People whisper rumors about a family murdered at Ashburn House. They say its old owner, Edith, went mad in the building, and that restless ghosts walk the halls at night.
When Adrienne arrives on the gothic house’s doorstep, all she has is a suitcase, twenty dollars, and her pet cat. She doesn’t know why her estranged Aunt Edith bequeathed Ashburn to her, but it’s a lifeline she can’t afford to … lifeline she can’t afford to refuse.
Adrienne doesn’t believe in ghosts, but it’s hard to rationalize what she sees. Strange messages have been etched into the wallpaper. Furniture moves when she leaves the room. And a grave hidden in the forest hints at a terrible, unforgivable secret.
Something twisted and evil lives in her house, and Adrienne must race to unravel the decades-old mystery… before she becomes Ashburn’s latest victim.

I couldn’t wait to get to the end and was surprised.
very scary
I have read several of Darcy Coates books and this is one of my favorites! A little advice, don’t read before bed if you plan on sleeping.
I’m a horror story veteran, but this book scared the pants off me!
An old house, a family murdered and a new heir to the property arrives… Old standards for horror stories. Mind you, I never get tired of them because they’re my favorites. But this book frightened me beyond my wildest expectations.
If you’ve ever read Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House or We Have Always Lived in the Castle, you know what kind of stories I like. It’s been awhile since I’ve read them, but I believe that this author is supplying us with books that channel Miss Jackson’s spirit.
Darcy Coates has a remarkable way with these kind of stories. I haven’t seen a book of hers with less than four and a half stars. But she really did a number on my nerves with this one. And, there’s a cat in it! I give it five stars, but it deserves ten.
I love Darcy Coates and have enjoyed each of her books. The Haunting of Ashburn House was haunting and entertaining. I sat down to read it and finished it in one sitting.
A good read a bit unbelievable but still a good story.
I went into this expecting just a “haunted house” book. I was wrong. The story is original and kept me guessing. I really enjoyed it.
