One god’s love will heal my heart. Another god’s love will heal humanity. So I can heal people. Sounds cool in theory. Feels great when I can actually swing it. Unfortunately, my dad is all about keeping a low profile and healing folks only when it’s absolutely necessary. I suppose that’s best even though I’m super sick of hiding what I can do, especially from my best friend Angie.I think I might … Angie.
I think I might have royally screwed up, though. Someone has been following me for weeks, and there are two new guys at my school who act like they know me, asking me pointed questions about my work at the hospital and how I “help” people. Tie and Victor may say they’re seniors in high school, but they don’t play the part so well.
I should stay away from them. It would be the safe thing to do.
But if I play it safe, I’ll never find the answers I’m looking for…
…and I’ll never understand this connection I feel to Tie.

Loved this book.
This is one of the best books I’ve read in my whole life! I’m so impressed from the amazing characters and story. The book is unpredictable, fantastic and wonderful and I’m happy because there are 3 more books after the first one (the Healer) in the series.
I love, love, love this book! Hope is a wonderfully selfless character who only wants to heal the suffering, injured, ill people she cares about even to the detriment of her own health. Her best buddy, Angie, is a great comedic relief who is very likable. She surprises us with her own abilities later on in the story. Throw in two hot new guys in school, add in some Japanese mythology, a very talented author, Ms Anaya, and you have a very entertaining read. I can’t for the life of me know why I hadn’t read this book before now. I’m off to read book two now. Can’t wait to devour it!
The Healer: A Fated Mates Fantasy Romance (The Healer Series Book 1) Kindle Edition
by C. J. Anaya
I received a complimentary copy from the author via BookFunnel. I am choosing to leave a fair and honest review
Wow! What a beginning! A wonderfully written PNR, filled with things like delicious foreshadowing, fun name play, forever best friends and wandering Gods.
Hope has a gift, an amazing gift. She can heal. Her Doctor father strives to keep her ability a secret, even as he calls to the emergency ward for the cases he can’t heal. Even as she works in the children’s canser ward. For years, until she was seventeen, they were able to keep it just that way, a secret very few people know. Until Tie and his cousin Victor stumble into Hope’s high school and someone starts looking for the girl with healing powers.
Part NA romance and part NA coming of age/suspense, The Healer is one of those books that you aren’t sure if you want to roll around in and savor every word or one of those books, you want to race through and get to the climax and ending. I sort of did both, reading into the early morning light and then letting the section I read stew. The love story/fated mates story doesn’t end the way you think, but in the way it should.
The story was wonderful, but not as wonderful language and storytelling tricks that Ms. Anaya utilizes in this story. Also, the Asian mythology that Ms. Anaya incorporates reminds me of Amy Sumida’s work in its depth and breadth!
Part Sumida, part Japanese Pillow Book and part Sara J Maas, this book (and I am hoping, the series) is one of a brilliant kind. A shiny diamond in a pile of uncut ones.
The Book Nerd is dying to read the next in the series and then the next and the next.

I really enjoyed the story, but 3 stars only because I HATE CLIFFHANGER endings!!!
Great reading. Ending was so unexpected. I definitely endorse this wonderfully written book.
Love the plot and characters.
I loved this book! Very fast read since it was action packed and had a great story line!
It took a bit to get into the book but the book gets better as it goes along. I was drawn in enough that I read the entire series and enjoyed it a lot. It was different and satisfying. The characters were well developed and easy to bond with.
This series was a little slow at times, but all together it was quite good.
Hope is a normal teenager in a normal school with a normal best friend, so she thinks. She, on the other hand, is the furthest thing from normal. She is a person that can heal others by connecting to their “life forces” and showing their cell what needs to be done to heal themselves. She is in hiding with her father, who is a doctor at the local hospital. She finds it difficult to be around others that are hurting without helping them. Her father struggles to keep her reigned in because of his overwhelming fears of being found out for her abilities. But even with everything he has done to keep them off the grid, she is sought out and discovered. This was a really great story and a very quick read. It was one of those that every time I thought I was at a stopping point it drew me back in with a “No, don’t go” moment. I loved the characters. They were entirely believable in a fantastical fictional way. Even though it is obviously fiction, I liked that literary mythology was inserted. The descriptions used are tangible. I could actually see the black cherry blossom and the colors of Hope’s dress bleeding from black to red in Hope’s flashbacks with Musubi-no-kami. I enjoy reading things that make me want to look it up and see if it’s on track. I learned about Japanese mythological characters including Nekomata and the Japanese Deities. I felt so many emotions radiating through me throughout the whole story. I felt genuine pain for the sadness and feelings of defeat Hope deals with when it comes to Kirby. I felt the excitement with the underlying fear of meeting Tie and Victor. I felt how overwhelmed Hope must feel at the knowledge of her true heritage. I connected with Tie and felt strongly where he should be in Hope’s life. I see Victor as very stiff which makes perfect sense when it is revealed who he is in the ultimate scheme of thing. I think Angela is amazing and I find it interesting that after the accident she experiences when they are young, she becomes withdrawn at times and as Hope details, a “germaphobe.” There are many instances in the book that I would pull up a note and say, “who is this person in the bigger picture.” I would go back and forth from what I was reading to what I had read and have aha or how did I miss that moment. I stayed intrigued and involved throughout the whole book. Great Job! Hint to those reading this, you will not get all of the answers you want. The questions are left to be followed up in the series. It does not come all tied up with a pretty bow, but it is worth it!

The Healer was quite an interesting read. Its about a girl named Hope who has the ability to heal people by telling people’s life force how to heal itself. I know, sounds complicated. But I thought it was really well thought out and I found to be very interesting in the story. CJ did a great job making this visual to the reader. Hope also has a best friend with some weird niches of her own(one that I found to be obvious from the beginning). Hopes life gets turned upside-down with the entrance of two new boys Victor and Tie who seem to know a lot about her and seems to have a weird connection.
This book was filled with some great action. Not gonna spill it all but there are swords involved. Hellz yea. There is a complicated romance brewing between Hope, Victor, and Tie but I really enjoyed it. Ok I really love Tie, I’m totally on his team.
Overall I thought the story was ok. It kept me reading, but not dying to know what would happen next. I do think this book has some great things going for it and I do want to read the next book. There is a secret twist to the story that I loved. The romance is just right and not overbearing, the relationship between Hope and her best friend was funny and sweet, Hope’s dad is a refreshing sight in a YA novel, and some great action to boot.
If you like A Mortal Song by Megan Crewe and Connected by Kat Stiles then I definitely recommend this book.
I recommend this whole series to those of you who enjoy fantasy and romantic books and are interested in Japanese mythology. I loved the main character because she always does what is right for others; very selfless. I was surprised to find out what Tie had done. Once you read this one you will have to read the rest in the series!
Desperately needs a professional editor. The story and characters are engaging, but it’s so poorly written it’s difficult not to get distracted by the messy wording and poor grammar.
It was unsatisfactory!
A well thought out fantasy set in modern day U. S. “Ordinary” teens have extraordinary powers that they try to keep hidden, but Japanese gods then come after them, and the action gets thrilling.
It’s an easy read and very immersive. Binge read it in one night. Loved it so much!
I received an advance complimentary copy of the entire healer series for free to give a voluntary honest review. This is the review of the first book in the series and contains only my own thoughts and opinions of this book. First and foremost, thank you C.J. Anaya for the opportunity!
This book sure was something else, I’ll give you that. It reminded me a lot of anime or manga, which I’m certain is a big hit and a liking point for many readers. Me myself have never really gotten into the whole Japanese cartoon fan base, but I can see why others enjoy it. Even if this story might not be my kind of genre with the whole anime similarities, I can still appreciate its uniqueness as a book and storyline. I have never read anything like it before, that’s for sure.
I’m always impressed by a story’s originality, mainly because it is so rare to find a story that is not inspired by a popular theme or fan culture (zombies, vampires etc, that has been the rage for far too many years). C.J Anaya’s imagination, investment and hard work to achieve a great story really showed in the pages as I read. I think that’s what made it even more unique. The authors passion for the world she created really gave the book a personality. Made it fully her original creation and that awes me.
As much as I liked the one-of-a-kind aspect I could not fully get into this story, invest myself in the adventure. That’s not to say I didn’t like it. It was a good book and a lot of excitement, mystery and suspense. Best of all was the romance (romance = the sole reason why I live and breathe books). I’m not usually much for triangle drama, but I really enjoyed it in this one. It gave the romance a dramatic struggle, that and the mystery of what happened in her past life. It gave me the want and need for the two of them to be together. The different personalities and the links between the character, plus the fight for independence and free will really gave this book a relatable twist (excluding the mythological aspects of course). However, I found that it sometimes became a bit too much, too exaggerated, and the realism sort of went away.
One exaggeration was Hope. She just got one ability after another out of nowhere with no effort or struggle. Suddenly, she could heal the doomed and fight with swords like she lived for the art. Either that, or she was helpless and did nothing when she was treated like property or without respect. She did not even get verbally mad and stood up then. No apparently a kiss will solve that? Then there is Angie. I guess she was supposed to be the comedic relief, but it was too much. She could never ever ever be serious, always cracking jokes and interrupting great or intense scenes. All she did was annoy me. She was especially annoying because she always had to be there, no away time from her.
Another thing that struck me was how convenient and forcibly coincidental a lot of the things felt. However, I will leave it at that, for two reasons. One: explaining what I mean or giving more details will also give away spoilers. Two: I am hopeful Anaya will tie all together in the next books in the series.
I’m a bit at odds for how many stars I think The Healer deserves. At some moments in the book I wanted to give it at least four stars, but at the same time, just thinking about Angie and all the other things that bothered me makes me want to give it two stars. Luckily, that did not take over the whole book and I could see past it. So overall, I put it in between at three stars
This book was so well written, it was really an enjoyable read. Even though some of the characters are high school age, their manner of speaking is mature which aids in making this a good read for an adult. I loved the characters, especially Angie. She is such a spitfire. But besides her, you can tell that the author put a lot…and I mean a lot…of thought and care into the creation of each of her characters. Every character had development and growth throughout the book, taking them beyond the typically one dimensional feel.
While the dynamic was a bit predictable between a few of the characters, it was still worth it to watch them develop. I loved how all of these different events that occurred in Hope’s life tied together, in way that felt natural and not at all forced. The connections felt real and believable.
The ending was so good, I of course jumped immediately to the next book in the series. This is the first book I’ve ever read by this author, and I feel so fortunate that I was given a copy in exchange for an honest review. It lead me to discover a great author!
Really enjoyed this book.
