I don’t read a lot of short stories but this one caught my attention because it’s by one of my favorite mystery authors and stars DD Warren – one of the best fiction detectives ever. Novellas like this are supposed to help fill the time before the next novel and I must admit after reading it, I just can’t wait to read the new Lisa Gardner book – NEVER TELL due in February 2019.
A man walked into police headquarters to tell them he was dead. Of course, he was really alive because he was standing there but a few hours after he left, the detectives got a call that he had actually died – really died! DD and her squad go to his mansion to investigate and meet up with a quirky bunch of characters. They have to determine why he previously thought he was dead and who was responsible for his ultimate death. The widow, the doctor and the servants are all suspects and its up to DD to figure out who is responsible despite lots of twists and turns along the way. It was a quick fun read that showcased DD Warren at her best. Now bring on NEVER TELL!
Thanks to the publisher for a copy of this book to read and review. All opinions are my own.
This was an interesting quick read as part of the D. D. Warren series. I liked the back-and-forth time frame. It was clearly marked so easy to know where you were in the story. I always enjoy reading when I can learn something new. And the name of the psychological condition that was the premise of this book was new to me. I recommend this good short read.
Thank you to NetGalley and Cornerstone Digital for my advanced review copy. All opinions and thoughts are my own.
The idea of this story was original and compelling, but It then turned into a whodunnit which seemed less than original in the end. I also wasn’t a fan of the way the story was told (to the detective’s spouse).
Love DD Warren books
Great book
Fun, detective Clue-like story! Very quickly becoming a fan of this author so I had to snatch this one up as soon as I caught it. Very quick read, it flowed so easily I was shocked when reached the end. Will surely be back from more from this author!
Favorite Quote:
In the silence, D.D. could already hear his lie forming. For most people, the truth came quickly. Deception, on the other hand . . .
My Review:
This was a quick and mind-tickling tale that could easily be transformed into a television program – oh how I miss Goren and Eames on Law and Order, this would be a perfect case for them to dither and muse over. I enjoyed the conundrum of the mystery with the overlays of humor, odd details, and insightful observations. I have just recently stumbled onto the craftiness of Lisa Gardner’s intriguing cases with Look For Me, and am ready to assist the hard-working D.D. on her next case with Never Tell already loaded on my Kindle.
D.D. Warren has to solve a case of a man who ‘died twice’. She tells the story of her strange day to her husband, recounting how the man had come to the police station claiming to be dead, and then later was actually dead. The detectives go to the man’s house, in a very wealthy area of Boston, and question all of the servants, the man’s psychiatrist, and his wife. In her investigation, she finds that the dead man suffered from Cotard’s, which is a severe depression.
Quick read, enjoyable.

This is a great who-done-it novella to read if you’ve never read a book by this author before, though I have and I can tell you they’re all fabulous. This novella captures Lisa Gardner’s more lighthearted writing style, introduces you to the very competent squad she works with every day and you will also learn a little about her home life too. I really enjoyed the tongue-in-cheek storytelling between Detective Warren and her husband as they sit quietly while drinking wine and discussing their day; as if a day in the life of a homicide detective could ever be as entertaining as this particular day turns out to be. I read a complimentary copy of this book provided by Penguin Group Dutton through NetGalley and all opinions expressed in my voluntary review are completely my own.
The Guy Who Died Twice by author Lisa Gardner is a short story written about one particular day and weird case DD Warren solved in record time! The setting for the story is at her home as DD and Alex are having their cozy glass of red after putting little Jack and Kiko to bed. DD begins to tell Alex about the most bizarre case. A man appears at HQ and demands to see the detective in charge regarding a murder, his own! He is convinced he is dead! I won’t post spoilers but jump into this short mystery which happens a bit like the game Clue, or an Agatha Christi mystery. The theme is based on a non-fiction neurological disorder named Cotard’s Syndrome. If you enjoy DD Waren, this will be just the touch of mystery you need for an after-holiday break!

D.D. Warren has just had the weirdest day. As she sits home with her husband, she has to recount the story to him. If she hadn’t just lived it, she wasn’t sure she’d believe it.
A man walked into the station claiming to be there to report a death, his. He claimed he wasn’t alive anymore but was dead. Obviously suffering from mental issues, they called his house & sent him home in the car his wife sent for him. A few hours later, they were called to the house where he was really dead this time.
It’s truly remarkable how Lisa Gardner comes up with her story lines. This was quite hard to believe. It was interesting to read a little more of the process with the entire investigation taking place in one day. I’m not sure if it was the delivery (DD recounting everything to the husband as if it was a story) or the fast pace of the plot but I wasn’t able to get as emotionally tied to the story as I usually can with her longer books. This was still a very good story, just not what I was expecting.
This is an oddly intriguing story! I was never good at the game Clue and missed the clues in this story too. Once the detective was giving her speech at the end it so made sense. Great job. Thanks!
This short story (fewer than 100 pages) introduces new readers of Detective D.D. Warren to her tenacious character and re-introduces her to her fans in a fun, frolicking mystery. D.D. is enjoying some family time when she gets called in to investigate a murder, the murder of a man who came to the police station earlier that day to tell everyone he was dead. Adam LaToile indeed ends up dead, later that day. It is up to D.D. To solve the mystery, with a cast of characters reminiscent of Agatha Christie and her style of eliminating suspects one by one. I really enjoyed the way the scene switched from the murder mansion to D.D.’s home, where she was explaining the case to her husband. I liked having a short read to remind me of how much I really do love the D.D. Warren books, and I think those who read mysteries will really enjoy this one.
