NOW A TOP 40 AMAZON BESTSELLER!Strike One-My mother named me Theodore after her favorite chipmunk. Not cool, Mom.I‘ve spent most of my life answering to Teddy, because I couldn’t make Theo work.Except for here. College. The place where all bets are off, and I’ve managed to redeem myself. There’s only one problem, my new roommate, Troy, is football royalty and looks like he stepped off the set of an … royalty and looks like he stepped off the set of an Abercrombie shoot.
Doesn’t matter, I cook a mean breakfast for his panty parade, and we get along well.
And anyway, this year I got the girl. And she’s perfect.
That’s right. Theodore Houseman, former band geek, now marching band rock star has finally landed the girl of his dreams.
Everything is perfect.
That is, until Troy takes a good look at her.
I’m not going down without a fight. As a matter of fact, I’m not going down at all. As glorious as these days may be for my all-star roommate, Laney is my end game.
I may not know much about play strategy, but I’ve been the good guy my whole life. I’ve been listening and I know exactly what women want. Framed in a picture standing next to me, Troy may seem like Mr. Perfect, but he’s underestimating the guy on the right.
Spoiler alert: In this story, the underdog is going to win.
All books in the series can be read as a stand-alone.

SO MUCH FUN! Kate has delivered amazing angst…awesome twists and turns, but this book…it was full of laughter and love and heart. I just loved it so much. I finished feeling so happy.
The Guy On The Right has stolen a piece of my heart. Lort knows he’s amazin’! Kate Stewart has done it again! I could feel the characters, feel their emotions. It’s like I was right there in Texas with them. I could see the story playing out in my mind like a movie and I didn’t want it to end. I wasn’t even half way through it and I was trying to make myself read slower. I wanted to savor all of the words.
The Guy On The Right had me laughing so hard, I couldn’t stop snorting and had tears rolling down my face. It’s a good thing I read it propped up in bed, if I would’ve been sitting in my favorite reading chair, I’d have fallen out of it. I’m graceful like that .
In my mind, Laney and Theo’s story will never be forgotten. It’s a story that dreams are made of it. Not just because the underdog won, but because laughter can be the best medicine in life. Especially when you don’t even know you need it.
1. I love this cover.
2. What a great couple!
I had so much fun reading Theo and Laney’s story. Their chemistry and banter made this whole book for me. There were a couple of times I got a wee bit emotional, Theo was just killing me. Omg his sisters! Oh man their shenanigans had me cracking up. Such a great book giving me all the feels and then some. I highly recommend it and it’s going in my reread pile.
If you’re looking for a heart warming, genuinely LOL read this one’s for you!
Theo and Laney’s friends to lovers adventure is my favourite kind of smart storytelling. Hilarious dialogue, heartfelt self discovery and a cast of supporting characters that makes for a rich read. I laughed so hard in parts I woke my husband up.
Kate has a real flair for comedy and I adored how she reminded us the right guy is sometimes the guy on the right. Hottie Band Geeks unite!
The Guy on the Right a very funny stand-alone from Kate Stewart.
This is a fun entertaining read that’s very easy to get lost in, I laughed, I swooned, I giggled and at times I held my breath while losing myself in this great read. Theo and Laney are so opposite but so right for each other, their banter is hilarious and they are just the perfect couple.
Theo is looking for the right girl, he is not into one night stands like his football player roommates, he grew up with 3 older sisters who taught him well. A chance meeting with the feisty strong independent Laney has his head in a spin but he knows she is the one …..
Laney is done with dating but when she meets Theo outside a party she knows straight away she has found a friend, she may not be able to see his face and he may not be her usual type but he intrigues her and that’s when their friendship begins…
A friendship that turns into so much more but Theo and Laney need to tread carefully because neither of them want to ruin the friendship and the connection they share.
A friends to lovers romance with a lot of very funny banter make this a must read for all rom com lovers and I’m sure like me you will fall big time for Theo the man with the beautiful heart, I swooned and I sighed as I found myself captivated in this great read.
Theo+Laney = #friendstoloverscouplesgoals
So , I’m a gal who literally goes from one book to the next. Y’ALL!! I have walked around all damn day and literally picked this book back up repeatedly. Just to go back to parts of it ,and reread them ,because this book IS.THAT.FREAKIN.FANTASTIC! I just didn’t want to accept that it was over. I wanted to hang onto Theo and Laney’s story a little longer before I let them go. So let me try to do this justice without giving anything away, because #SpoilersSuck!!
What can I say? Theo and Laney’s story is friends to lovers PERFECTION! Theo is the guy who is adorably cute(oh no adorable!that’s the no sex kiss of death) Yet so hot in his own way. I can tell you for dang sure, our band guys sure the he’ll didn’t look like that!! Theo, for years has measured himself up against the “Jock standard” or the “ model/abs for days type”. Laney is this gorgeous, Doritos locos taco lovin’ country girl, who has spent way to long dating the wrong guys. Mostly guys those same guys that Theo would think he couldn’t measure up to. When they meet( spectacular meet-cute BTW)they immediately form this hilariously fun friendship. Be prepared for LOL moments, sweet moments, moments hotter than biscuits and gravy! A misunderstanding and conflict that will have you on the edge of your seat. And of course an ending to rival any John Hughes movie- worthy endings!! Let’s not forget some of my most favorite things of all… The Grannism’s, the hashtags, the references to one of the most amazing iconic movies ever, they legit make this book EVERYTHING! Gah! * releases squeals of happiness*
*I voluntarily reviewed an advanced complimentary copy of this book.
My cr8zysockbookblock overall ratings for this book!
-This book was EVERYTHING!! It was sweet, full of fun, sass, they had great fun chemistry from the get go. But it was slow burn not Insta love. I love these main characters so much. The supporting characters were awesome as well. The Ending was Perfection!
– Steamy , but super passionate. Hot band geek sex, yes please. This was like sizzling sweet. Like making love , but down and dirty love!! You can wear some pretty Panties but… they are coming off ladies!
Cliffhanger Warning- There is NO cliffy. HEA for you!!
Theo and Lacey were a fun adorable couple. His friend Troy was an interesting character. I laughed at Theo’s sisters and their antics. This is a great read and I recommend it to anyone that likes slow burn romance with comedy. A definite reread for me.
I received a copy of this book and am leaving a review.
This book is on a league of its own, in the very best way!!!
A must read, as this book became one of my top reads for 2019!!
There are rom coms and then there’s The Guy on The Right.
This author proved once again her genius in creating characters we fall in love with and leave us thinking about them way after we finish reading the story.
Theo and Lainey’s story is a juicy, spicy, heartfelt slow burn opposites attracting story…on steroids!
This book was flawlessly written, the writing was edgy and sharp. The one liners, were hilariously funny and the timing was on point. Even the secondary characters brought additional value to the story.
I’ve always cheered for the underdog but this book had me cheering, howling with laughter and swooning over Theo. He’s not the guy we want to date or read about, that would be his alpha god roommate. No, Theo is the guy we meet at the parties and we like him because he’s a nice guy and has a “nice personality”. However, Theo is on a league of his own, and when he meets Lainey, oh its on!
She’s way out of his league but there’s something about them that makes them click. Their chemistry is full of sexual tension, but there are things that happen that just make their honesty shine through along with a hefty overdose of cackling snort laughter!!
How their story evolved and developed affirmed how we don’t always see people for WHO they are. Brimming with all kinds of heartfelt emotions making you want to go out and enjoy #livingmyrealestlife
Romantic comedy at its finest. Heavy emphasis on the comedy.
DO NOT under any circumstance eat or drink anything while reading this book.
This has been a Public Service Announcement.
I laughed myself into tears throughout this entire story.
Kate Stewart should hold the award for defining what an amazing friends-to-lovers romance trope should look like.
Theo and Laney were adorable, sweet, hilarious, and oh so romantic. I absolutely loved every single one of their shenanigans, especially when it came to a level of fast friendship and inside jokes between these two.
Theo is the definition of the guy in the friend zone, overshadowed by alpha males in his life. He’s band geek description would likely be an instant turn off for some when it comes to romance heroes, yet, Theo quickly becomes your dreamy book boyfriend. He’s more than just the cliché band geek. His relationship with his sisters had me laughing nonstop. He truly is someone who loves with his whole heart and soul and makes you swoon.
Laney is nothing but a lost gypsy soul. Her heart aches for something if only she could figure out what that something is. She’s fierce and outspoken and definitely lacks a brain-to-mouth filter. Everything I love in a romance heroine. She’s honest about who she normally falls for and rather than using Theo she commits to his friendship. Watching her fall in love was awesome.
Let us not forget the true hero of the story #DaveintheWhiteTaurus ! I laughed so hard during this chapter I almost peed myself. No shame in that admission either.
The Guy on the Right is a book you don’t want to miss. So run, don’t walk to buy this one now.
And as always from my reviews, my top quotes from the book:
“She’s a second look kind of girl. The first look at her is for simple appreciation for the stunner she is. The second look is a realization of what an idiot you were for not looking longer the first time around.”
“I’m unsure if I’m worthy of such a gift. The gift of knowing him, of seeing him this way, of being on this side of his affection. I might’ve fallen slowly, but I just landed impossibly deep.”
“We’re polar opposites in some ways. I’m too country and he’s a whole lot of everything else. We shouldn’t fit, but we do, and our fit is nothing short of spectacular.”
So far, I’ve loved everything I’ve ever read by Kate Stewart, but this might be my favorite yet!
I fell in love with this story from page one and I know you will too. Theo is amazing! How can anyone not fall head over heels for him? He’s such an amazing guy. He’s quirky, funny, and not what you’d consider typical ‘book boyfriend’ material, but don’t let that fool you. Theo is swoon-inducing, pantie-melting, and breath-stealing, and what’s crazy is that you’ll never even see it coming. He’s so much more than you give him credit for.
Laney is a ‘hot-mess express.” Her words. And they’re fitting. She’s such a fun, quirky, fantastic character. She answers to no one but herself, her independence being one of her strongest attributes. She flies by the seat of her pants, does what she wants, and makes no apologies for who she is. It’s refreshing.
I love it when these two get together, because you never know how truly crazy things might get. In a lot of ways, Theo and Laney are complete opposites, but I think it’s those differences that balance each other out, and you’re left with a solid friendship foundation to build on. This one is going to tug at your heartstrings big time. You’ll laugh more than you’ll cry with this story, but it’s still going to give you ALL the feels you can handle.
This is another fantastic read from this author!
This is one of the few Rom-Com I ever read and I have to say that I really love it …. it kept me laughing since the very first pages of the book but literally laughing.. I felt in love with Theo and Laney story they really were great characters both of them had their own issues but the laugh and the great vibe never ended in this wonderful story.. I love how their friendship turned into something more.. they took their time to meet each other, making their love story and relationship even better..
Great book and great story it was romantic, light and with all the ingredient to made Theo and Laney two great heroes to enjoy..
I love how versatile Kate can be she can write a very angsty story that will keep us crying and screaming all the way or this amazing light-hearted Rom-Com that will definitely make us smile..
A beautiful story that shows that opposites do attract and the result of that pairing can be amazing and sweet. Theo and Laney shouldn’t work as well together as they do but they fit perfectly! They quickly become the best of friends and while things heat up fairly quickly, it happens in a way that feels more like a slow burn instead of a flash fire. They’re relationship grows in a way that you feel as though you’re part of their story, observing as a friend instead of a stalker/reader . There is absolutely nothing about this book that I did not like!
Kate Stewart does an excellent job of sharing Theo and Laney’s story in a way that will make you smile, make you swoon and frustrate you to no end when the characters just aren’t in the mood to cooperate! Another amazing book from this author and just another reason why she’s an auto-buy author for me!
This was such a fun, sweet and charmin’ read. The Guy to the Right was a slow burn, friends to lovers story and I absolutely loved Laney and Theo together. They first meet in a cloud of darkness and in a Banana Rum haze. Unable to see each other in the dark of night, they are able speak their truths and confess their past indiscretions without feeling judged. When they run into each other in the light of day, they both find themselves curious and drawn to one another and form a fast and beautiful friendship.
What was not to love about Laney?? She was a sweet vivacious walking contradiction. So full of sass and warmth you couldn’t help but fall for her and her potty mouth. Theo always felt like the runner up, but he was a true gentlemen full of heart and kindness willing to let everyone around him shine. Both Laney and Theo were broken, real, honest and opened with one another, not hiding who they were. They were able to truly live their realest lives and free to be themselves. Over months of friendship, they learn about each other’s strengths, weakness’, quirks, pasts, and together they are magic. Their friendship turns into an unbelievable love that has them seeing stars and a future they never felt lucky enough to have.
When old scars and insecurities start surface, Theo loses focus and trust in Laney. Laney is left heartbroken and hoping that Theo is able to see that he was never the runner up or second choice for her. He was and always will be her first choice, her grand prize. Love, love LOVED it!!
Full of witty humor, awkward moments and tear inducing heartbreak – this book was pure perfection – I absolutely loved it. I feel like I have a permanent smile on my face after finishing this book, definitely one of my favorites this year. I’m always rooting for the underdog and a character like Theo Houseman is exactly why I will always fall for them. He is not the big man on campus nor is he the perfect specimen of college athletics muscle, he is a band geek with a heart of gold and a fierce need to protect those that he loves. Yet for Laney Cox – he is everything she never knew she would find attractive, a best friend and confidant when every man in her life had let her down repeatedly. Building an unbreakable friendship bond, these two had me laughing and crying while reading their fantastic love story.
I mean seriously- this right here is what had me swooning so hard for Theo – I swear this fictional man was giving me butterflies – “I lean down and kiss her cheek before slowly pulling away. Her eyes widen before she smiles. “What was that for?” “Existing.” “
5 Stars for me!
I’m going to keep this relatively short because I liked the story it just didn’t wow me. As always with a Kate Stewart book there was awesome humor and banter throughout. The characters were charming and funny. The story is cute, light, and fun. Their connection slowly builds into something really special. It’s not sizzling constantly, more subtle like a subtle thrum but it’s there. There’s some transition spots and some overly detailed/done conversations but overall it’s an enjoyable romantic comedy.
4.5/5 STARS

Kate Stewart is one of my favorite authors
I just love how she writes angsty love stories
But I’m also a huge fan of her romcoms, so it’s no surprise I enjoyed this book too.
I loved the way Theo and Laney met
I loved the way they bounded as friends first.
I loved the way they grew together stronger, deeper… and hotter, until they realized they had fallen for each other.
But I wanted to point out some other aspects too:
Theo’s family: it was hilarious.
The “Grannisms”, of course!
And… Am I the only one who wants Troy and Lance to have their own love stories????
Give them to me Kate!!!!
All in all, drama and romcoms à la Kate Stewart never disappointed me, so yes, grab this book and enjoy it this summer!

Kate Stewart delivered a 2019 top ten read here for me. I am in love with Theo and Laney. It was refreshing to see a couple begin their story as friends. They were sassy, sarcastic, sweet, steamy and oh so lovable. Theo has always been the good guy, the underdog but never the one to get the girl. Laney has an issue with commitment because all the men she has known were not committed to her and the women who raised her. Although these two are opposites, the attraction they share is off the charts. Neither one is willing to admit that they want more. It was fun and addictive to jump into the pages of this delightful story. I would love to read more about the lives of the characters in this story.

There are not enough stars to give this book! It is by far one of my fav books of the year!! K Stewart never disappoints but this story took her to a whole new level in my book. It is witty, emotional, flirty and fun and these characters will embed themselves into your heart and stay there from the beginning.
I have always fallen for “The Guy on the Right” – you know who he is…not the obvious one. But the one who stands out in his own way – with his humor, wit, charm, unique style. You know who I’m talking about. Theo IS that guy and I fell for him hard!! His charm and wit are the first layer of many that will pull you in. He is loyal, mature, respectful, talented and loves to please his woman. Swooon!!!! From the first interaction between him and Laney not only was I taken by him but I was in love with their chemistry – easy banter and sense of comfort they had with each other from the start. They are so real and raw they made me want to experience love again for the first time.
Theo is ever the people-pleaser…he is selfless although guarded after having his heart broken. You can’t help but cheer for him from the first page on. He fights his true feelings towards Laney for an impressive amount of time until he finally allows himself to give in. Laney is a wildflower who dances to the beat of her own drum. And Although she is completely opposite of Theo in many ways – they just click from the beginning and his carefree attitude and easy banter put her at ease with their close friendship. Watching her let down her walls and show her vulnerabilities with him stole my breath at times. She was relatable and I shed tears of joy when their story came full circle.
As their story unfolds you will find yourself wanting to follow their IG page, inspired by Grans advice, and falling for the guy with the band who couldn’t be sexier if he tried. These characters spoke to me on a level that very few do and I can’t wait to see what else may come from #livingourrealestlives. Thank you K Stewart for yet another amazing story!!!
The Guy on the Right is not your standard, typical romance – and that’s what I love about it! It was a true, friends to lovers romance with two of the most quirky and unique characters I’ve ever read about. Theo and Laney were a delight to read about – between the doritos loco tacos, gummies, Dave in the white Taurus, tornados – everything about them was wonderful. Their relationship was quite a refreshing change, and I love how the feelings both just crept upon them. And I totally teared up at the end – seriously, Theo sure knows how to make the ladies swoon!
As for Troy, before I saw that little snippet at the end……I just knew his story wasn’t finished! Looking forward to seeing the other side of him that we didn’t get to see in this one.
