NOW A TOP 40 AMAZON BESTSELLER!Strike One-My mother named me Theodore after her favorite chipmunk. Not cool, Mom.I‘ve spent most of my life answering to Teddy, because I couldn’t make Theo work.Except for here. College. The place where all bets are off, and I’ve managed to redeem myself. There’s only one problem, my new roommate, Troy, is football royalty and looks like he stepped off the set of an … royalty and looks like he stepped off the set of an Abercrombie shoot.
Doesn’t matter, I cook a mean breakfast for his panty parade, and we get along well.
And anyway, this year I got the girl. And she’s perfect.
That’s right. Theodore Houseman, former band geek, now marching band rock star has finally landed the girl of his dreams.
Everything is perfect.
That is, until Troy takes a good look at her.
I’m not going down without a fight. As a matter of fact, I’m not going down at all. As glorious as these days may be for my all-star roommate, Laney is my end game.
I may not know much about play strategy, but I’ve been the good guy my whole life. I’ve been listening and I know exactly what women want. Framed in a picture standing next to me, Troy may seem like Mr. Perfect, but he’s underestimating the guy on the right.
Spoiler alert: In this story, the underdog is going to win.
All books in the series can be read as a stand-alone.

I adore Theo & enjoyed Laney for the most part. This story was SUPER fun & cute (except for the SOB – seemingly obligatory breakup, which I did not jive with) & I’m happy that both Theo’s roommates are getting future stories!
These two have an adorable meet cute, and then an equally adorable second meeting. They just click right away as friends & build that friendship throughout most of the story. They hang out & do all sorts of fun things (& Laney’s crazy antics get them in a spot of trouble a time or two) & really get to know each other (while still feeling a sense of mystery). It was funny & sweet & if only their time apart hadn’t been quite so … whatever it was about it that I didn’t like … this would have been a 5+! Still, I enjoyed it, as I said, and will read the other connected stories when they come out!! : )
This book, oh man it hit me right in the feels. I can honestly say I loved this book hard! It was funny, a little sad and oh so romantic. I’m pretty sure I smiled and laughed through ninety percent of this book.
You will definitely fall for and swoon over Theo. Laney is hilarious and so sweet. You can’t help but fall in love and root for them.
This is the first book in series and I really look forward to reading more. The secondary characters have great and crazy (the good kind) personalities. I also really hope that Theo and Laney will be in them.
Don’t miss out on this 5 star read. It just makes you smile and feel happy.
Thank you Kate Stewart for a copy of this book.

Here’s one of my Favorites!
Grannism- “If he’s paying attention to the right things, you’ll rarely ever have to give directions “
This book was such a refreshing read. I loved it. It had all the feels! I loved their connection, and the building of the relationship between Laney and Theo. I loved their witty banter. Felt all the sexual chemistry and heartaches. Great read!
I’ve probably never laughed out loud while reading a book as much as I did with this one. I loved it. Any book that references my southern roots and Madea can’t go wrong. It’s outrageous and silly but I loved every moment. Can’t wait to see where Troy ends up.
Favorite lines: Theodore Houseman’s Colossal College Mistake #1– losing my virginity to a heat- seeking demon.
“Okay, that’s one word. Here’s another, clitoris, learn how to find it and then worship it, because it may save you some relationship miles.”
“How dare you! Fine. Nope. Nope. Eat shit, Patrick, you’re disgusting. I knew better. Yeah, well, I loved you too until about five minutes ago. Bye.”
“I’m trying not to freak out that I just lost my virginity and may need a rabies shot.”
“You serious?” “As a velociraptor attack,”
Our ancient basset hound, Max, reluctantly follows, but not before giving me a grunt that translates to something like, ‘it’s way past our bedtime, hoochie.’
Even if he is half blind with cataracts and I’m forced to lift his fifty- plus pound ass into my bed each night, he’s dependable.
Teddy: Mom should have drowned you the minute you started screaming at your baptism because it’s proof you’re inherently E V I L.
if I woke up this morning and thought, ‘today is a good day to die.’”
“This is my time to reflect on my bad decisions, Mom. I need to be alone.”
“This house is a prison!” I can’t help my laugh. “Someone has been watching way too much Step Brothers.”
“Of all the sperm, this is the one that made it? This one? Really? I know we’re not supposed to question God, but I might have a few for our good Lord once I get there. And if I go early, I’m taking this kid with me. There’s your free wrap it tight warning for the day. See you, Theo.”
“That close?” “It happened fast. We shared trauma.”
“Please don’t start a fight,” Devin sounds up, her snarl directed at him. “I just got my nails done.”
Nothing like showing your crazy to scare a feisty penis back into its shell.
“I did you a favor. He stunk.”
“I’m pleasant. Damnit! I saw Drum Eatenton this morning at the Piggly Wiggly, and I smiled at the son of a bitch ‘fore I could help myself!”
But she will use me at her leisure, like a stuffed animal. I’ll be there for comfort on long, lonely nights; and she will drag my ass around by the arm until I’m filthy, my limbs are ripping apart at the seams from neglect, and my insides are coming out.
“I was up most of the night, wondering how many times the Lord could be summoned before He made an appearance in the middle of some shameful fornication.”
“I’ve been suckered, no, manipulated into this because I’m a nice guy, so you will get no such thing.”
“So, let’s do this. Go all in. We can make fun of ourselves and help further my education.” “How convenient, for you.”
Grannism—Don’t give anyone the whole map, and only trust a few with directions.
My eyes lift on their own accord, well technically it’s my evil self- sabotaging Va- Gina. Damnit, Gina!
I speak to Gina on my fake call. “This round goes to me, bitch.”
“Hey, a girl’s gotta make a living any way she can, and I’m so broke right now I can’t afford to pay attention.”
“Best hurry up, this heifer keeps a roscoe in her purse!” “What’s a roscoe?” “A gun. Last time she shot at me.”
“I got no warning, and you know you made that shit seem shady just to mess with me because you’re a pint- sized terrorist in boots. And I’ll have you know I like plenty of other manly things that don’t involve live ammunition. I assure you I have a dick.”
And don’t think for one second I won’t toss you in front of me at the first sign of danger, because I’m not that guy. You will die first.”
“Nice to meet you, Max, are you the undertaker when she escorts souls to hell?”
“Where are we, Satan’s lair?”
“Only you would call a felony a whoops.”
Grannism—Don’t go cheap on the toilet paper, just don’t.
“Theo! It’s hotter than Satan’s anus out here! Although I’m not sure the devil himself would buy real estate in Texas.”
“Yeah, I told her mother we should tie her back to the radiator. But she no longer believes in corporal punishment.”
“It’s ancient. When you fill out a form at a motel, do you put vehicle, Type: Dinosaur, Color: Rust?”
Grannism—Work hard but make hard days’ work with whiskey.
“I can have a cross- dressing, gender- bending, hero of color if I want to. And she goes by my moral compass, which is pleasant until pissed.”
“Why? I’ve been so good. I’ve been going to church. I only showed up tipsy that one time.”
“Don’t use the Lort as an excuse for your agenda.”
“Look, boy, the only number you’re about to need is Nine. Onet. Onet. You got dat? I know it’s hard to comprehend.”
“Flattery will get me pregnant. I’m seventy years old. Do you really want that? I’m well past the men- da- pause.”
“Ma to the damn d- e- a. Madearrrr and I don’t date batmens no mo, you heard me?”
“That’s right, it’s Ms. Nope, as in no- pe- nis.”
“Now, run off to ya cave and leave an old woman alone.”
“Take your cave dwelling firm ass on!”
Grannism—They say a kiss is worth a thousand words, I say hand-holdin’ is where it’s at.
Grannism—Everyone should do something bat shit crazy once in a while, it’s good for the soul.
“Swear to the Lort?” “Aww, you Madea’d me. You must really love me.”
“Listen to me, Houseman. We ate too much. We are Snoop Dogg at the Chronic Olympics high. We have an Uber coming in five minutes. I need you to find your feet.”
Grannism—If he’s paying attention to the right things, you’ll rarely ever have to give directions.
Grannism—Don’t smoke, but if you do, make sure the sex is worthy of it.
Grannism— Don’t trust cat people. They want low maintenance relationships.
Grannism—If someone truly cares for you, you won’t ever have to wonder about it.
“Lort,” he says through swollen lips in perfect Madea, and I grin shaking my head. “You’re something else, Houseman.”“You’re everything else.”
“Beautiful, crazy, unusual, perfect…alive.”“All I heard was crazy.”“Of course you did,”
“And I quote, ‘clitoris, learn how to find it and then worship it, because it may save you some relationship miles.’”
Grannism—Don’t go trying to find the pretty in ugly people. That’s like saving your sunshine for shit. Even in better light, it’s still a glowing turd.
“Ouch, Teddy!” I hear from somewhere in the house. “Go straight back to hell, Satan!” Theo shrieks.
My mother sighs and leans over to my dad. “I’ll admit, I dropped that one.”“I knew it,” he replies dryly before they share a smile.
Grannism—Not all men are created equal. Half of them were created due to God’s sense of humor.
“Why did I marry you again?”“Because I’m ridiculous hot, and I put up with your shit.” Devin smiles. “That’ll do for now.”
Grannism—If a man makes you smile, he’s worth it. If he makes you cry, that’s when you know he’s worth a whole lot more to you.
Grannism—You aren’t hungry, you’re bored.
“Always a pleasure, buddy, it’s naptime. Kindly see yourself out.”
And I painted my glasses the perfect shade of rose to discredit any reasons why we shouldn’t be together.
Grannism—Love ‘em enough to let them break your heart but learn enough so they don’t break your spirit.
Grannism—Your grandfather told me once we were moving north, so I pulled out a map and asked him, ‘Where in Texas is that?’
This is the first time I’ve read this author, it was recommended in my book group so I was like ok then. It did not disappoint!! Rollercoaster of emotions from each turn of the page, full of sass, laughter, wisdom and provoked many moments of tears for me ( yep I’m a big sap!) FLOVED it!
Teddy and Laney meet in the shadows of a party, they have a great conversation and a connection that neither is looking for. Teddy was burned by his previous girlfriend, who cheated on him and broke his heart. He lives with 2 jocks that seem to throw away girls with the morning trash. He is dedicated to his music. Laney wants to finish college and not fall for the bad guys anymore. Love these two together. Great read
I’d take The Guy on the Right any day of the week…
I can honestly admit that I nearly gave up on The Guy on the Right. It was NA College at its finest…which unfortunately, left me tut-tutting and shaking my head in all of my old lady glory. These characters got up to crazy shenanigans and acted recklessly as normal college-aged students do. The older I get, the further I am away from the memories of those good old days and that craziness has lost its appeal. But as the story progressed and I got to know the characters better, I came to love what was below the surface.
Theo and Laney have ghost pains and love wounds to compare when they meet for the first time. Neither of them is looking for the love of their lives and are very hesitant to trust the opposite sex. The best part of their relationship is that it started out as friendship. They were able to be open with each other and establish a natural conversation without the pressures of lusty lustiness. Theo was attracted to Laney from the beginning but didn’t want it to be one-sided as she had put him in the friend-zone. With time their connection grew stronger and neither of them could deny the zing between them.
Kate Stewart has treated us to a very funny, sweet, sexy and heartwarming story. The characters came to life for me and I loved getting to know them better and seeing their growth from beginning to end. Like I mentioned above, at first, I thought it was going to be all about the shenanigans but as the story progressed, I loved seeing the deeper side to the characters. When Theo and Laney eventually take their relationship to the next level…IT WAS HOT!!!!!
I laughed, sniffled, sighed and squirmed reading The Guy on the Right and by the end I was questioning if there was even a guy on the left or any other guy for that matter. Theo was a fantastic hero but he wasn’t perfect. He does an absolutely knumbskully thing towards the end and I was absolutely SHOCKED! He should have trusted his heart and he nearly paid the penalty for his silly insecurities. But, that just made him human and he definitely made up for it BIG TIME. Laney was funny and I loved it when she finally acknowledged Theo’s attractiveness. It was almost like if she admitted it, she’d have to give him up. They were perfect together.
If you’re a fan of Kate Stewart you will absolutely LOVE The Guy on the Right. If you’re a fan of NA College, I highly recommend giving this one a go. I’m not normally a fan of this genre, but I had to make an exception for Ms Stewart. I knew she’d get it right, well, I knew after the first 30% (sorry for doubting your abilities Ms Stewart) that she’d have me loving these characters by the end. Theo is the kind of hero every girl should dream of and Laney is the heroine we all wish we could be a little like.
I highly recommend reading The Guy on the Right and I can’t wait for more from this author.
I’ve read so many books by this fantastic, talented author that all have their special place in my heart. This one was no exception! Finally a book about a ‘normal’ guy. Not the stereotype that we all love to read about. This one was a cleansing to my palate. A true romantic guy at heart that always seems to draw the short straw. Have no fear, The Guy on the Right has his turn and what a great job this author did taking us on his journey.
Its a smooth sailing read that I devoured in one day. A great book to sit outside and have a good margarita to sip on and read.
This book was definitely refreshing. Loved all the
belly laughs & the slow burn. One of the best Summer
RomCom Friends-to-Lovers reads.
Kate Stewart did it again! She delivered another outstanding contemporary, sports romance. I devoured this one in one sitting.
Q: “I’m unsure if I’m worthy of such a gift. The gift of knowing him, of seeing him this way, of being on this side of his affection. I might’ve fallen slowly, but I just landed impossibly deep.”
I have mad respect for Kate Stewart’s writing talents and her books have been some of my absolute favorites over the last few years and yet I was still blown away by The Guy on the Right. This story is utterly heartwarming and sweet, hysterically funny at times, and characteristically sexy. Kate went out of her way to write a story that made the common man the hero. He wasn’t what we would typically see in modern romance, yet he’s very real and extremely appealing! Everything about this story felt realistic and believable, and was delivered absolutely BRILLIANTLY! The tender, sweet moments, the friends to lovers dynamics and the real-life romance feel to the story really grabbed my heart and before I knew it my emotions were extremely caught up in Theo and this fictional story that you could truly believe was taking place right before your eyes. Kate’s a very versatile storyteller who crafts extremely entertaining romances and I highly recommend her work on the regular with my blog and to my family/friends and I was calling everyone I knew to tell them about this one.
Q: “If I’m completely honest, I’ve been falling for him, in pieces, since the night we met.”
If you’re looking to laugh out loud, the hilarious situations between Theo and Laney will have you rolling. If you’re looking to swoon, Theo will be right there with his steady, sweet, sexy demeanor that holds much sway and is very believable… he’s the guy you usually friendzone, and who I am proud to actually say I didn’t… I married mine! But Theo and Laney also give off heat and sizzle and the story is sexy in a way I’ve come to expect from Kate’s work. What I am really saying is that The Guy on The Right offers you a little bit of everything and makes for the perfect read tonight or any night and is not to be missed! Absolutely 5 Stars!
Read and Reviewed an ARC of The Guy on the Right VOLUNTARILY on behalf of Spellbound Stories book blog
Theo & Laney
Where do I start with these two!!! I fell in love with Theo the underdog who is overly protective of his heart until he meets the beautiful hysterical Laney. She’s a spitfire and will have you laughing from day 1. Her personality is so bright it comes right through.
I enjoyed this book very much and my only disappointment even though it’s a slow burn the ending was too quick for me. I was expecting more for Theo & Laney and the epilogue just was not enough. It leaves you wanting a book 2 of Theo & Laney!
This book proves that the amazing Kate Stewart could write the phone book and make it a great read! While so different than her last book Method, which I loved, this book is a laugh out loud perfect summer read! I rooted for Theo and Lainie from the get go! May the guy on the right win! Highly recommend!
I want to scream and yell for everything that is The Guy on the Right! Fun, flirty, and reminiscent of my college days, this book had everything you could ever want from a dramedy!!!
Every time I read a new release from Stewart, I feel as though I am repeating myself, but she keeps outdoing herself! This book and each of its characters, Laney, Theo and all of the supporting characters makes this book a triumph.
My heart has officially been stolen! Stolen by this incredible book, its unforgettable and uniquely charming characters, and the memorable journey they take with one another.
As Always, Happy Reading!
“5/5 Beaming Brains!” – Lit-Up My Mind
Seriously Kate Stewart has just written the BEST underdog story of all time and now I want my very own Theo! The Guy on the Right is a cute and hilarious friends to lovers romantic comedy that had me rolling on the floor laughing my ass off as I devoured this addictively captivating story. Theo and Laney were a hoot and I couldn’t get enough of these two because even though they were complete opposites, they also seemed to be a PERFECT match. This story had my heart swooning with that slow burn romance kind of feeling that shows us all that sometimes the underdog does finish first, even if it takes a little more time!
Kate Stewart has done it again and I can’t even being to tell you all how freaking amazing every moment of this reading experience was. Theo and Laney’s story is a must read romance that is perfect for your summer reading list!
Kate Stewart is a ‘one-click’ author for me. This one did NOT disappoint at all. I LOVED Theo and I LOVED Laney. I loved their ‘meet cute’, I loved their friendship, I loved them.
The only thing that sorta/kinda was eh for me, was how they went so long without Laney meeting Theo’s roomates/friends. I know it’s how the arc was to work, but still 4+ months, that seems a bit unrealistic to me. I know I know, it’s a book and realism shouldn’t factor in, but I like my books to have realism in them. Sue Me.
This book almost got me kicked out of bed (multiple times) for laughing and waking the Mr. up. But he is used to this and easily falls back to sleep.
The pot gummies had me in tears. So many favorite parts. “Boy Sperm” is my newest favorite nickname. I wish I could use it, but alas I have 2 boys and 2 girls.
Kate Stewart has managed to write, yet again, another amazing story. One so rich in detail you want to be part of it. Thankfully, this time she didn’t need to rip out my heart to deliver it. In this amazing romance the good guy wins the girl. I couldn’t help but get swept up in Theo and Laney’s tale. It is completely unique with an easy humor that keeps you laughing throughout. EVERYONE needs to reed The Guy On The Right!!!

The Guy on the Right is friends to lovers, romantic comedy, NA contemporary romance. It is my first ever read from this author and I don’t think I’m gonna stop right there. I read somewhere that she writes angsty romances and this book is her break from her usual type of writing. Nevertheless, this book right here is just freaking gold!
The Guy on the Right is probably one of my top rom-com of this year. I have never had this kind of giddy happiness, fun read in such a long time. This book just hit you with its reality of being friend-zoned happens to anyone and everyone. I was one too, not so long ago and I felt what Theo was feeling. It really sucks being categorized and stuck in that situation. It’s much more so when you’re a girl. Anyway, Theo. Gawd! I love this guy! All throughout the book, I just had this insane feeling to jump right in the story and give him the biggest hug and all my love, because he is SO REAL! I love that he doesn’t act all douche kind or a complete fake tough macho man; he is just your sensitive, funny, smart, considerate kind of guy. Someone dependable and I could go on and on, but at the end, you will end up loving him.
I was smiling, laughing and I think I was left with a permanent happy grin on my face because this book is a solid, true romantic comedy that has a lot of heart. I highly recommend it to those who love rom-com. You NEED to read this! Right now! I loved it!
I absolutely love an underdog love story and one that makes me laugh out loud is the icing on the cake! This book has numerous laugh out loud moments, moments that make you swoon, and moments that bring tears of frustration and tears of happiness. This book reads smoothly and plays in your mind like a movie. Loved it and can’t wait for Troy’s book!
