style of writing – sort of “Old English/ Shakespeare” style of writing. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had read previous books in this series. Fun read overall, but you need to enjoy historical period pieces.
Brother Cadfael seldom disappoints. Another fine story.
A good who dunit
The Cadfael books are always a treat.
Brother Cadfael is a most lovable character and always solves the mystery. Fun reading!!!
