London, 1816 Cavalry captain Gabriel Lacey returns to Regency London from the Napoleonic wars, burned out, fighting melancholia, his career ended. His interest is piqued when he learns of a missing girl, possibly kidnapped by a prominent member of Parliament. Lacey’s search for the young woman leads to murder, corruption, and dealings with a leader of the underworld. At the same time, he … struggles with his transition from a soldier’s life to the civilian world, redefining his role with his former commanding officer, and making new friends–from the top of society to the street girls of Covent Garden.

This ia the first in a series and I had to buy the next at full price because I couldn’t wait to see what happened next. The charecters are believable and have all of the flaws that we all have. Good and bad abound and I am hopelessly hooked.
What do you do when the Regency Romance you thought you bought turns out to be a Regency Mystery? You fall in love yourself with Captain Lacey and the extraordinary cast of characters! This is the first book in Ashley Gardner’s Captain Lacey Regency Mystery series. I recommend you read them in order as the characters that are introduced continue …

“Cavalry captain Gabriel Lacey returns to Regency London from the Napoleonic wars, burned out, fighting melancholia, his career ended. His interest is piqued when he learns of a missing girl, possibly kidnapped by a prominent member of Parliament….”
Thus begin the adventures of our hero, Captain Gabriel Lacey, now at thirteen books and …
I have enjoyed the Captain Lacey series and wish there were more.
Hanover Square Affair is a gripping, heart-pounding page-turner! Couldn’t stop reading!
The character development of the protagonist, Captain Lacey, and the ancillary characters was great. the unraveling of the whodunit itself was a little opaque for me, but that didn’t obviate the entertainment value of walking the journey with these characters. Gardner does a great job introducing us to her cast and their idiosyncracies
It’s one of those books you read but forgot you did.
A good mystery. Unfortunately you know things happen to people that are much like this today.
Really enjoyed this book, it was a nice blend of romance and suspense. The characters are likable and believable and the plot is interesting.
Miscategorized as romance, but still a good read.
A slightly off-the-beaten-path Regency novel with a rough-around-the-edges protagonist and intricate plotting. We’re taken into London’s back alleys and hidden places, not the usual ballrooms and grand houses, although wealth and privilege does play an important role. I really enjoy the plotting and the hero who so reluctantly yet ineluctably …
Currently on book 11 in the series – I enjoyed #1 so much I have bought the rest. I will be sad when I’m done. I have become quite engrossed
Strap yourself in to a comfortable chair and get ready to enjoy the Captain Lacey historical mysteries! I can’t remember a more enjoyable, and thankfully, lengthy series than this one. You will find yourself fully immersed with the Captain and his band of characters after book one, and reluctant to let them go when you reach the last book in the …
Start of a great series of Regency period novels with a very interesting cast of believable characters!
Great book with great characters. Captain Lacey is a complex man who continues forth as he believes.
It just drug on and on. I don’t like giving poor ratings, but I lost interest in it quickly. Even though I tried to like it, I couldn’t,
The first in a series, I tried this book recently because it was cheap on BookBub. Now on Book Five, I can’t get enough of these characters. Captain Gabriel Lacey is a hot-headed man of honor and an impoverished gentleman in Regency England who gathers around him a variety of men and women from all stations in life. You can’t help but love him …
I have read 7 of the books in this series now- they are worth it for the mystery and for the characters. Wasn’t sure at first I liked the hero, but he grows on you, he is not a perfect person by a long shot, but has his own sense of honor and way of dealing with things. Definitely recommend this book, and the ones that follow.
Good read.
