The stunning graphic novel adaptation • A must-read and collector’s item for fans of “the patron saint of feminist dystopian fiction” (New York Times). Look for The Testaments, the sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale, available now. In Margaret Atwood’s dystopian future, environmental disasters and declining birthrates have led to a Second American Civil War. The result is the rise of the Republic of … Civil War. The result is the rise of the Republic of Gilead, a totalitarian regime that enforces rigid social roles and enslaves the few remaining fertile women. Offred is one of these, a Handmaid bound to produce children for one of Gilead’s commanders. Deprived of her husband, her child, her freedom, and even her own name, Offred clings to her memories and her will to survive.
Provocative, startling, prophetic, The Handmaid’s Tale has long been a global phenomenon. With this beautiful graphic novel adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s modern classic, beautifully realized by artist Renée Nault, the terrifying reality of Gilead has been brought to vivid life like never before.

I read this book years ago and reread it last year. Every woman should read it, young and old.
Frightening because it was plausible to happen, and it seems to be coming to fruition – this dystopian society – under the wanta-be dictator.
Never saw the video series- the book is scary enough. Much too close to some parts of real life these days
Who knew when I read this in ’86 that it would be haunting me still. And Ms Atwood says there is nothing in the book that she included that hadn’t happened somewhere. And here we are. Gillead is arrived. This is a must read.
I loved this book & the follow up book too. If possible I think the second book, The Testaments, is even better. You’ll be glad you read them both. Thank you Ms Atwood.
I don’t think any other book scared me as much before or since. Beware!
A great distopia novel, joining the likes of 1985 and Brave New World. giving the reader a view into a future that could take place.
A classic that becomes more topical every day.
So unsettling that I’ve read it 3 times!
Terrible.
Brilliant
I found it tedious.
Not terrible but really too much inner dialog for my tastes.
I’d heard people rave about this book and say it was extraordinary, but I had no idea why and, for a long time just ignored it. Now I know. Wow!!!
I’m not so sure men would like it as much; it feels like a woman’s book, but what do I know? I loved (and hated) the very last sentence in the book. If you read it, you’ll know why
everyone who thinks…should read this book.
I got this by accident and the illustrations were very hard to follow like a comic book. It was not what I expected. I would have rather had the story by itself. I like this book in the imagination of an alternative world, it was haunting. I see why people were drawn to this story.
The audio version was not very good
The Handmaid’s Tale is in my top 5 books. The world Margaret Atwood creates could actually occur and that is the most frightening thought of all even more than any horror story.
This book is filled with sentences that glitter like gems. Haunting, action packed, with prose that often reads like poetry.
Margaret Atwood is a remarkable writer. This dystopian novel is frightening with hints of various parts of society past and present.
The visual storytelling in the graphic novel was extremely well done and fitting for this exceptional classic. One of the elements I liked about it was that it melded a current sense of feminism and what that is to the original work, which makes the book continue to fully resonate with readers.
