Northumberland, 1809: A beautiful young heiress disappears from her locked bedchamber at Linn Hagh. The local constables are baffled and the townsfolk cry ‘witchcraft’.The heiress’s uncle summons help from Detective Lavender and his assistant, Constable Woods, who face one of their most challenging cases: The servants and local gypsies aren’t talking; Helen’s siblings are uncooperative; and the … uncooperative; and the sullen local farmers are about to take the law into their own hands.
Lavender and Woods find themselves trapped in the middle of a simmering feud as they uncover a world of family secrets, intrigue and deception in their search for the missing heiress.
Taut, wry and delightful, The Heiress of Linn Hagh is a rollicking tale featuring Lavender and Woods—a double act worthy of Holmes and Watson.
Revised edition: This edition of The Heiress of Linn Hagh includes editorial revisions.

This tale of a very dysfunctional family will keep you intrigued as the two detectives attempt to discover what happened to the missing heiress–and to figure out how she escaped from a locked room!! Both her parents have died and her step brother, who is now head of the family is absolutely the cruelest human being you would ever want to meet–her step sister is no better!
Although there is violence the two detectives take everything one step at a time–and does remind me of Watson and Holmes! A very well written book that will keep you guessing and guessing and guessing some more!
This was a “new to me” author, and now I am very glad I have bought the rest of the series. The main characters were very believable, fun at times, and became endearing quickly. The plot is easily followed and I am very much looking forward to the next book in the series. I definitely and highly recommend this book.
This book has been in my kindle library for ages & I wish I had got to it sooner. A well-crafted novel with interesting, believable characters and a credible plot this is an excellent example of a historical mystery. I loved the Northumberland setting, and the period details were accurate and well-researched. On to the next.
Good Regency mystery with believable characters and a conclusion not easily guessed.
Has the best of Agatha Christie and Sir Auther Conan Doyle combined
I liked this book. It was easy to get caught up in.
I really love this series, and I wish there were more books. YOU NEVER KNOW WHATS COMING, but it’s always interesting. It’s very well written.
Loved this book. I did have some of the mystery figured out but not all. It was a great read with great characters
It is a really good series! Ive read both the Heiress of Linn Hagh and The Sans Pareil Mystery, and I just love how the author uses her writing style to captivate the reader, well it totally did it for me! Detective Lavender and Constable Woods are just like Sherlock and Watson, If ya know what I mean! So totally recomend it if you love mystery/detectives.
This is the first book of this author I ever read. It was a very interesting story with an unpredictable twist. I will look forward for the second book.
Series starter for the wonderful historical mystery series, Detective Lavender!
In the early 1800’s Detective Lavendar and Constable Woods investigate a missing heiress in Northumberland. A tale full of mystery, interesting characters, and hidden family secrets.
The relationship between the Constable and Detective is written in sort of a Holmes/Watson style.
I like the old English mysteries. This is the first book in a three book series.
Very entertaining.
Excellent book. I love the characters and am hoping there is a sequel. This book has been on my Kindle for a while. I should have read it a long time ago. Now I want to read more about Detective Lavender.
I agree with other reviews — what on earth was the detective’s sex-obsession about? It was so totally out of place with the rest of the story. I assume it was just stuck in there to “hook” readers, but really? That’s not why I read gothics.
Other than that, it was fine. Pretty clear who was up to what. I never got especially involved, but I did finish it, so that’s a plus. I’d rate it as a good-enough read, but nothing exceptional.
The entire Detective Lavender series is terrific.
I avoided this series for several months thinking the stories would be unoriginal. I was wrong! I thoroughly enjoyed the characters of inspector lavender and constable woods. Their friendship seemed real and not forced. Each had his strengths and knew how to best use them. I will look for the other books in the series.
Great book. It was original, interesting and kept me guessing till the end.
I was pleasantly surprised by the twists in the plot. Although it was not truly a whodunnit, there were many unknowns which kept me interested. It is the first of the series and I will surely read more installments. Interesting as well as like able characters
