Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.
Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.
But what Starr does—or does not—say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.

i love this book it is happy and sad at the same time and the movie was awesome i even cried
This book was amazing! I have never had a book inspire me or even impact me like this one did. Probably my favorite book now.
i want to read this book really really bad!!!!
I’ve never read the book but I saw the movie.
Great YA but everyone should read it.
Such a beautiful book . Heart-wrenching . Honest . A must read .
The characters were likeable and the story was engaging. This novel sheds a light from one viewpoint on current events that sometimes is overshadowed by other viewpoints. It did a good job showing racism in many forms – white people discriminating against black people, black people discriminating against white people, even asian discrimination. Kind of reminds me of the song from Avenue Q…
Sadly, these things are still happening today! Perhaps increased awareness will help bring it to an end! You need to read this one, even if you disagree with it afterwards!
Every white person I know needs to read this book. It vividly portrays “driving while black.” We white people don’t second guess whether we’ll be profiled. We’re invisible and entitled. This “shows” the reader without being didactic. Another good one is Dear Martin.
This book is AMAZING. Everyone in middle school and up all over the world should read it
So many people could place themselves into a situation where they feel the same as the girl in this book feels. Sometimes life sucks because of the actions of others!
one of my new favorites. so important!
Couldn’t put it down

i will so recommend this book because its so realistic and cool
i love this book the characters and definetly the movie
Amazing story that really makes you think. Lots of conflict with no easy answers got me emotionally invested in the narrative.
This was one of my favorite books to read last year. It was beautifully written. I will definitely read from this author again.
Only by listening can we truly understand. Read this book.
