People whisper rumors about a family murdered at Ashburn House. They say its old owner, Edith, went mad in the building, and that restless ghosts walk the halls at night.
When Adrienne arrives on the gothic house’s doorstep, all she has is a suitcase, twenty dollars, and her pet cat. She doesn’t know why her estranged Aunt Edith bequeathed Ashburn to her, but it’s a lifeline she can’t afford to … lifeline she can’t afford to refuse.
Adrienne doesn’t believe in ghosts, but it’s hard to rationalize what she sees. Strange messages have been etched into the wallpaper. Furniture moves when she leaves the room. And a grave hidden in the forest hints at a terrible, unforgivable secret.
Something twisted and evil lives in her house, and Adrienne must race to unravel the decades-old mystery… before she becomes Ashburn’s latest victim.
A USA Today Bestselling Novel.

I loved this book–though I had to put it down several times during particularly scary moments to catch my breath. I highly recommend this for those who love a good scare.
Great book, couldn’t put it down. Darcy Coates is an excellent writer! I have enjoyed all of her books.
4 1/2 stars
The Haunting of Ashburn House starts out slow… incredibly slow. By the halfway point, I’d started to worry the book would be a disappointment. Until the chill factor increased.
Addy doesn’t know what to believe. Was her Aunt Edith crazy? Evil? Or did she give Ashburn House to Addy because she actually cared? The townspeople whisper about the tragic past of her home, but no one seems to know the truth… except one man.
As Addy tries to learn about her family, and attempts to unravel the mysterious happenings around Ashburn. Nothing is as it seems, and perhaps she’ll find the caring family she’s yearned for before it’s all said and done.
I must say, the ending of The Haunting of Ashburn House is now one of my favorites among Ms. Coates’ books, with Craven Manor a close second.
If you want a slow paced read that ends with a bang, The Haunting of Ashburn House is the perfect choice. Chills, thrills, and so much more
The Haunting of Ashburn House was just what I need for spooky season. This book won’t change any lives or make you feel all the feels, but it will give you the creeps while weaving one hell of a mystery.
Adrienne was a bit dense at moments and it seems like one moment she refused to believe in ghosts and the next she was all about them. The story Coates writes about the Ashburn’s especially Edith was really well told, and I kept trying to figure out what was going on. The most obvious of course was the answer and I didn’t even see it which I adore. I would definitely read another one of Darcy Coates books. Very enjoyable and chilling.
I enjoyed this spooky haunted house tale by author, Darcy Coates. It was creepy and mysterious, but not to the point of being spooked out of my skin. Still it kept moving right along and I am giving it 5* for keeping me entertained.
This had a mix of a haunting (very creepy corpse intent on eating flesh) and a ghost story (family murdered and the history behind it). Mirrors are not my friends anymore after reading this
What made this even better is the weather at my house while reading. It was clear, sunny and FREEZING (winter is here already ). Then it turned into this foggy, creepy and cold setting and of course had to be visible from where I’m reading this.
It’s good just Don’t read at night
I felt this was a well-written story and it definitely scared the hell out of me. It also made it hard to sleep. I really cannot pinpoint what exactly was so scary for me but it was simply terrifying to me. Adrienne and her cat, Wolfgang, are alone in Ashburn House far from town. At first, things seem ordinary but then mysterious things start to happen. This was, to me, a twist on a ghost story, just read it to see what I mean. It starts slow but then quickly picks up the pace that will make it hard to put the book down. Just leave the lights on as you read.
I loved this book!! It was a scary horror story with a happy ending, and even included a cat as the hero!!
The main character is Adrienne. She has inherited the gothic house from her estranged Aunt Edith. When she arrives, all she has is a suitcase, twenty dollars, and her pet cat.
She soon discovers that something twisted and evil lives in her house, and Adrienne must race to unravel the decades-old mystery… before she becomes Ashburn’s latest victim.
This was my first Darcy Coates ghost story, and it made me a fan of all her books. She has believable hero/heroines who get into frightening situations and the ending is a definite surprise. Even her ghosts are more interesting than those found in most horror stories. For anyone not familiar with Australian English, a “bench” is a kitchen counter top in North America. 🙂
Very scary. I preferred to read in the day and not when I’m alone. Loved the book!
Loved it!!!
Loved it!
I really enjoyed this book! Not your run of the mill haunting. This one will get your heart rate up and melt it with an unforeseen ending! Must read!!
This is a well-crafted tale. Once you enter the world created by the author, it is internally consistent and good for a few shivers. Get it and read it on Halloween.
Excellent, scary and creepy story. Different scenario. Can’t get any better than that! Very unusual ending but the ending had to be unusual. Can’t get the story out of my mind! Edie
At first the story started out slow, but quickly picked up pace. Has some major spook factor. So much so, that I switched books before bed just so as not to have a creepy nightmare.
Finally…a Darcy Coates book where I’m not frustrated or left wanting by a character. Why stick around then? Because she really does write a good story. This isn’t technically a haunted house story but I really enjoyed it nonetheless. The first half definitely had a creepy factor…unless you aren’t the type to be creeped out by old houses left to you by a great aunt you never met and upon entering said house you see weird things but you can’t ask anyone in the very small town because she was apparently eccentric and people steered cleared of her and her creepy house…but then why are you here?
I definitely enjoyed where it went. I even liked the ending. So i’m quite happy with that because this would have been the last Darcy book i’d have read otherwise.
Spooky
I really liked this. Perfect for getting in the Halloween mood. I’ll have to check out other books by this author.
ETA: I had to come back and edit my review, well because I hate typing on my kindle. This was the best horror story I have read in a long time. After reading some of the other reviews I see that other people feel her previous work was better. So I am totally starting The Haunting of Blackwood House today. I am usually a romance reader, but I love horror stories in the Fall to get me in the Halloween Spirit. I think Darcy Coates has just became a favorite of mine.
If you’re into scary books, take a chance on this one. It would be worth your while.
