Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.
Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.
But what Starr does—or does not—say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.

Thought provoking
it bring the prospective of how colored people are treated by cops and other people.
The book was well thought out and really opens your eyes to how racism is and how it always will be unless we do something about it. It shows it through the eyes of a teenager and she experiences it in different ways throughout the book.
A brilliant, thought-provoking, heartbreakingly beautiful debut.
One girl’s coming-of-age story as she deals with the senseless killing of her childhood friend. As the only witness, her courage is admirable, and I loved how she stands as a real kid, with family issues and boyfriend drama. Highly recommend!
Quick read — not a world I know anything about.
This book was far different from any other I have read. It portrayed a world totally foreign to an old white lady from Midwestern America. I highly recommend it as a book club choice, especially if you want to read something by an author of color.
I can not say enough about this book! It is so relevant and poignant, that I could not stop reading to see what happened next. The characters are so beautifully written that I feel like I know them and wish that I did. This book should be a must read in every high school in America.
A sensitive telling of the tragedies resulting from race discrimination. Seeks to inform us of the emotional as well as the actual impact.
I loved but I hate the cop that’s all I can say but I love Starr shine girl
I loved the emotions.
This book was amazing there were so many ups and downs I read this book for my 8th grade class and honestly at first i didn’t want to read it because it had so much words and pages but then I fell in love with this book in every page I read there was so much more emotions that I have ever read.
it’s a good book recommended to teens
Speechless
A wonderful and very realistic book. Discusses topics that not everyone seems to have in consideration but are very important. On daily bases people are trated unfairly just because of the looks of them, that has to change and this book explains exactly why.
I think it is a perfect book because it shows you not to judge people by there skin color.
Simply captivating.
I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Such a timely book that should be required reading in schools. Told from the protagonist’s point of view, the reader is still able to see how everyone is affected by police brutality.
I like everything its a good book
