London, 1816 Cavalry captain Gabriel Lacey returns to Regency London from the Napoleonic wars, burned out, fighting melancholia, his career ended. His interest is piqued when he learns of a missing girl, possibly kidnapped by a prominent member of Parliament. Lacey’s search for the young woman leads to murder, corruption, and dealings with a leader of the underworld. At the same time, he … struggles with his transition from a soldier’s life to the civilian world, redefining his role with his former commanding officer, and making new friends–from the top of society to the street girls of Covent Garden.

Great Read
Predictable.
The end is rather sad as the hero is honorable but so poor. It doesn’t seem to end well for him although he pursues truth and justice only because it is the right thing to do.
I loved reading this story. Although it is fictional, it has an genuine flavor that hints at history.
Loved how the author made characters come to life. Great setting; felt like I was there and experiencing what the people were going through.
The protagonist is an unusual character. I admired the author’s originality but not the character.
The author has created a very nuanced main character whose strengths/weaknesses drive him to solve the mystery that presents itself. It’s one of those books that grows on you as your read it. Be patient.
Ashley Gardner’s detective stories are always entertaining to me.
I have not read a novel like this in awhile. I enjoyed the period piece with a mystery to solve. It kept my mind focused and involved, very enjoyable!
A good read. It’s a mystery set in the Regency Period in England. Learned more about life and politics of the time.
Good story!
I’d read another chapter in the life.
Okay
I enjoyed the story, the characters are interesting and well developed. Captain Lacey is a flawed human being who is refreshing in his humanity. I’m reading more of the series. I am completely caught up in the stories!
Very good reading.
It was a great read!
You could really feel the intellectual character of the protagonist. I thought it to be entertaining and well plotted.
Love the characters in this book.
Regency mystery at its best. This series is a re-release by the author. I am definitely going to read the next in the series. The hero is the very definition of a flawed champion. Angered by injustice to the point of recklessness, dogmatic to find the truth and solve the plight of the innocent (and those not so innocent), he plunges into his …
A very human story set in historic London where partially disabled Army Captain Lacey struggles to rebuild his life. Haunted by an all-encompassing darkness that falls around him at times, he is trapped with his memories and regrets finding escape in helping others find their way out of their own tragedies and disasters by acting where they can …
