The bestselling author and internationally celebrated physician and expert on nutrition offers an appealing, approachable health solution—eat the foods you love to lose weight and get healthy. For years, we’ve been told that a healthy diet is heavy on meat, poultry, and fish, and avoids carbohydrates, particularly foods high in starch—empty calories harmful to our bodies. But what if everything … if everything we’ve heard was backwards?
High in calories and cholesterol, animal fats and proteins too often leave you hungry and lead to overeating and weight gain. They are often the root causes of a host of avoidable health problems—from indigestion, ulcers, and constipation to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. On the other hand, complex carbohydrates like whole grains, legumes, tubers, and other starches provide your body with essential proteins and nutrients that satisfy the appetite while simultaneously fighting illness. But Americans eat far too few calories from carbohydrates—only about forty percent, according to Dr. John McDougall, internationally renowned expert on nutrition and health, featured on the documentary Forks Over Knives.
The Healthiest Diet on the Planet helps us reclaim our health by enjoying nutritious starches, vegetables, and fruits. McDougall takes on the propaganda machines pushing dangerous, high-fat fad diets and cuts through the smoke and mirrors of the diet industry. He offers a clear, proven guide to what we should and shouldn’t eat to prevent disease, slow the aging process, improve our physical fitness, be kind to the environment, and be our most attractive selves.
Featuring two dozen color photos and mouth-watering, easy-to-follow recipes for buckwheat pancakes, breakfast tortillas, baked potato skins, rainbow risotto, red lentil soup, green enchiladas, dairy-free lasagna and pizza, and more, The Healthiest Diet on the Planet will help you look great, feel better, and forever change the way you think about health and nutrition.

This is an excellent and informative book on how to lose weight and regain your health. It is not a diet- it is a eating plan for life. It is filled with peer reviewed science facts. Start eating this way and you are hooked because of how well and energetic you feel. This way of eating is not promoted in the media because there is no profit and no drugs involved. Eat plant based foods and skip the unhealthy processed food. After a few weeks your taste change and you will love the food.
Some of these look good but too much tofu. From what I’ve read, fermented soy is the only kind we should eat.
A waste of time to read.
I appreciated the recommendations and facts presented in this book and the tasty recipes to help make it succeed for their readers.
It made me change my way of eating.
It was a very informative book. I did learn a lot however I wasn’t crazy about a lot of the recipes. They seemed to be almost all the same with just an ingredient or 2 difference.
Very informative. This way of eating has gotten me off my high blood pressure meds and helped me tremendously with digestive issues.
You can reverse heart disease and diabetes
A simple overview of a plant based diet.
This diet goes back to the high fiber/ low fat style diet. Healthy maybe but I have to disagree with some of what he puts forth. I have learned over the years that each body is different and what is healthy for one might not agree with another. I can not eat some of the things he claims are healthy because my body objects. If a food causes me problems I don’t eat it. You have to pay attention to what your own body is telling you.
Dr, McDougall has a simple down to earth way to keep or regain your health.
Great book. I was looking to improving my diet.
A trove of wonderful recipes, delicious!! All are based on simple ingredients and proven family favorited. Solid and simple approach to radically improving one’s overall health from an experienced medical doctor and highly respected pioneer in the field of nutrition/health.
Although I’ve often considered a vegetarian diet I was never convinced it was the healthiest way to eat. After reading this book I am convinced it is indeed the way to go. I have tried the paleo and ketogenesis diets, Atkins and all the other high protein diets. I could not sustain them, and ended up heavier and sicker than before. I now have diabetes and fibromyalgia, heart disease and neurological problems. Those I know who are vegetarians and watch their sugar intake are slim and healthy. As I embark on this new chapter of my life as a vegetarian, I, too, look forward to feeling better and enjoying a healthier lifestyle.
A definite read.
Good info but same thing said before just updated and repeated in new book.
The author makes a lot of sense regarding the health benefits of “natural” foods as opposed to highly processed and animal products. However, his restriction of all oils and most fats does not make sense. And the recipes provided don’t thrill the tastebuds. We will use his recommendations, though, to make better food choices.
I learned!
Common sense approach to weight loss and better health for those of us who are facing age-related deterioration diseases and problems. Since adopting this “diet” which really is a new way to eat I have lost weight, my metabolism has speeded up, my cholesterol has dropped 45 points, and my blood pressure has improved.
Supports the research I’ve read about Plant Based Nutrition.
Too preachy and recipes aren’t any different than other books
