I found this gem at the Dollar Tree! I loved the first four books in the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series, (I have yet to read Sisterhood Everlasting,) so I was pretty sure I would enjoy this book by the same author. Upon reading the back of the book, I realized it was kind of a dystopian type book, which I also love, but wasn’t expecting from this author. As I began to read, I realized it was also a bit of Sci-Fi with some Time Travel going on.
The characters in the book must determine what incidents need changed and how much to change in order to help the future instead of hurting it more. This is a theme that keeps coming back to me, about how one event can cause a huge impact on the future. The thing is, while it would be nice to change somethings in our pasts that maybe weren’t so pleasant, we don’t know what that would do to our current lives and would we be willing to risk what we have now to change what happened then?
The dystopian aspect comes in with the “Rules” that all the travelers are supposed to follow. If you don’t follow the rules, horrible consequences are doled out. The leaders in charge are surely totalitarian and since they’ve formed their own kind of government, that creates a dystopian world for those who came back in time.
I recommend this book for people who love Ann Brashares, those who enjoy dystopian, and/or those who enjoy time travel fiction.
Time travel has never really been my thing, but this book managed to grab me. Ethan knows Prenna is different, he was there when she appeared in his time. However he can’t seem to get her to talk to him.
Prenna has rules she has to follow or she will be punished, and if you go too far you can end up permanently gone. She has been falling for Ethan since she started school, she doesn’t know why but she can’t seem to let it go.
A homeless man, a key and a letter all work to start Prenna questioning everything the leaders of her community were doing. Especially when it comes to the rules.
A fast-paced and intriguing, with a scary peek into the future. As Ethan and Prenna work to find the thing that caused her time to be so bleak and fix it. They also find love.
I laughed, cried and held my breath as this story unfolded. A truly enjoyable YA read.
Okay, I have to admit here that I have not read any of the books in the popular Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series and this is the first book by Ann Brashares that I have read. What a wonderful story to introduce me to a new author. I’m so glad I discovered this one and I look forward to reading more.
The Here and Now is an exciting story where Prenna and Ethan work together to find out what is the truth and what are the lies. Coming from another time, Prenna has ‘rules’ to live by, but are these rules in place to keep her safe or to hide the secrets of others? This is definitely a page turner, as together they face a scary present that may or not affect the uncertain future.
