In this sweet Regency romance, Amelia Barret will risk everything to keep her word–even to the point of proposing to a sea captain she’s never met. Amelia Barrett, heiress to an estate nestled in the English moors, defies family expectations and promises to raise her dying friend’s baby. But she knows she can’t do it alone and finds herself in the surprising position of asking Graham, the … Graham, the child’s father–a man she’s never met before–to marry her.
When the baby vanishes with little more than an ominous ransom note hinting at her whereabouts, Amelia and Graham are driven to test the boundaries of their love for this little one.
Amelia’s detailed plans would normally see her through any trial, but now, desperate and shaken, she’s forced to examine her soul and face her one weakness: pride.
Graham’s strength and self-control have served him well and earned him much respect, but chasing perfection has kept him a prisoner of his own discipline. And away from the family he has sworn to love and protect.
To save the child they’ve both come to love–and any hopes of preserving their fledgling love–both must learn to relinquish control so they can embrace the future ahead of them.

I had the privilege of being one of Sarah’s critique partners as she brought this debut book out on proposal. A lovely sweet story!
Very enjoyable. I liked the plot and the characters. It does have some scriptural references and talk of God and but nothing so deep that it takes over the whole book.
I listened to this book and thought the narrator did a great job.
I will be getting the next book in the series.
Definitely a page-turner! Very well written. The characters and story become so real. Perfectly paced as the plot unfolds and the characters draw you into their story bit by bit. I am usually such a slow reader, but couldn’t put it down. Definitely recommend.
I really enjoyed this book. You never knew who the bad guys were. It had lots of action and romance. I read in one day.
The Heiress of Winterwood is an enchanting debut novel. It has a slow start, but once the action starts, everything comes together beautifully. Amelia and Graham really began to click for me as they came together to save Lucy.

Loved this book!!
I enjoy reading this author’s books… I think I’ve read all of them …. good to relax in comfortable chair and just escape for awhile 🙂
Sweet, clean and believable?
So most of the time when a lady proposes to a gentleman, I wave the historical incongruity penalty flag. But I thought this one felt really plausible because if I was forced into an engagement with Edward the Scumbag I would be scrambling for a way out too! Graham Stirling is a winner, and I have high hopes that his brother will get his act together in the next book! This was a lovely historical romance! And the perk of waiting to read a series after all the books are out is that I don’t have to wait! On to book two!!!
Graham and Amelia, two very resourceful, independent people who found themselves fighting for Lucy, a very sweet little girl. The story line was very moving and kept me reading till the end. The ending needed a little more, I kept wondering what happened to Graham, does he stay with Amelia or does he go back to his ship.
Sarah Ladd’s historical romantic suspense is definitely worth the read. From the beginning, I was drawn in and invested in these memorable characters. The idea that Amelia, the heroine, would go against society’s unwritten rules and her family to demonstrate such kindness to a child paints a beautiful picture of sacrificial love. As Amelia chooses to love, she is surrounded by a small community who supports her. What a great example for our world today. As the mystery unfolds, Amelia learns lessons about herself and her faith. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough and I didn’t want this story to end. The Heiress of Winterwood is a good choice for book club discussion. It is also a great gift idea for young adult readers. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher. All opinions in this review are my own.
