‘Genuine happiness is a ‘now-and-here’ skill.’
‘You don’t have to be happy for the rest of your life, only now. Be.’
Authors Louis Fourie and Kevin Horsley are two friends who share a keen interest in the dynamics of ‘the optimal life’. They come from different professional backgrounds, yet are united in their sense of optimism, love of simplicity, and belief in humans’ capacity to improve. Louis spent the first 10 years of his professional career practising as an economist in the South African financial industry and was one of the first winners of South Africa’s Economist of the Year award. He later became one of the founders of a leading South African wealth management business and acted as chairman of the group for twelve years. After retiring from corporate life, he founded The Logic Filter, a small consultancy through which he mentors young professionals and acts as an independent advisor to emerging business leaders. Louis contributed to numerous national economic publications over the years, and co-authored a number of books on different subjects. Kevin is a lifelong student in the field of neuroscience. He has been analyzing the mind and memory and its capacity for brilliance since 1990, looking for new and better ways to ‘run your own brain’ and optimize its capacity. He is one of only a few people in the world to have received the title ‘International Grandmaster of Memory’. He is a World Memory Championship medalist, and a two-time World Record holder for ‘The Everest of Memory Tests’. He is an international speaker, trainer, and consultant and assists organizations in improving their thinking, motivation, creativity and learning.
Louis and Kevin introduce their tutoring about nurturing the happy mind by stating, ‘The principles covered in this book are for the young and the old, and for people of all cultures, religions, and genders. Happiness is an ‘any-time-in-your-life’ prospect, a ‘whoever-you-are’ opportunity, a ‘doesn’t-matter-where-you-come-from’ chance. If you
are willing to open your mind to the idea of happiness and to do what it takes, you may pleasantly surprise yourself. The layout of the book is simple. The first three chapters consist of a clear look at how happiness is perceived, what it really is, and what unhappiness looks like. In Chapter 4, we offer you a collection of carefully selected practical prompts to help you apply the theory of happiness to your life. This is the most important part of the book – trust the content. And in Chapter 5, we summarize it all in a final few words of encouragement. Make the most of it. Don’t look for perfection, look for value. Enjoy!’
And it is that sort of joy that the authors bring to the reader to assist in making our lives happy. As they offer, ‘What makes one person happy may make another miserable. There is no one key to happiness for everyone. Instead, the answers lie within you. In The Happy Mind, you’ll learn to find your own personal answers to your most important questions. What makes you happy? What changes can you make to bring more happiness into your life? And how can you let go of old habits, beliefs, and situations that no longer fulfill you? The aim of this book is not to push a specific definition of happiness. Instead, you’ll discover valuable insights that will allow you to create lasting happiness instead of being driven by short-term pleasure-seeking.’
Jump in, even if reluctantly, and after following the guidelines of this fine book, you’ll jump out into life with a happy mind – one that is yours and yours alone. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, April 18
