In the classic storytelling style of The Noticer and The Traveler’s Gift, New York Times best-selling author Andy Andrews now delivers an adventure set sharply against the warm waters and white sands of the Gulf of Mexico in WWII America.
Saddened and unable to abandon her resentment toward the Nazi war machine that took her husband’s life, the young and attractive Helen Mason is living a … the young and attractive Helen Mason is living a bitter, lonely existence. Betrayed and left for dead, German U-boat officer Lt. Josef Landermann washes ashore in a sleepy town along the northern gulf coast, looking to Helen for survival.
The Heart Mender is a story of life, loss, and reconciliation, reminding us of the power of forgiveness and the universal healing experience of letting go.

fiction or non? That is the question as you read Andy Andrews book, Heart Mender. All the way through I questioned this. The story read as fiction yet the history it reveals is so little known. So which is it? You’ll have to read it to find out! Enjoy!!
Well written book and good history.
I absolutely loved this historical book based on a true story.
I would give this 10 stars if allowed to do so. This book was so inspiring and amazing. Please read it…… you won’t be sorry.
One of the best books I have ever read!
Really enjoyed learning about the U Boats in the Gulf of Mexico. Good read.
A unique WWII story, unlike others of the genre. I gave it 4 stars, not 5, because of the back and forth storytelling. Life aboard the German U-boat was much more interesting than small town life in Gulf Coast Alabama. Once the two story lines met up with each other, it got much more interesting. By the way, it’s based on remarkable true events.
This is a must for anyone who is interested in WWII. It is a must read if you live on or visit the panhandle of Alabama or Florida. Andy enlightens us in many ways and reminds us of doing the next right thing. Read this book.
This was a wonderful book. I couldn’t put it down. I’m sure it will be one I reach for and read many times.
I loved this book. Knowing it’s a true story adds to its impact. I wasn’t aware that there were German submarines off the American coasts during WWII. This book is about one of those ships in the Gulf of Mexico off Alabama’s shore. It’s about loss, second chances, forgiveness, and friendship.
I heartily recommend The Heart Mender. Our book club …
The Heart Mender–a gripping story of a woman whose husband was killed by Nazis during WWII and the Nazi who washed up on her beach on the Gulf of Mexico in Alabama–is based on actual events. The story itself is compelling, but the way it was written made it hard to read in a way.
First, Andrews starts the book with a first-person POV research …
Great historical fiction read!
The plot was based on true events about a little know story during World War Two. It was very interesting!
A truly enjoyable read. If you like WW11 history you will ove this book. I couldn’t put it down. A factually based novel. So good.
This is a true tale of the Gulf of Mexico and WWII. A total surprise to me. A great lesson in how we see others who are not just like ourselves.
Fantastic book! This gifted author had the best description of practicing forgiveness I have read in a while.
Any person who enjoys WWII history will like this book. It is an amazing story by an amazing story teller, Andy Andrews. I have met the author, and he is the genuine item!
The Heart Mender is an incredible story of heartache and harmony through forgiveness. This tragic forgotten piece of American history leads us to remember the sacrifice of young US soldiers who gave their lives. Why was this amazing piece of our history so shrouded? The story is written beautifully, embracing both history and mystery. I …
