College. The place where all bets are off, and I’ve managed to redeem myself. There’s only one problem, my new roommate, Troy, is football royalty and looks like he stepped off the set of an … royalty and looks like he stepped off the set of an Abercrombie shoot.
Doesn’t matter, I cook a mean breakfast for his panty parade, and we get along well.
And anyway, this year I got the girl. And she’s perfect.
That’s right. Theodore Houseman, former band geek, now marching band rock star has finally landed the girl of his dreams.
Everything is perfect.
That is, until Troy takes a good look at her.

REVIEW: 4.5 RIDICULOUSLY FUNNY STARS
“I might’ve fallen slowly, but I just landed impossibly deep.”
HILARIOUS PERFECTION!!
First things first: when the honesty and depth of a love refuses to let you give up on its perfection, that is a telling sign. The beginning, middle, and happily ever after that Theo and Laney had was seriously so down to earth, and totally in line with “the underdog” story that Kate Stewart was trying to tell. Flawlessly, I might add. It was heartfelt comedy with some honest emotion, a lot of sass and hilarity, with a love story worthy of a smile. This story was definitely well told.
For someone who doesn’t really enjoy RomComs, this book was a massively hilarious WIN for me!! I can’t handle the overly dramatic, super pushy, terribly forced melodrama that’s awkwardly placed to garner laughs in between the real story at hand in many of the RomComs I’ve come across, so I’ve ultimately pulled away from them. The heroine is obnoxious or annoying, and that’s not how I want “quirky” portrayed. This one had NONE of the sorts. Absolutely perfectly timed hilarity at every corner. So freakin’ funny! But not only was it funny, I’d be remiss if I failed to mention the sweetness and truth to their relationship. This wasn’t sticky sweet….nothing like that. It was more like the truth about real men out there. Not an alpha, but definitely not a bowl-over. Theo was an everyday guy, but his heart sets him apart from the rest. So many minute things, so many small actions that made up the big picture, all of which Stewart mastered. From the hashtags to the Grannisms, the attention to detail was smile inducing fun.
I seriously smiled throughout the entire book. No lie. The banter between Theo and Laney was a very well cultivated atmosphere. It was clearly funny, but there was a comfort that was shared between the two of them that gave an air of ease. The way they met was the most perfect catalyst for this entire storyline and like any good comedian, things come back around full circle. Side-splitting laughter ensues from the first chapter on. Was some of it cheesy? In the entire scheme of things, I don’t particularly think so but some may construe it as such because of the sweetness factor at some points. But it just made me smile from ear to ear.
“She only lives in the present with the pretense of later.”
It was interesting to see how something so….platonic could morph into something so perfect. Now I know that my husband is my best friend and we like to hang out and do things with each other, but that’s also how we started out as well. So not only was I able to put myself in Laney’s shoes, but finding it so relatable in word form was just the icing on the cake. She was funny. She lived for herself and no one’s boundaries and had a good head on her shoulders.
–> I am putting this out into the universe, but any of the side characters in this book could have their own stories and I will be the first in line to sign up to read them. #LivingMyBestBloggerLife
Maybe I love Kate. Maybe I love her storytelling abilities. Her delivery works for me. This one just worked for me in every possible way. Theo and Laney have a story that you can comfortably share with any reader, no matter their preferences. This one, gosh, it made me smile. It really did. The reality, the comedy, the TRUTH to it all. It was perfection. I highly, highly recommend this one!!

B.E.A.U.T.I.F.U.L. & S.P.E.C.T.A.C.U.L.A.R., fairy tale story of an underdog and a nice boy who DOES finish first. He DOES get the princess. The Princess rescues him actually and kicks his Ass while doing so.
This story is like a softly played tune, a gentle summer breeze, a subtle scent of citrus and mint.
They don’t overrun your senses but creep slowly and surely till you forget what life was before you experienced this magic.
“Years from now, when we tell our story, I know my version. It will be about a young girl who went from hopeful to a hopeless romantic in a few notes that only her Prince Charming could play. He didn’t show up on a white horse declaring that she hops on before he gallops away. No, this prince got off his horse, fell on his ass, and stumbled in the mud with her until she could mount her own stallion. And then, in one last act of bravery, he gently trotted beside her into the unknown.”
NEVER HAVE I EVER read a story like this…
Never have I ever been this bowled over by Kate’s immense talent…
Never have I ever been MORE in love with her beautiful soul, than I have been after I closed this book..
Gentle romance with a real hero- Theodore “Teddy” who doesn’t wear a cape. He gets swallowed in the shadows of hunky chiseled Alphas he stands next to, until a Gypsy Heart wanders over in her Rust colored Dinosaur and rescues this adorable boy from the Ghost Pains.
I’m not telling y’all a single thing no more, you need to go in blind and fall in love with a big THUD. Like on-yo-ass with no-falling-out kinda love with this amaze balls story yo’self!
It’s a guide to look beyond the superficiality of buff good bods and peek in the beautiful heart within instead.
“I’m unsure if I’m worthy of such a gift. The gift of knowing him, of seeing him this way, of being on this side of his affection. I might’ve fallen slowly, but I just landed impossibly deep.”
Real, feel good story about living the Realistic Life and not what people project on instatories (I loved the hashtags.)
It’s full of REAL emotions, REAL insecurities and REAL feelings of simple average people who don’t have ripped linebacker bodies but have MABS-maybe abs. Who don’t throw OTT grand gestures of love but silently hold your hair when you puke and are there for you when your heart breaks…in other words which you generally Friendzoned or “Teddy’d”
“My gypsy heart no longer beats that beatnik way. It now thrums in a happy and monogamous rhythm, spelling out his name every four beats. Theo’s carefully carved his place in my life and over my heart. It’s etched all over me.”
I’m so hungover, so enamored, I’m still lying in those pages.
My only problem- I wanted it to go on and on.. Hilarious situations are scattered throughout between Theo and Laney, Theo and his demented Trio of sisters, Theo and his Housemates, it’s just heartfelt and sweet and cute and makes you shed tears and tickles you, you uproariously laugh and grin wide throughout the book
P.S I married the Guy on The Right and got my Happily Ever After

6 stars for men who worship clitoris
Kate Stewart…girl you knocked this book waayyyy out of the park girlie!!! I laughed and laughed while reading and I lost sleep over this book!!! I was up late reading and got up early this morning to finish…I knew the underdog was going to win…but reading how it all came about was fan-damn-tastic!!!!
“Strike One-My mother named me Theodore after her favorite chipmunk.
Not cool, Mom.
I‘ve spent most of my life answering to Teddy, because I couldn’t make Theo work.”
Poor Teddy, but get ready to laugh your ass off cuz he is The Guy on the Right, he is a good guy, you will sooo fall in love with him and his…ummm…nerdiness, goofiness and he is definitely going to be your next book boyfriend!!!!
Definitely a fun loving, sit by the pool and giggle your ass off summer read!!
Theo is without a doubt one of the most swoony men around. He may have mabs, he may be a band geek, and he may not be a pretty boy but Theo is a 1000% better than the hype.
The Guy on the Right is going to have to laughing so hard you snort, sighing so hard your neighbors will question your woes, and have you hiding in the tub waiting for your very own hero. Theo is exceptional. He is a true Romeo/Prince Charming/dream come true.
The Guy on the Right is everything your friends said and more. Theo is easy to love. It’s pure joy to unravel all there is to this complicated guy. It’s easy to see what Laney sees and even easier to acknowledge your own feelings for The Guy on the Right.
Between Grannisms and Laney’s crazy, it’s easy to find something entertaining even without gummies. Although…Dave is a very important part of this story…just saying!
I freaking loved this book. I look forward to everything to come. I loved Lance’s partial story in Team Player 2 and can’t wait for the full tale. I am crawling out of my skin for the 411 in Troy. Talk about bomb drops. Oh, and Kevin….I still think he can suck a bag of d!cks… until Kate Stewart proves otherwise.
I finished this book around 5 this morning and I only got an hour and a half of sleep because I could put this book down!! Kate Stewart’s writing has always hooked me but this “underdog” story was absolutely UNPUTDOWNABLE!
I was rooting for these two after their first meeting and then I kept rooting for them the entire book, even when things got bad. You couldn’t help but feel for these two. They were perfect for each other. When things got dicey, your heart pounded for Lainey and for Theo. When they had their face off I had tears in my eyes because you could feel Stewart’s words on the pages. But love is a beast and works it’s magic so these two get their happily ever after.
Highly recommended.
In true Kate Stewart style, ‘The Guy on the Right’ was a light and fun romance but also full of heart, hope, and just so much more!
Theo and Laney’s characters couldn’t have been more different, and that’s one of the many things that made them tick. I loved their playful banter, and as their friendship blossomed and slowly burned and simmered into a full-blown passion, it felt so genuine and honest to see them free-falling into love.
The writing and the story were fantastic! Kate Stewart always blows me away with her creativity and the way she wraps me up in all the feels gets me every time. I couldn’t put this down, and although it isn’t a sad story, I even had a few tears because the ending was so touching and sweet. Did I mention the passion? Boy, can Kate Stewart build up the passion in her romances!
I loved the secondary characters with Theo and Laney’s friends and family and their fun, loving, and more than honest support. Even Troy’s character got to me, and I’m so excited to hear his story next as well!
With the ‘Grannisms’, hashtags from Theo and Laney’s Instagram account, music, and absolutely swoon-worthy moments, ‘The Guy on the Right’ completely stole my heart and clearly isn’t going to let it go anytime soon. I thoroughly enjoyed this fun and dreamy romance and highly recommend it!
AHHHH!! Kate Stewart delivered the perfect summer read with The Guy on the Right. From page one, I was grinning like a fool. Even when things got a bit dicey, because lets be honest, it’s YA- it was bound to happen, I was still wildly entertained.
I loved the dynamic between Theo and Laney. How they met. How awkward they both were. How nerdy. But most importantly, how they were always just themselves with each other. Although they were opposites in almost every way, their bond was instant and strong.
It was an achingly sweet slow burn. Even when these best friends started to develop feeling for the other, they didn’t want to risk what they already had. But when they finally, and I mean finally gave into what their hearts- and bodies- had been denying it was electric. And so worth the wait.
But old habits and fears die hard and when Theo’s stare him right in the face, he’s left hurt and heartbroken. In the heat of the moment, he did the only thing he could, try to protect his already battered heart. And when he realized the error of his ways, let’s just say he made up for it in the most epic of ways.
Crazy Laney and Bugle Boy came out of nowhere and delivered a one-two punch of humor and heart. Full Doritos and family and music and odd jobs, The Guy on the Right was an absolute joy to read. I am so looking forward to seeing this crew of characters again soon!
LOVED IT!
In a sea of bullies, bad boys, and a**hole romances, Kate Stewart gives us a slightly nerdy, almost always overlooked band geek named Theo. Theo is the nice guy, the underdog, the guy who makes breakfast for his football star roomie’s one night stands, the guy who gave his everything to his girlfriend of 2+ years only to have her crush him by cheating on him.
When Theo overhears a drunken breakup at a party he can’t help be drawn in by the one doing the breaking up…Laney. She’s feisty and very Texas (accent) and she’s been let down over and over again by the good looking jerks she’s constantly finding herself drawn to. This begins an unlikely friendship between two people who couldn’t be more different, deciding to let it all go, just be themselves, be honest, and live their best lives.
This is one of the BEST friends to lovers romances I have ever read. It’s so seamless, the transition, and I was swept away on this ride just like Theo and Laney.
I have to admit, there were some phrases I wasn’t familiar with that I had to look up…like Madea speak, I have never watched a Madea movie in my life, but I found Laney’s obsession with it endearing. The whole “ghosting the whip” part I was lost, LOL, maybe I’m too old or too midwest but I had to look that up and still am not sure I know what it is. BUT, the story totally wiped away anything that was lost in Texas translation for me 🙂
And as much as I smiled and laughed along with Theo and Laney, Kate totally caught me with tears in the last part because I knew she couldn’t not throw in some angst somewhere along the way and boy, did she get it in there good because my feelings were all wrapped up in these two. LOVED it, highly recommend!

5 ‘#livingourrealestlife’ Stars!
ARC provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.
I am sure this is not the first (or last) time I say this but Kate Stewart continues surprising me. This woman can write anything and do it amazingly well! Of course, I already knew she could write comedy (her Balls in Play series is one of my all-time-favorites) but she always comes with unique ideas and refreshing characters. The Guy on the Right is another fabulous example of how talented Kate is.
So, The Guy on the Right is Kate’s newest standalone romcom (already LIVE!) and it’s the story of how the underdog finally wins the love of the one he falls for. Theodore Houseman has always been the unseen good guy behind his sexy roommates, especially Troy. Well, then this swoony nerd meets Laney Cox, a feisty young woman, and she changes his life forever. They start an amazing friendship that cannot be stopped from becoming so much more. And Theo is decided not to lose his girl to anyone, especially not to his hot athlete roommate.
I’ve most definitely been friend-zoned, or in my case, Teddy’d.
WOW! Of course, The Guy on the Right was simply out of this world! I always have the highest expectations when it comes to Kate Stewart and she definitely did not fail with this one. This novel is an outstanding new adult romance with lots of comedy, originality, a whole lot of chemistry and all the feels. Both Theo and Laney are exotic and exceptional characters that killed me with their banter, hilarious comments and chemistry. They are so funny together, I almost freaking cried of laughter! These two polar opposites complete each other 100%.
No matter how hard I’ve tried to stop it, I’ve fallen under her spell. She makes me want, and often.
She’s entirely too much woman to ignore.
I might’ve fallen slowly, but I just landed impossibly deep.
And you know what’s even better? When the sexual tension and the feelings start to show. Actually Theo felt much more for Laney from their very first meeting and when their friendship finally goes to the next level, MY GOD! These two are freaking explosive and just perfect together. Theo and Laney are probably one of my favorite couples Kate has created and you’ll see why if you read The Guy on the Right. And, as always, the woman knows how to wrap up a love story fantastically well. Gah, I am so happy after finishing this book!
My gypsy heart no longer beats that beatnik way. It now thrums in a happy and monogamous rhythm, spelling out his name every four beats.
Therefore, I am rating The Guy on the Right with 5 STARS because it made me fall in love all over again with Kate Stewart’s funny and lighter side all over again. This love story was to die for, it had everything I enjoy in a romantic comedy and so much more. I freaking adored Theo (can I have him, pleaseeeee?) and Laney was simply kick-ass! These two together simply melted my insides. Kate never disappoints me and you still haven’t checked her works, what are you waiting for? Of course, I highly recommend reading this one!
This book is just… WOW!! I am almost speechless! It was an absolute pleasure to absorb! And that is exactly what I did… EVERY SINGLE WORD!
Have to say this is one of the best summers reads for 2019, it’s humorous, sometimes laugh out loud funny, a sincere love story about two young people with trust issues. Steel Magnolias has nothing on Theodore Houseman, (Teddy) or Theo as his college roommates call him. The youngest of four with three older sisters, oh man! The details, the love story that will stay with you for years to come. There are some great quotes and one-liners not to mention the hashtags.
Elaine Renee Cox (Laney) is a jack of all trades master at some, a barista, florist, and repo finder to name a few. She is missing her Grandmother who helped raise her from infancy with her single mother. The Grannyisms are fantastic and hilarious. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did!

This is a slow burn, swoon fest with a girl who’s totally country and a former band geek. He’s recovering from a drunken mistake and she’s decided she’s done with selfish, pretty boys. Life is all about timing. Their time is NOW!
Laney is beautiful and independent. She’s a hard-working go-getter full of the most frustrating yet endearing quirks. She’s is unpredictable and tons of fun. She’s on a break from the eye candy because all they bring is heartbreak.
Theo is a rare find. He’s the guy that wants it all. One night with some random, that just won’t work for him. Theo is giving and he’s willing to give the right girl his all. Any girl that catches him will reap the benefit for his penchant for being a dedicated overachiever.
An unlikely meet up that leads to a connection neither expected. It was supposed to be an anonymous purging of their regrets, but fate had another plan.
They were friends who became inseparable. It didn’t start out as instant attraction, but it developed slowly over time. It was crazy hot sexual tension. It’s culmination was just WOW!!! Their chemistry was just MORE. Theo has all the words to win any girl’s heart. Lucky for Laney, hers is the only one he wants.
I absolutely adored these characters. I totally laughed and smiled as I read. I loved the banter because it was witty and fun. They could both give and take and it awesome. I want more of the side characters and I hope that we’ll get their story’s too. Friends make the best lovers. Get ready to let Theo win you over with his many talents.
This book was so freaking cute!!!
Theo and Laney were so adorable together as they went from friends to maybe more to definitely more!
Ahhh!! I just loved them!! And I loved Laney’s mom and her best friend! Such a fun group of characters!
Over all this friends to lovers book was so much fun to read! The connection between Theo and Laney was sizzling, I loved their humorous banter from start to finish. Opposites do attract, and it was fun following their journey! Kate Stewart’s sense of humor shines through making this the beginning of a great series!! I can’t wait for more!!
What started as a unique meet-cute turned into a very sweet and quirky relationship that will have you rooting for the underdog, for sure. My first by Kate Stewart and I look forward to reading the rest of the series.
I struggle with this one. While I love the premise – the underdog gets the girl – that wasn’t really the story. Another one where I felt that the blurb was really misleading. The blurb gives a very distinct love triangle scenario and that just wasn’t the case. The roommate does come in to play but not like the blurb leads you to believe at all. But I did enjoy the underdog aspect of the story. That Theo wasn’t mister popular big man on campus. It was a different story than I have seen before. I also thought that it was pretty funny, there were a lot of laugh out loud moments in this book that I truly needed and appreciated. But at the same time there were too many tone deaf and insensitive jokes that rubbed me the wrong way and really bummed me out on this book/author.
3.5
Well written I’m not usually a fan of college romance but this was well done and funny. I laughed out loud a few times.
Good characters and good idea. I will read more of Kate Stewart.
Theo’s your typical college marching band geek, at least that’s what you’re led to believe. He’s had one girlfriend who ended up cheating on him, and he’s a loner. But there’s so much more to him. He’s a musical prodigy who has taught himself how to play a host of instruments and creates music for jingles while constantly tinkering with music and instruments in the basement of the house he’s rented while attending college. He’s had to take in roommates, but who would’ve thought that his roommates would be polar opposites? But that’s what college is all about, stepping outside your comfort zone and living life. His roommates happen to be the two best football players on Texas Grand University’s team and looks like they’ll be heading to the NFL after they graduate this year. When Troy and his buddies find out that Theo’s still got his v-card, they set out to help him get rid of it, stat. When Theo wakes up after, he’s got no memory of it, but the scars on his body will be around for a long time.
As he’s sitting outside, contemplating what actually happened, he hears it, the unmistakable sounds of someone throwing up (college party after all). After helping the co-ed by holding back her hair, they decide to continue drinking. They share a bottle of Banana Rum Laney grabs from inside the house while talking on the steps outside. Neither knows what the other looks like because it’s dark out, and they’re ok with that. After exchanging partial names, they two part, only for Theo to recognize her distinctive voice later and the pair actually meet.
Theo and Laney are such opposites as well. You don’t think they’d work, but they really do. I love the dialogue between the two, it’s sometimes so funny that I would snort-laugh and get weird looks from my family and pets (judgemental buttheads all).
You’re led along this winding, funny, and heartbreaking road until the very end, waiting for their Happy Ever After, and when it happens, you heart fills with happiness. At least mine did.
I really enjoyed this story and can’t wait to read the Troy’s story in The Guy on the Left. If you’re a fan of witty, snarky conversations, wonderful characters, NA romance, and Happy Ever Afters, I think you’ll enjoy this story also.
Yes, there is a joke that makes does make fun of children with disabilities. Not gonna lie, it wasn’t funny or appropriate. Then we’ve got the two main characters passing each other that bottle of rum even though Laney’s just thrown up, ewwww. Finally, we have the taking of Theo’s v-card. He can’t remember how it happened, so it can read that he was taken advantage of. If Theo had been a woman, we’d all be up in arms and boycotting this book. That’s the reason for only giving the book three stars. I really wanted to give the book five, but just couldn’t based on those three things.

*5 Stars*
I have heard a lot about this series, so was excited to finally give it a go for myself. I really enjoyed this book. Theo and Laney have an awesome friendship and connection, and I was not so patiently waiting for them to realise it could be more. The adventures and shenanigans they had were lots of fun, and these two were just really enjoyable to read about.
I did think that the issue towards the end was a bit overdone. Or maybe I should say an over reaction. That’s probably a more fitting way to explain how I felt about it. There are some great secondary characters in this one too. And a really great set up for the next book, which I totally did not see coming at all.
I’m keen to continue this series and discover what else happens in this world. Would recommend.
Absolutely loved this story! Had to listen to “Hero” by Foo Fighters after I read it.
