London, 1816 Cavalry captain Gabriel Lacey returns to Regency London from the Napoleonic wars, burned out, fighting melancholia, his career ended. His interest is piqued when he learns of a missing girl, possibly kidnapped by a prominent member of Parliament. Lacey’s search for the young woman leads to murder, corruption, and dealings with a leader of the underworld. At the same time, he … struggles with his transition from a soldier’s life to the civilian world, redefining his role with his former commanding officer, and making new friends–from the top of society to the street girls of Covent Garden.
Book 1 of the Captain Lacey Regency Mysteries.

Very convoluted story involving multiple characters who did not add anything to the story. In addition, the story has twists and turns that have the feel of a staircase that ends at a dead end.
Cannot say it was one of the best, but I did finish it as I feel is my responsibility to the author. It is worth reading, but was very slow at times. Not much really happened that was not expected.
Easy to read and entertaining. I am looking forward to reading more of this series.
There are interesting twists to the plot but it was a bit too graphic and disturbing at times. Just not my style.
This was a suspenseful historical mystery. The book read very slowly. It was sort of a let down to finally find out who the murderer was in the end. It was a big build up to ending that was anticlimactic.
I have enjoyed this entire series. Great characters. Pure escapism in these crazy times.
Took me back to a time and place that was dark and wondering how the plot was going to thicken, who would be involved and who would help. An entertains and hard to put down mystery. Well written.
Good read, lots of action.
I loved this story!
Interesting look at gone by.
A well written, fast paced read, not too deep, but a lot of fun.
I have read every Captain Lacey novel I can lay my hands on. Some series become forced and predictable. These do not. I hate to think of the day when the author tires of writing them!
Very well done.
Didn’t finish this book, too dark for me.
While not great literature, it’s entertaining reading. I’m half in love with the protagonist, so I’ll read more in the series! I like crime novels set in 19th century England anyway. Captain Lacey is the kind of man of honor that you wish all men could be. When he gives his word, he keeps it, even to his own peril. He treats women like human …
I enjoy mysteries and historical books and found both in the book. Captain Lacy, an honorable man, has to toggle between high society and the underworld in search of the truth.
The plot included unexpected turns. The characters needed more depth. There were numerous characters who could have been developed. It felt like bits and pieces to the story were missing.
Good concept. I enjoyed the first person narrative. A good break from my usual romance novels.
Good introduction for a series. The story provides a lot of history of the main characters and between them. Action throughout and all is explained at the end. Several subplots help to the main plot solution clouded until the proper time for the reveal.
Ailliant book I would gve it more than 5 stars if I could. Well written a great read.
