Jake Silver may not be able to put the memories of his time as a sniper and Navy SEAL behind him, but at least he can put his skills to use as a part of the Jones Inc. rescue team. Saving the life of pediatric heart surgeon Dr. Aria Sinclair on Denali helped too. Now he can’t get her out of his head, and when he hears she is in the path of a hurricane down in Key West he can’t help but jump on a … a plane to rescue her.Aria has dedicated her life to helping children born with defective hearts. After all, she was one of those children. Now driven to succeed, she lives a lonely, stressful life. One she would have lost on Denali if it hadn’t been for Jake. Jake is exciting and handsome, but he’s also dangerous, and she’s already lost one person she loves. She can’t bear it again. It’s not until she finds herself trapped in the middle of a category 4 hurricane that she can admit she needs Jake desperately. With their very survival in the balance, can they hope for a second chance at life . . . and love?

Wow! What a rollercoaster of emotions this book brought out! I was so impressed by the writing that it made me want to search for more books by Susan May Warren. THAT is when you know a book is GOOD!
The story is full of suspense and horrible situations for Jake and Aria. Each of them end up saving the others’ life more than once due to events caused by natural disasters. They both have a love for saving lives in their own professions and it shows throughout the book. They find that until they forgive themselves for past events that were out of their control, and place God at the center of their lives, giving Him control, they will never find peace, happiness, and true love.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys inspirational suspense love stories. I received a copy of this book from NetGalley. All opinions in this review are my own.
Loved this book. I was gripped from the start by the complex relationships and backstories of the male and female protagonists. Jake is still trying to make amends for a childhood tragedy, despite the event being beyond his control. Aria remains overshadowed by the loss of her twin. When she goes to Key West and gets caught in a hurricane, obviously Jake runs into danger, he doesn’t know how to do anything else.
Their fight for survival against fearsome odds is the mainstay of the novel as both also fight their inner turmoil against the backdrop of faith. I found myself transported, flinching and gasping at a dramatic twist at the end. Bring on book 3, I say! Bravo.
I love the adventure and danger mixed with romance in Susan May Warren’s books. It really keeps things exciting and moving along at a fantastic pace. This series, like some of her other more recent, has individual stories happening along with an over arching story line. It’s all connected but comes together a bit at a time. I really love this approach because it keeps everything interesting. It also means that you really must read these books in order to keep up with everything happening.
Jake is the kind of guy that runs straight into danger. Literally. It’s as if he just cannot help himself. He is a hero by all definitions and in this book, he was running into danger on practically every single page. It made my heart weak. haha. I loved his strength and determination. I loved his hero kindness.
Aria is so smart and although she is battling some pretty big demons, she really keeps things together for other people when it counts. I loved watching her grow and accept herself. I was glad to have met Jake and Aria in book one and know their history there because it laid the foundation of their relationship and gave understanding to how it progressed in this book.
I always end Warren’s books satisfied and happy but eagerly awaiting the next book. They just cannot come fast enough.
Content: this is a Christian fiction book and has moments of stronger Christian themes. Some moments of violence, peril, death, kissing.
– I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
Susan May Warren is a master at keeping you on your toes when reading her stories! You never know what’s going to happen next, but you can be assured that something will happen and it will be completely unexpected! This is Jake and Aria’s story, who we met in book 1, The Way of the Brave.
I really liked Jake. He’s charming, brave, seriously likable, and seems to find someone or something to rescue wherever he goes. While I liked Aria, I struggled to connect with her a little bit because she sent one too many mixed signals to Jake. There was a lot of action and many twists and turns in this story – one that seriously had my mouth hanging open. I did feel like there was too much of Ham’s story, which is next in this series, in this story, I would’ve like more of Jake and Aria’s instead.
I also loved the faith message that was in this story. These lines really resonated with me, “Panic comes when we stop believing that God is good. Or, that God is sovereign. But He is both, And that is the key to peace, even in the midst of the grief or fear. Whatever Storm life brings.”
If you are wanting to read a romantic adventure with a lot of action, this is the story for you!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Heart of a Hero is book 2 in the Global Search and Rescue series. This story mostly focuses on Aria and Jakes hurricane adventure, but we also get a side story involving Ham.
This book can be read as a stand alone but I would highly recommend reading the books in order to get a better feel of the characters and plot development.
I loved the adventure, romance, and just the overall story and characters. I read this book as fast as I could because I was drawn in and didnt want to stop reading. I liked how Mimi and others tried to help heal Jake from his SEAL wounds and give him encouragement and peace.
Very well written, awesome adventure, likeable characters. I really loved it and cant wait for book 3!
I received a copy of this book complimentary for blog and social media review. All opinions are my own.
“Heart of a Hero” is the second book in the Global Search and Rescue series. Like other books by Susan May Warren, there is a main plot storyline and then a subplot storyline that follows a different character. This is Jake and Aria’s story, but we also get some of Ham’s story. Because the books weave the stories through the different books, it is best to read them in order. It was interesting to see some of the events of “Ford” from the Montana Marshals series in this book only from Ham’s perspective as this series runs concurrent with the events in that series. The book was well written and had characters you could relate with. The action just kept coming and I never knew what to expect. There was one part of the book that made me wonder about something (which is hard to describe without being a spoiler) and I look forward to seeing if my guess is correct in future books. There was quite a bit of biblical faith elements woven through the book and many great truths are shared. I can’t wait to read Ham’s story.
I got a free copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own and given voluntarily. No compensation was received for my review.
The Heart of a Hero is the second book in Susan May Warren’s Global Search and Rescue series, and only the second of her novels I’ve read. It would have helped a great deal to read that fact in the Netgalley blurb, so once again I find myself starting to read a series with already established characters and trying to figure out what happened to them in the first book of the series. In the case of this novel, it was obviously a lot. Thankfully, there were enough allusions to it throughout this novel that it worked as a standalone, but the more I read of The Heart of a Hero, the more I wished I’d read book one first. Something else that should have been mentioned in that blurb was that this is a novel of Christian romantic suspense. Since I am not a Christian, I found this novel to be more than a tad preachy for my taste, nevertheless, because this was an exceptionally gripping, intense and well-written novel, with well-defined, admirable characters who truly had depth and great backstories, it still gets 5 stars from this reader.
Jake Silver is a former Navy SEAL who, 6 months earlier, received a medical discharge from the military because he was emotionally tortured by an event in Afghanistan. He joined Global Search and Rescue because his SEAL skills made him perfect for the job. In book one, he rescued Dr. Aria Sinclair, a neonatal children’s heart surgeon. She and her friends were on vacation in Alaska, climbing Mount Denali when they were literally blown off the mountain, and Jake rescued her from what might have been sudden death and/or freezing to death when a blizzard rolled in. Once rescued, their attraction to one another started with a kiss, but they were interrupted, and while Jake wanted to pursue the relationship, Aria fled.
Six months after being rescued, Aria loses an in-utero patient, the loss shakes her badly, and she takes the advice she’s given and goes to Key West to relax and regroup, and soon finds herself surprised by an oncoming Category 4 (upgraded to 5) hurricane, with the resort owner having a heart/breathing crisis. Since Aria refuses to leave the sick woman, she manages to get Mimi and Yola, her daughter, to a hospital where they are stranded since the island was evacuated. When Jake, at his parents’ home in Michigan, learns her whereabouts, he dons his superhero cape and rushes off to Florida to find her. What follows is one harrowing story of danger, dedication and survival. Soon there are more people holed up at the hospital, a pregnant woman, a young boy, his dog, a rather unsavory man, a 20-something drug addict, and, as if that wasn’t precarious enough, dangerous criminals–prisoners who manage to escape from the Key West Detention facility escape and are on the loose once the hurricane tears down its walls.
There is also a secondary plot in this novel, in the form of Hamilton (Ham), a friend of Jake’s who discovers that his wife, whom he hasn’t seen in years because of her relief work in dangerous places in the world, never bothered to let him know he had a daughter. When the young girl turns up alive on a beach after a yacht explodes, a yacht his wife was on, Ham has no idea how to parent this 10-year-old, who hasn’t said a single word since she was found and sent to him. This novel ends in a bit of a cliffhanger, since Ham’s wife may still be alive. I dislike cliffhangers, and I didn’t see this one coming, but am guessing it will be the crux of the upcoming third novel in this series.
If you like novels about Navy SEALs, enjoy non-stop action/adventure thrillers with some non-graphic second chance at romance tossed into the mix, I think you’ll enjoy this gripping novel as much as I did, despite the few issues I had with it. I’m certainly planning to backtrack and read book one, and am eager to read the upcoming third novel in this series.
As mentioned at the outset, I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this novel. The opinions expressed are my own.
As usual with a Susan May Warren book, the cast of characters is varied and complex. From main characters Jake and Aria, to the interesting supporting players like Aggie, a traumatized child whose father didn’t know she existed, and a motley band of stragglers who shelter together out of necessity until the storm passes.
I like the way the author combines romance and adventure with plenty of factual “local color.” For example, I know nothing about sailing, but the vivid explanations of the sailing scene in the first chapter make it so much more real. Bits of the story take place around the world, and she infuses so much reality into these that you can almost see the sun sparkle on the Mediterranean, or feel the cold of a perilous Alaskan rescue.
In this fast-paced romantic suspense novel, Ms. Warren picks up not long after the first novel in this series. In the previous book, you meet Jake, one of the main characters in this novel. Jake and Aria bonded on the mountain, but everything changed once they returned home. Aria leaves to go to a medical conference. Unbeknownst to her, there is a hurricane headed her way. Jake discovers she is in danger and races to get there. This book has continuous issues that occur and cause Jake and Aria problems that put them in danger. Readers will want to allow for time to start this book and read until the finish. You will be that engaged in the story! Both Jake and Aria have their own fears that they must work through in this book. As always, Ms. Warren writes a suspenseful novel that intertwines faith and God throughout the book. Readers will be encouraged and inspired by the conclusion of the book. I highly recommend this book! This book can be read as a stand-alone book, but readers will benefit from reading the first book in the series as well. I can not wait for the final book in this series!
***I was given a free electronic copy of this book from the publisher for an honest review. This is my honest opinion. Even though I received this copy free, I have purchased her books before.
The Heart of a Hero was full of action-packed adventure as the story picked up with Jake and Aria, who definitely had some romantic moments in book one, The Way of the Brave. Things just seem to keep going wrong for these two! I loved that this book’s title truly embodied Jake. He was so completely a hero and couldn’t help but give his all for Aria and anyone else who needed him.
Jake and Aria had some huge issues and burdens from their pasts that impacted them. They both had big journeys to take, emotionally and spiritually, in order to get past what held them down. I loved seeing their hearts for each other, and especially the way Jake fell completely for Aria.
The side story featuring Ham was very interesting and I am definitely excited to read the next book in the series. The Global Search and Rescue series is a series that needs to be read in order and even ties into the Montana Marshalls series with some overlapping events. I’m loving finding out more and more details with every book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
*I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author and publisher in partnership with JustRead Publicity Tours. All thoughts below are my own and I was not required to post a positive review.
This exhilarating new story features former Navy SEAL, Jake Silver, and pediatric heart surgeon, Dr. Aria Sinclair, characters we met and fell in love with in The Way of the Brave, book one. Of the characters in this series, I loved Jake and Aria the most, their personalities drawing me in with a magnetic pull. We left them in quite the predicament in book one and this story picks up right where that one left off. As Jake and Aria battle through their shortcomings, emotions and a Cat 5 hurricane in the Florida Keys, they lean on each other and overcome another adventure of a lifetime.
The Heart of a Hero is exactly what I hoped for, and more. I thoroughly enjoyed the setting of the Florida Keys and the nautical aspect Warren gives this story. She delights readers with twists and turns, surprises and moments that leave readers breathless. As always with her stories, I wasn’t able to put this book down. I found it more favorable than the first book in the series and I appreciated the story line and characters.
In my opinion, Warren is a master at mixing adventure, suspense, romance and faith into her books, as was the case with this story. The way she brings a scene to life with passion and heroism is truly a craft she’s honed well, leaving readers breathless and wanting more.
The undeniable connection between the two main characters had me rooting for them from the beginning. I love how they lean on each other when things get tough and I respected the way they each struggled, and eventually allowed, God’s grace into their lives, erasing their burdens and connecting them on an even deeper level. This story is not only exhilarating and riveting, it’s deep and passionate as well. It is very well written, it reads easily and I liked the insight into the characters hearts’ and minds. It also lays the ground work for the next story, enticing readers to come discover Hamilton Jones’ story in the upcoming book, The Price of Valor.
Jake Silver, former Navy SEAL/sniper, lives with the memories of the people lost at his hands every day. To make up for this, Jake now puts himself in danger for those who need rescuing. Aria Sinclair, a pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon, has devoted her life to saving children born with defective hearts. Having been one herself and losing her twin sister, Kia, in a motorcycle accident, Aria avoids recklessness so she never has to go through that again.
Jake’s last save was getting an injured Aria off Denali. Despite an attraction forming between the two, Aria gave in to her fear and pushed Jake away. Even though exhausted physically and still thinking of Jake, Aria throws herself back into her work, losing a patient. Having not forgotten her either, when Jake finds out Aria has been sent to Key West for a medical convention/vacation, not knowing a hurricane is headed straight for the island, he hops on the first plane.
The Heart Of A Hero, Book 2 of Global Search And Rescue, picks up one week after The Way Of The Brave. Susan May Warren quickly catches us up on everyone and then dives into Jake and Aria’s story, another riveting adventure. Occasional glimpses into Ham’s life, leading further toward his journey next, are included, as well as the mention of Dex from Montana Rescue, who is one of my favorite secondary characters.
Even though I have loved Jake from the beginning of this series, I was a bit worried about how the hint from book one of the way Jake dealt with his past would be handled. Thankfully, it was only mentioned in passing as he has moved on to better ways of coping. The theme of forgiving one’s self and facing fears with the help of God continues.
This is the kind of story I enjoy – one that is relatable and offers help and encouragement. While I realize God uses authors to reach those who do not know Him and that need is great, I prefer to read, as Jake stated, about characters who have been Christians all their lives, face temptation and maybe even stumble at times, but find their way back and meet someone they can make a future with. Some of Susan’s past novels had veered away from that and left me a bit discouraged, but this book was back on track. As I said in my review of The Way Of The Brave, this series is quickly becoming one of her best works.
I received an advanced reading copy of this book. I volunteered to read it and write a review.
Update: I purchased a paperback edition as well.

There are people who run from danger and there are those who run straight to it. Correction they run straight THROUGH it! It is if they were created to handle situations other people dread. Jake Silver former sniper and Navy Seal was created to be a rescuer. He has just returned home from a rescue mission in Alaska where he made the decision to join the Jones Inc. Rescue Team. The Team is made up of former Seals like himself who still want to make a difference in their world. One person he rescued on Denali was Pediatric Heart Surgeon Dr. Aria Sinclair. The time they spent together was intense and they both are struggling with what to do with their continued strong feelings for each other. They are from different walks of life. He loves danger. She does impossibly difficult surgery to attempt to correct heart defects on infants and children and occasionally doing in-utero surgery when necessary. Aria goes to Key West to present a talk on one of her most recent surgeries and for some rest and relaxation. Her trip turns deadly when a Category 4 Hurricane comes barreling straight towards where she is staying! As the storm is at its deadliest, Aria desperately wishes for the comfort and safety of Jake. Who else would show up in the middle of a Category 4 Hurricane? The guy with a rescuer’s heart. The one that lives for danger. The one that runs through danger. Jake Silver to the rescue! Can one lone man rescue a Dr., a pregnant woman, a badly injured woman, her granddaughter, a young boy, a random guy that is supposed to be helping them & the druggie they have locked up in the medicine bay of the hospital they are all stranded in? Be ready to stay up all night because Susan May Warren has filled this novel with all manner of twists and turns and will have you all worn out when you finish reading it! It’s great!
I received a complimentary copy of this novel from Revell and NetGalley. The opinions expressed here are completely my own and without influence.
The Heart of a Hero by Susan May Warren captured my interest immediately with the tension between Aria and Jake. As I read, I didn’t want to put the book down. The action, bravery, and romantic suspense combined to form a gripping storyline. Being from Florida and having lived through multiple hurricanes, I deeply identified with this book. I could visualize the author’s descriptions of the water, the sound, and the damage caused by the powerful storm.
I also enjoyed the characters in The Heart of a Hero. I admired how Aria struggled through her issues and came into her own as she embraced her talents, worth, and identity. Despite the external drama of a raging hurricane, plenty of introspective moments made for good character development. Jake had his own issues to work through and overcome, but Aria was the one I felt invested in as a reader. I absolutely loved Mimi and her wisdom.
The Heart of a Hero by Susan May Warren is a keeper for my bookshelf and I plan to binge-read the entire series in the future when all the books are published. The Heart of a Hero stands as the second installment in the Global Search and Rescue series. Although some background on Jake and Aria’s relationship is given, I do recommend reading the novels in order as their previous interactions critically affect their relationship in this novel.
Disclosure of Material Connection: I was provided a copy of this book by the author or publisher. All opinions in this review are my own.
The Heart of a Hero is book two in Susan May Warren’s Global Search and Rescue Mission series. Featuring Jake Silver and Aria Sinclair from book one, this fast-paced tale is filled with heart-pounding danger and action that kept me anticipating yet dreading what was to come on the next page. Yes, this book is definitely a page-turner!
Riding out a killer hurricane in an abandoned hospital on Key West, Florida, Jake and Aria face one crisis after another. Along with several others, they must find food and attempt to keep everyone alive until rescue can come for them. As others are added to their scraggly crew, it is not easy to determine if they are who they claim to be. After all there are a number of armed, escaped prisoners roaming the island as well.
Another great book from this author, The Heart of a Hero was well written with convincing characters and a strong yet believable Christian message. The requisite romance and crisis of faith are included and combined with the other elements make for one exciting tale. I look forward to reading Ham’s story soon.
I voluntarily reviewed a digital copy of this book provided by Just Read Tours. A favorable review was not required. All views expressed are my own.
I have never been in a hurricane nor what to, but Susan May Warren in her newest release The Heart of a Hero definitely captures the danger and thrills associated with being in one. The action starts in the first chapter with readers starting to empathize with Aria, a familiar character, from The Way of the Brave. Just like the story heightens its tension, Warren captures the heighten emotions and feelings of Jake and Aria. I really enjoyed the fast paced novel. The story kept moving forward, and when I thought the story was about to have a break in the tension, Warren wrapped the characters in deeper trouble. Definitely a book for the keeper shelf. Can’t wait to get my hands on the final book in this series The Price of Valor.
I received a complimentary copy of The Heart of a Hero by Susan May Warren from Revell Publishing, but the opinions stated are all my own.
I didn’t think that anything could be as dangerous as climbing Denali which happened in book 1 of this series, but, along came a category 5 hurricane in the Florida Keys. And Jake and Aria was in the middle of it along with lots of danger that called for some heroic actions. Jake is always willing to take on his persona as a Navy Seal and try the impossible. He is there to rescue Aria and nothing is going to stand in his way. Susan May Warren is an excellent writer and her books will keep you turning pages to make sure everything turns out well. This is a story of forgiveness (especially of forgiving oneself) and accepting that Jesus will forgive you also. I highly recommend this book and suggest you start with the number 1 book in the series, The Way Of The Brave, so you will know the backstory on all the characters and be acquainted with everyone in this book. I hate that I now have a wait to read Ham’s story in book #3. I received a complimentary advanced reader copy of this book from the publisher with no requirement for a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Susan May Warren outdoes herself with The Heart of a Hero! You’d better clear your schedule, because once you turn the first page, you won’t be able to put this book down until you turn the last one.
The contrast between Jake and Aria from the first book to this one is huge – but stellar. I loved seeing the way that their wild and chaotic meeting in the first book transfers to ‘real life’ – only real life turns out to be anything but calm. This creates conflict we can all relate to.
That conflict turns into suspense and action from the very beginning. The drama starts out high emotionally and then kicks into gear in every other way – while emotions continue to run high, there are physical and criminal subplots that create tension with high stakes. This all translates into page-turning action for the reader!
Warren knows exactly how to write characters that draw you in. While both Jake and Aria are heroes with jobs that few of us can probably relate to, their fears, flaws, hopes, and dreams are different. They’re the kinds of things we all deal with and that makes them seem like the best possible version of the people next door. Her characters become people you want to be and people you want to know – and you can’t help but cheer them on with every obstacle they face. I love the way that Warren pits characters with traits that they both desire and fear, and the way that they face those obstacles makes for a fascinating story.
Warren ends this book with a TOTAL cliffhanger! It’s the kind of ending that finds you yelling at the book in your hand, insisting that more pages magically appear. She set up the next story well, though, and I can’t wait to read it!
Warren’s books are the ones that I make sure to put on my Goodreads ‘want to read’ list as soon as the date is released, but this next one might just have to be put on my paper calendar, too. I don’t want to wait a single day more than I have to wait to read the next installment.
If you like high-octane action, suspenseful stories, and heroes with heart, The Heart of a Hero is totally the book for you.
I received a free copy of this book from the author. All opinions are my own.
How does Susan May Warren keep coming up with more exciting and dangerous situations! Such a great story! Former SEAL Jake Silver is rescuing Dr Aria Sinclair again! Aria refuses to leave an elderly lady when an island is evacuated preceding a hurricane but she does not expect all of the events that follow! Nor does she expect so many other people to have been left behind including inmates from a prison. You’ll learn why Jake blames himself that his little sister is no longer part of their family and how Aria feels about her transplanted heart! Experience danger and romance with The Heart of a Hero ! I received an advance copy of this book from Revell Books and NetGalley. This is my honest opinion.
