He finally has the chance to clear his family name. The only thing standing in his way is his tempting new wife. Known as the King Maker, Ada MacQuerrie yearns to wed for love and not the magical gift she possesses. But her ruthless stepbrother doesn’t care what she wants; he just needs her to marry one of his treacherous allies. When an attempt to escape his control and save those she loves … control and save those she loves goes awry, Ada is forced to choose a husband from the miscreants who’ve come to align themselves with him. All seems lost until a compelling latecomer displays unexpected honor. But is the mysterious Highlander another treasonous Scot simply trying to seduce and manipulate her, or is the man they call Wolf the ally she’s been hoping for?
William MacLean has spent years shouldering the shame of his father’s and brother’s alleged treason against the king. So when the chance to exonerate his family presents itself, he willingly woos an unwanted bride who has the power to topple his enemies. A seemingly simple plan. Except William has survived by keeping others at a distance, and his new wife is not the calculating enemy he expected but a bold, brave beauty he fears could become his greatest weakness.
When passion flares between them, Ada cannot suppress the hope that her dreams could come true. Yet the closer she tries to get to William, the more he withdraws. It’s not until justice is within his grasp and his enemies take Ada from him that he realizes the demons dwelling within him can only be conquered by the light his wife offers. But is it too late to surrender his heart to the woman who already holds it?

This maybe Julie Johnstone’s best book yet!! The Heart of a Highlander is book 10 in the Highlander Vows: Entangled Hearts series and boy oh boy what an amazing series this is but you can read this particular book or any in this series as a standalone so not to worry. Julie’s writing keeps getting better and better and her stories are just so original. You will read nothing like it and it hits on every emotion… I love it. You fall in love with the hero and heroine and just hate the evils one. I couldn’t put it down. This has so much in it that I know my list could go on and on but here is just a few thing to expect: fights, abandonment, an arranged marriage, greed, two fairies gifts, not wanting to fall in love, an evil stepbrother, imprisonment, torture, spies, missions for the king, two wonderful dogs that seem to understand everything that is being said to them and yes love. You have to read this book… trust me… you won’t be disappointed.
***This book was gifted to me and I am voluntarily reviewing.
William (Wolf) MacLean is tasked with wedding Ada MacQuerrie, the woman who was blessed by the Fae with beauty and being a King Maker. William is loyal to King David, the Scottish King and must pretend to betray his sovereign to be allowed a chance to win Ada’s hand in marriage. Ada’s step-brother Brothwell is the bastard son of and loyal to the Steward who wants to unseat the King. William guards his heart so he can never get hurt again after his Mom left him as a child. Ada believes men only care about her gift. The whole story of the bumbling fae Hortense and Portense bestowing Ada’s gift at her christening and how they watched over her until the her story and William’s has a happy ending with some surprises! I couldn’t put it down and was smiling at the wonderful ending!
I loved the story of Ada and William! They fought their sizzling attraction at every turn and rebelled against their feelings for each other making this book impossible to put down! Among enemies, intrigue, and magic both Ada and William will navigate through a journey of discovery and love. Happy reading!
Truly I loved and enjoyed reading this wonderful and captivating tale of romance, honor and betrayal set in the Highlands of Scotland. The skillful development of the characters create an intriguing and page-turning plot that has the reader eagerly continuing on the journey to a pleasurable reading experience. To sum it up, I love this book and will certainly go back to read it again.
Such a great book! I loved the characters including the dogs and there was plenty of action and adventure. There was truly never a dull moment. Excellent entertainment!
I devoured this book! Hard to put down, this romance has it all! There’s a bit of magic with the gifts of the fae, historical events, swashbuckling heroics and a delicious romance. I love conflicted heroes and the women that break through their barriers and William was a tough nut to crack! Another good book in the series, but it isn’t necessary to hard read the other books to enjoy this one.
I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!!
I didn’t want it to end! I love this entire series. Julie Johnstone is a truly gifted storyteller.
William had trust issues and he was afraid to open his heart to love.
Ada loved him deeply and showed him that his heart was safe with her.
I highly recommend this book. It is a wonderful story. In fact, the entire series is great!
I was given a free copy of The Heart of a Highlander for my honest review.
Buy, read, enjoy!
Book 10 of the Highland Vows series, final book I believe, was everything I expected it to be and so much more. Julie Johnstone is always exceptional and surpassed herself in this story about William and Ada. William determined to fulfill the orders of his King but keep his heart intact and Ada just wanting to love someone and have someone to love her in return for herself and not her gift. I love a brave and strong female character and Ada fulfilled that role time and again. William the quintessential warrior determined not to fall in love. The two of them manage to fulfill their mission for the King of Scotland with the help of all the good guys. Loved the fae part of this story and series, and the end of this book is very satisfying for that happily ever after. No one should be disappointed in this book! Thank you, Julie! This is why I read all your books.
Receiving a gift that brings more trouble than blessings, Ada becomes the pawn in her step-brother’s schemes. As a woman in medieval times, she has very little power to set her own course, other than those feminine wiles that are part of every woman’s skill set. With Brothwell using the vilest form of persuasion to force Ada to cooperate, she is surprised when William arrives at the gathering uninvited and succeeds in winning her hand. The plot is fast-paced, adventurous and romantic. Neither William nor Ada know whom to trust, but as they sort through the threads of deceit and betrayal, they begin to realise that they need each other to succeed in their mission. The plot is well written, encompassing a feisty woman who is discovering just how much power she has, an alpha warrior who is her protector and two mischievous faes who mismanage their fairy dust. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, the moments of humour, but above all the growing and powerful romance between Ada and William. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.

*King Maker*
Do you believe in the fey fairy? Did they give Ada a gift or a curse? William was afraid to give her his love and fought to protect his heart. Ada had already proven her love by risking her life for him. She had cracked the wall to his hard heart and become his life. A beautiful love that even the fey fairy couldn’t control.
\Will or William grew up!!
I don’t think there has been a Julie Johnstone book or story that I have not enjoyed. She writes the kind of stories that reaches into the depth of a hero or heroine and makes you care about them.
Mild spoilers… Once again King David’s quest to keep his crown sends one of his loyal subjects on a mission. This time it is William MacLean who must serve his King to ferret out his enemies and wed a lass that may also be an enemy. (I am beginning to think that King David is tiring of constant struggle to defeat his enemies.) King Maker, Ada MacQuerrie is the prize worth a Kingdom. William wants to remain true to himself without love, Ada wants love and passion.
Ms. Johnstone has created a world full of wonderful characters both good and bad that make me want to loath the bad guys while cheering on the good guys. I found William and Ada’s journey engaging and enjoyable. And I loved the fae!
One comment about the writing, I would like to see Ms. Johnstone include a little more description in the surroundings, clothing and characters (including the hounds). Not having as much detail did not detract from the story, but for me, I would have liked to have more description in the story.
I received a free copy of The Heart of a Highlander for my honest review. So buy it and read it, you will love it!!
I really enjoyed this book. The characters are both likable and well-written. I knew William would have a good book. He deserved it. Ada was just the woman he needed to thaw his heart. I didn’t want to put this book down and only did so long enough to sleep and eat. The pages flowed smoothly and at a fast pace. This book can be read as a stand alone, but even better as a series. I was not so thrilled about the fea, but understand that is what created the story. It was creatively written. Julie did an exceptional job on the series.
