Best selling author, Wanda Brunstetter and her daugther-in-law, Jean Brunstetter have written yet another great book The Hawaiian Discovery, which is the sequel to their first book, The Hawaiian Quilt.
Wanda and Jean have taken their readers back to the beautiful state of Hawaii. where we are reunited with some of the characters from The Hawaiian Quilt and some new ones, as well.
This time we find Mandy and Ken Williams selling their Bed and Breakfast in Indiana and moving to Hawaii to help Ken’s mother run their organic chicken farm, after the sudden death of Ken’s father.

Ellen agrees to come to Hawaii and unknown her she is about to undergo a life changing experience when she becomes attracted to Rob, who is hired to help Ellen temporary run the chicken farm for the Williams. But Rob has his own secrets and when they are reveled it is a surprise to everyone.
The Hawaiian Discovery is a heart warming story of love, friends, forgiveness and learning to put one’s trust in God, and leaving the past behind. The book also takes us to some of the most beautiful places in Hawaii.
I would highly recommend The Hawaiian Discovery and If you have not read The Hawaiian Quilt, the first book I would recommend that you pick up a copy to read.
I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book by Barbour Publishing Company and the author. This review is my personal opinion of the book
The Hawaiian Discovery #2 Hawaiian by Wanda E. Brunstetter and Jean Brunstetter
A heartwarming story set in Middlebury, Indiana and Hawaii. The characters devotion to family, as well as friends, is only part of this charming story. They face challenges, tragedies amongst their dreams and hopes, find love, growing and enduring faith and prayer. I especially enjoyed the beautiful descriptions of Hawaii and the heartwarming ending.
~I received a copy of this book from the author/Barbour publishing (no monetary gain were exchanged), this is my honest review~
This is a very good read. Hard to put down kinda book.
Beautiful
I won a copy of the book from Goodreads Giveaways, I was not required to give a favorable review. This is a wonderful continuation of the series. Even though Mandy left the Amish she did before joining and so she was able to be close to her friend Ellen, who ended up being such support during her bad times. Ellen went to Hawaii to help Mandy when her husband Ken got attacked by a shark. But she was also able to he Rob\Reuben find his way back to his faith.
I have to admit that I didn’t like Ellen at the end of The Hawaiian Quilt. I found her to be self-righteous and cranky. I also didn’t approve of her meddling in Mandy’s love life—especially considering that Mandy was not a baptized church member. It’s not like she would have been shunned if she chose to stay in Hawaii. I’m sure that this is real-to-life but it still made me not like her.
However, Ellen did a lot of growing up in the year (or so) that takes place off-script. I actually really liked her in this book. I saw a gradual change in her character and I think a lot of her growth was due to her friendship with Mandy.
This book dealt with some fairly unique topics for this genre. I have to say that a shark attack (spoiler alert…sorry!) in an Amish book is not something I’ve ever read before. Then again, I’ve never read an Amish book set in Hawaii either so…there’s that.
I felt that Rob’s story was somewhat easy to figure out. I had part of his story figured from the moment I met him. But, when his backstory was revealed, I totally fell for his character. I love characters who have to overcome obstacles.
This series is just great. I feel like the characters complex and I’m reminded of why I truly fell in love with Wanda Brunstetter’s books so many years ago.
I would definitely suggest this book to others who love the genre and I would reread this series again myself.
This book was provided to me by The Publisher. I was not required to write a positive review, and have not been compensated for this. All opinions are my own
Ever wonder what it like to run a bed and breakfast? Well we learn about it a bit though the book of The Hawaiian Discovery. This is only at the beginning. This is where we start out at. Mandy and her husband Ken are the owners of the B and B. Their friend Ellen works there. Ken’s mother calls and we get where they fly back to Hawaii.
We are left Ellen managing the B and B. There are some tragedy and a few surprises along the way. We meet with Ron and Tavi. We start to learn about Ron. This take place mainly in Hawaii and I do not want to give away the ending.
Ellen get to fly to Hawaii for Emergency and spend time there. What happens and what develops while there is really sweet and surprises all. What find out and discovery will be the reason of the title.
Wanda does a wonderful job writing this book with her daughter in law Jean. What a story this and will Ellen get her wish? Ellen seem to be wanting what all Amish want but will she find it in Hawaii or will she not? You fall in love with the characters as you read the book. This book focus on Mandy and Ken and Ellen mostly.
Is Ron who he says he is or is he someone completely different? What could Ron be hiding, if that even his name. All these mysteries. What happens to Ken?
The Hawaiian Discovery is another heartwarming read that leaves the reader smiling! As the sequel to The Hawaiian Quilt, the story takes us once again from the gentle plains of Indiana to the tropical beauty of Hawaii. Familiar characters return, and the reader gets to know Ellen very well in this story. There is heartache, pain, friendship, loyalty, surprises, and love all wrapped into one book! This book is Amish fiction; however, it’s much different than a traditional Amish story. I believe anyone who enjoys Christian fiction will love this book! The characters are relatable and sweet, and the storyline is engaging all the way until the final page. This was an enjoyable read, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a sweet story in a beautiful setting!
This book was provided to me by Barbour Publishing. I was not required to leave a positive (or any) review. Opinions and ideas expressed in this review are my own.
The characters in this book are all very special people. When Ellen goes to Hawaii to help Mandy she doesn’t expect to stay away from home for so long. When Rob starts working for Kens mom he is surprised when Ellen showed up to work with him. Watching these two try to hide their feelings will have you on the edge of your seat. Rob is hiding something and when the truth comes out his friends are surprised. You will feel God working throughout this whole book. I would give this book a higher rating than a five star review if I could.
The Hawaiian Discovery Is the sequel do the Hawaiian Quilt but it can stand alone and I am glad because it is an original story line. The author takes you on a vivid journey through the Hawaiian Islands. This story has its ebbs and flows and it does that from word one to word last. The author’s journey takes you to the culture of the islands – everything about them – you will so enjoy it – I know I did. The author knows how the main characters relate very well and how they progress in the love department and she did that extremely well. I received a copy of this review from the Publisher and Netgalley; all of the opinions expressed in this review are all my own.

Five Stars Plus!
What can I say, this book is definitely 5 stars plus! I loved the first book “The Hawaiian Quilt” and I absolutely love the second “The Hawaiian Discovery.”
The book is mostly about Ellen and Rob. Ellen comes to Hawaii to help her Amish turned English friend, Mandy and her English husband, Ken. There she meets Rob who is English and he is living a life with a secret past. While Ellen is helping Mandy whose husband was badly injured from a shark attack while surfing, Rob is also helping by working on Ken’s family’s organic chicken farm. Ellen and Rob spend time together but cannot get romantically involved because Ellen would never leave the Amish faith and become English. I was shocked and surprised by reading on about Rob and was thrilled at the end. You need to read the book to find out what happened. You will definitely enjoy it.
I hope there will be another book following because we need to know what becomes of Sadie, Erza and Lenore.
I highly recommend reading the first book, The Hawaiian Quilt, because it will give you a better understanding of the some of the characters who will be in The Hawaiian Discovery book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.
The Hawaiian Discovery
I just love this series! Every Wanda Brunstetter book I have ever read has been hands down a 5-star read, and this book is no exception! This sequel to the Hawaiian Quilt book by Wanda and Jean Brunstetter takes us back to the Hawaiian Islands for another page turning adventure! With it’s many twists and turns along with a budding romance, it was truly hard to put down!
I can only hope there will be a third book!
While this book could be read as a stand-a-lone novel, I highly recommend you grabbing the first book, The Hawaiian Quilt, because it is so good, and also to better understand the history of the main characters.
I received a copy of this book from Barbour Publishers, but was not required to give a positive review. This is my honest opinion of this book.
The Hawaiian Discovery is book two in the Hawaiian series. A story that is full of faith, love, hope, dreams, trials. The Hawaiian Discovery was a wunderbar read. I have to say I really liked how the book ended. Looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
A great story by Wanda Brunstetter that I read in two days. I wanted to keep reading to find out what was going to happen next. There was a twist about one of the characters later in the story that I didn’t see coming.
The writing duo of Wanda and Jean Brunstetter are known for their warm and wonderful Amish novels primarily set in Amish communities. Their latest collaboration, The Hawaiian Discovery, is a special treat! In it, they take us back to Hawaii, the setting for the first book, The Hawaiian Quilt. The change of scenery by going to our 50th state adds another layer beauty, mystery, and excitement to the story. Many of the same characters return with the addition of some new faces.
Ellen Lambright, our protagonist, returns to Hawaii to help her former Amish friend when Mandy’s husband is seriously injured. Ellen steps in right away and gets to work doing what she can. As she works on the island she develops many new friendships and perhaps a love interest. But the best part is yet to come! The Brunstetter authors don’t leave the story at that, they include a wonderful surprise twist near the end of the story! It is a must read!
The Hawaiian Discovery is the second installment from Wanda Brunstetter and Jean Brunstetter’s Hawaiian series. I love this unique story of beautiful Hawaii and Amish love. Ellen is a likable character and I enjoyed the adventure she goes on. There are a few plot twists and surprises that I know I did not see coming.
Overall, The Hawaiian Discovery is a good book that I recommend. It would be helpful for a reader to first read book one, The Hawaiian Quilt. I give this one four stars.
I received this book from the publisher, but was not required to write a review. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.
It Was Amazing.
Format: Kindle Edition
The Hawaiian Discovery by Wanda Brunstetter and Jean Brunstetter is a sequel to The Hawaiin Quilt. I found this book to be every bit as good as the first book was. This story picks up about two years later in time. By now Mandy and Ken have settled into married life and are running a B&B in Middlebury Indiana.
In this book the main character is Ellen , Mandy’s best friend. I liked how the authors included characters from book one in this story and also added a few new ones as well. Readers were taken back and forth between Hawaii and Indiana and once to Pennsylvania.
In the beginning Mandy and Ken received bad news from Ken’s mother in Hawaii. A rushed trip found this couple remaining there with Ken’ s mother when his father died. From then on they face more trials and tribulations that they must work their way through. Ellen travels to Hawaii during a particularly rough patch of time to be there for Mandy and give her moral support. Life moves on and Ellen becomes interested in a man who works for Ken’s mother. He is English and she is Amish so the two try to keep their relationship on a friendship level. There’s a twist in the story as far as this situation goes. Lots of surprises and as the end drew closer I was kept turning the pages to see how it all ended.
I will say that Wanda and Jean write a very good story together. This may be fiction but the situations that come about are not unusual to things that happen in real life. The writers blended everything together smoothly in a way that readers can relate to. It’s about being there for family and friends when needed . It’s about forgiving yourself and learning to put your faith and trust in God to make all trials and tribulations work out for the best in the long run.
If you are a fan of Amish Fiction you will love this book. I would advise you to read The Hawaiian Quilt first if you haven’t already done so. I highly recommend both books.
I won a ebook copy of this book from a Goodreads giveaway . I was happy to review it and have been honest in my comments about how I felt about the book.
An Amish woman in Hawaii? What an idea! I was drawn to this new installment from writing team Wanda Brunstetter and her daughter-in-law Jean Brunstetter.
…my thoughts…
Ellen Lambright is the woman you want in your corner when tragedy strikes your family! She went to great lengths to do what she could to make life smoother for Mandy and her family. Rob worked alongside Ellen to keep Ken & Mandy’s business going and developed a good friendship. Although drawn to Rob, there was a bit of mystery about him that made her a little uneasy. Adding to that was the fact that he was not Amish and because of that, she knew that she couldn’t allow more than a working relationship with him. Ellen’s commitment to her faith was admirable if not difficult. Then there is Rob, who is attracted to Ellen. Would she consider him if she knew about his past?
The Hawaiian Discovery is Book 2 in the Hawaiian Series. Somehow I missed The Hawaiian Quilt but The Hawaiian Discovery can easily stand alone. I recommend this book to fans of Wanda and Jean Brunstetter’s books. The setting in Hawaii is just in time for summer reading lists.
I’m just going to say it, I’ve had one of those weeks were everything was chaos and chaos was everything. I finished this book days ago and haven’t had opportunity to release my thoughts onto the screen. (There is just something not as endearing as the page but well, technology.) Those emotions and initial thoughts aren’t right at the ready, and to some degree the super amazing words I had are lost forever. I’ll find something similar but that somethingness is gone now. Now, in true Fizzy style I’m going to totally change directions massively. If you don’t want any spoilers stop reading now and just jump to the next paragraph. That’s your only warning, next paragraph if you don’t want spoilers. Can we just say Amish Fiction meets Shark Attack!?! Two ideas I never in a million years would come together. Ever. That and thank you for sending them back to Hawaii, they belonged there after all. Minus the shark attack though, they didn’t need that. The story did, they didn’t.
What I love about Wanda’s books is actually what took me a bit out of this book. I still have great characters with great personal depth. I still have a well woven story that drew me into the setting. However, this story with all it’s bumps and bruises had a bit of depth missing for me. I wanted more from Ellen and Rob (especially Rob) and from Ken’s brother. Dan seemed like a shallow after-thought (though I guess in same ways that statement is accurate) and I feel like his behavior was too easily excused. Rob (also known as Ruben) dropped a massive bombshell on everyone, but especially on Ellen. I feel like there was this massive emotional opportunity and the ball was dropped in the field and no one was watching. It took something away for me and it made what little I had gained in Ellen slink down a bit.
Yes, let’s talk about Ellen. She’s still pretty annoying but in a better way. She’s grown and seems less legalistic and somewhat less fatalistic (but only a smidge). She is still, in some ways, self-centered but she’s definitely come a long way as a person. She put herself, her life (though to be fair her job was gone), and even her faith on the line to fly (yes FLY) to Hawaii in her friend’s time of need. She wasn’t the stick in the mud she had been last time she was there. She even branched out with an Englisher. Yup. Let that sink in people! I’m still not all in with her, I still think she’s got some growing to do, but she’s getting there. This book kept me engaged and on the edge of my seat. Perhaps a third book is needed just to get Ellen into a more well-rounded person? Just a thought 😀
I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by Barbour Publishing, NetGalley. I was not compensated for this review and all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own. I was not required to write a positive review.
The Hawaiian Discovery by Wanda E. Brunstetter and Jean Brunstetter is the sequel to The Hawaiian Quilt. Ellen Lambright is back home in Middlebury, Indiana working at Mandy and Ken Williams bed and breakfast. One day Mandy and Ken receive a call that his father his ill and they quickly fly to Hawaii. When Ken’s father passes away, they are needed to stay on in Hawaii to assist his mother with the farm and they must sell their bed and breakfast. While looking for a new job, Ellen works at her father’s shoe store with Ezra Bontrager. Ezra wishes to go out with Ellen, but he is fearful of rejection. A few months later, Ken is in a horrible accident, and Ellen quickly flies to Hawaii to be with Mandy. Ellen assists the Williams employee, Rob Smith with their organic chicken farm. As Ellen spends more time with Rob, she can feel herself falling in love with him. However, Ellen has been baptized into the Amish church and would not hurt her family by leaving. Is there a possibility of a future between Rob and Ellen? Rejoin Ellen and Mandy in The Hawaiian Discovery.
I thought The Hawaiian Discovery was well-written and had a steady pace. I do recommend reading The Hawaiian Quilt before you begin The Hawaiian Discovery. The characters are nicely developed with the realistic foibles. We get beautiful descriptions of Middlebury and Hawaii. The plants and sights in Hawaii sounded amazing along with the pleasing weather. I cannot imagine working or running a chicken farm. The smells described had me wrinkling my nose in distaste, and I could imagine the noise caused by so many birds (my neighbors have some chickens and they are a noisy flock). It was nice to revisit Mandy, Ellen and the other ladies. The Christian elements are masterfully woven into the story. Forgiveness from others and of oneself being the biggest theme in The Hawaiian Discovery. Guilt from an event can weigh a person down and change the course of their life. Forgiveness is a healing balm. In The Hawaiian Discovery, we see the importance of family, friendship, loyalty, faith, prayer and patience. The Hawaiian Discovery is a special story that will linger with you and the ending will leave you with a smile on your face.
The Hawaiian Discovery, sequel to Wanda and Jean Brunstetter’s The Hawaiian Quilt, picks up about two years after the first ends. It is a page-turner with a fast-moving plot and delightful characters, a beautiful story of change, faith, and family ties. It can be read as a standalone as the authors do a marvelous job of giving just enough about the past to refresh one’s memory or introduce the characters.
Ellen loves the work she does for best friend Mandy and Mandy’s husband Ken, at their Pleasant Valley B & B. She lives with her parents, and her father owns a local shoe store. Her family embraces their Amish faith, and she enjoys the Amish theme throughout the B & B, including quilts made by Mandy’s and Ellen’s families.
When Ken gets news that his father is gravely ill, he and Mandy immediately go to Hawaii. His parents own an organic chicken farm, and their help will be needed to keep the farm going. When tragedy continues to strike Ken’s family, he and Mandy must make difficult decisions.
Yet another crisis in best friend Mandy’s family sends Ellen to Hawaii. While she had planned to visit again someday, current circumstances couldn’t be much worse. Ellen helps on the chicken farm along with a temporary hired hand, Rob. They build a tentative friendship, and he takes her around the island on their rare days off. Rob, however, is English, and Ellen can’t consider anything more than friendship. He has secrets of his own, so he could not consider any future with her, either. Both struggle with their feelings for each other.
Ellen and Mandy are my favorite characters; they are three-dimensional, delightful young women. I like watching them, and the others, pray and be able to share a word of scripture with each other in encouragement and friendship. I also appreciated seeing Ken’s mother, Vickie, pray through a huge decision she made. All the characters, each in their own way and time, show challenges and changes to their faith throughout long, troubling days.
This novel captured me at the beginning and, with each twist and turn, drew me in deeper to see how these people of faith would respond challenges, some that seemed insurmountable. The plot was interesting, and the characters seemed so real! I read, celebrated, and ached with Mandy, Ken, and Ellen. I hadn’t thought much before about how the Amish travel, and learned more about it. I envied the ease that Mandy and Ellen had of sharing scripture verses, challenging me to try to re-learn those verses I used to know. The Hawaiian discovery, to me, not only refers to a certain event, but to what the characters discovered deep inside themselves. I highly recommend this novel to those who appreciate well-written Amish/ Christian women’s fiction.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.
